Reese suddenly felt a chill on her neck.

Beside her, Jonathan screamed and fell straight to the ground.

The crowd around them froze for a moment before breaking into panicked screams. The same people who’d been yelling insults at her just seconds ago all stumbled back several steps.

Especially that middleaged woman who’d been the loudestshe dropped to the floor, her pants wet with fear.

Caroline stood there, holding a fruit knife. A thick lock of shiny black hair drifted through the air and landed on the floor.

Reese, who’d just lost that hair, finally realized what happened. She screamed, clutching her head. My hair! My hair!

Caroline let out a cold laugh. That’s all the courage you’ve got?

In her past life, Reese had been even bolder than this.

Caroline still remembered. When she was starving and too weak to move, Reese sat there with her legs crossed, gnawing on a drumstick.

Then, after chewing the meat clean off the bone, she’d tossed it at Caroline’s feet and given her a harsh kick. Come on, Caroline. For the sake of us as best friends, bark like a dog for me. Lick my foot. Maybe I’ll let you have a bite.

Now, in this life, Caroline had a fruit knife in her hand. She took another step and pressed Reese back against the wall.

The knife twirled once in her hand before she set the cold blade against Reese’s neck. Reese, she said quietly, for old timessake, I’ll let you off this once. Next time, I’ll take your head instead of your hair.

The middleaged woman who’d peed herself shouted, scrambling to her feet.

She pointed at Caroline and shrieked. Help! Murderer! Somebody call the cops!

Caroline shot her a look sharp enough to cut. Her eyes carried the same murderous glare that they did when she cut down mutated monsters. Go ahead,” she said calmly. Swim through that flood. Go report me to the police. I’ll be right here waiting.

That one line silenced everyone.

Only then did they remember. There was no electricity, no internet, and no way to leave the building. How could anyone call the cops now?

Pfft!

Right then, Caroline heard an awkward soundfollowed by a foul stench spreading through the air.

She turned toward the smell and froze for a second. Reese had literally scared herself into an accident.

Reese realized it too. Her face turned pale as she pressed her legs tightly together, one hand covering her backside.

But it was too late. The stench had already filled the hallway.

Serves you right,Caroline spat, glaring at her in disgust.

Then she turned her cold, sharp eyes toward the onlookersthose who had just been cheering and mocking her. One icy glance after another swept across the crowd.

Instantly, everyone looked away. No one dared to meet her gaze, let alone whisper another insult.

Without another word, Caroline walked back to her apartment. She shut the door and locked it firmly, sealing all the noise and smell outside.

She didn’t even bother looking at Reese’s hateful, humiliated face again.

Caroline could’ve ended Reese with one slash just now, but that would’ve been too easy for her.

No. Reese deserved to suffer for a long time in the apocalypse.

She wanted that cheating pair to taste what it meant to be powerless. She would trick them into thinking they had crushed her, only to find themselves cowering in fear later. She wanted them to fall apart, to live in terror, and to finally die with regret.

That was the only way to make up for the humiliation and torment she had suffered in her past life.

The thought almost made her laugh. When she returned home, she realized the water had stopped running.

Perfect. Let’s see how Reese washed her filthy backside and clothes now.

Caroline was still grinning when someone knocked on her door.

Ms. Sinclair, came a deep voice from the hallway, calm but firm. Can we talk?.

She’d expected Tyler to show up eventually, but not this soon.

When she opened the door, he stood there holding two plates. One had golden fried chicken smothered in melted cheese.

The other was piled with fancy pastries. The buttery smell of the desserts and the rich aroma of cheese filled the air.

It was obvious. Tyler had picked these carefully. The kind of food any woman would crave.

In a world where most people were starving, this was luxurytoptier stuff.

And it showed how sincere he was.
