Jonathan couldn’t believe his eyes. It had only been a few days, but Caroline’s skin looked radiant, her features more refined, and her whole presence seemed calm and elegant. She looked like a different person. It made him want to pull her into his arms right there.
“Jonathan!” Reese wasn’t happy about that look in his eyes. She quickly squeezed out a few tears and cried, “Jonathan, can’t you tell? Caroline isn’t the same anymore! She’s been hooking up with your uncle–the black sheep of your family! S–she’s doing this to get revenge on you!”
That last line hit Jonathan hard. He froze.
Ivor chuckled twice and said, “Relax. Work with me. I’ll make sure you’re rewarded with more supplies than you ever imagined.”
Meanwhile, Caroline was at Tyler’s place with Raven trotting beside her. The apartment was spotless, everything neatly arranged.
It had the same layout as hers but looked a lot more spacious.
From the living room, she could see some gym equipment Tyler had moved inside earlier.
There were also a few tables and chairs, but none of his stored supplies were visible.
Caroline didn’t ask. Everyone kept their stash secret these days.
To show goodwill, she brought over a chicken.
But to her surprise, Tyler had already prepared two plates of delicious food–and now he brought out trays of crawfish, mussels, smoked sausage, fresh vegetables, and a jar of Cajun spice mix.
They were having a Cajun boil!
Caroline was honestly shocked. Tyler didn’t seem guarded against her. His attitude was open and sincere.
“Ms. Sinclair,” Tyler said, pointing at the pot, “Cajun boil means we cook everything in one pot. So, no worries–no one can poison anyone here.”
Caroline wasted no time. She handed him the chicken.
Tyler nodded and took it into the kitchen.
She soon heard the sound of a fridge door shut.
That made her eyes widen in shock. Tyler had a working refrigerator!
Which meant he had a generator!
When the fire got going, Tyler mixed two dipping sauces. One was bright red, clearly loaded with chili and cayenne pepper–spicy and fiery just by the look of it.
The other was thick with butter and Cajun seasoning, topped with minced garlic, lemon juice, and parsley, giving off that rich
aroma.

He set the milder sauce in front of Caroline, then handed her two small plates. One with melted butter and minced garlic, the other with lemon wedges and Cajun seasoning. “Add whatever you like,” he said.
For a moment, Caroline sat there stunned. Was this really the end of the world? Or Did Tyler have a secret storage space like mine?
At first, they ate quietly, a little awkward.
But eventually, Caroline broke the silence. “You grew up overseas, didn’t you?” she asked, glancing at him. “So how come your record says you served in the army here?”
Tyler looked up at her, clearly surprised she’d start with that question.
He started telling Caroline a bit about his past.
It turned out that all those stories about the Lowlands‘ illegitimate son and the homewrecker and her child being sent abroad were nothing but lies for the public.
The truth was, Tyler’s mother had been an heiress from a powerful family. She made one terrible mistake–falling for Desmond, a man more than 20 years older than her.
Eventually, she returned to her family and gave birth to Tyler.
Tyler joined the army as a teenager. After serving for several years, he spent most of his life overseas.
He didn’t explain what happened in between, and Caroline didn’t ask.
She’d never been one for gossip anyway.
All she needed to know was that Tyler wasn’t close with his family and he seemed to despise the way they did things. That alone was enough for her.
His last name came from his mother’s family, not from his father.
Caroline nodded after listening. “You already know my story. Jonathan and I have nothing to do with each other anymore.”
‘I hope we can trust each other from now on,” Tyler said, reaching out his hand.
Caroline hesitated for a second, then took it.
Dinner that night turned out better than she expected.
Neither of them talked much. After a full day of hard labor, they both dug in without hesitation.
