Kay’s wounds looked fierce. Medicine helped, but they still looked raw. Half her face was pretty. The other half looked like a monster.

Caroline did not say more. She patted Kay’s shoulder.

She had spring water that could heal Kay instantly. But she did not use it.

One reason was she did not want to reveal she had a miracle cure. The other reason was that she wanted to watch Kay’s nature.

There were many people who repay kindness with hate in her past life. She was not going to be a fool and invite trouble.

But trouble still came.

The noise downstairs quieted after about an hour.

While Caroline was upstairs looking out at the view, she saw the man’s body being tossed down from above.

The rain swept over it, and in an instant the corpse was gone without a trace.

Today the acid rain was milder than usual.

If Caroline was right, the rain would be nearly over.

She could hear people all around celebrating, voices lifted with hope. Maybe, just maybe, this disaster was finally coming to an end.

Caroline and Raven were playing when loud knocking hit the door.

The sound was rude and angry.

Caroline raised an eyebrow. Someone was making a fuss again after yesterday’s warning.

She grabbed a big machete and took Raven. She stepped outside.

Tyler and Kay were already out too. The noise had woken them.

The group walked to the stairwell.

At first, Caroline thought it was Ivor’s gang causing trouble again. But when she looked closer, it turned out to be the older woman she had seen before.

The woman wore a bright floral jacket and had a little boy of about five or six with her.

The child was kicking at the door again and again. That explained why the noise had been so loud.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Caroline stormed forward, her voice fierce.

The boy was a brat, and it showed. When Caroline snapped at him, he froze for a second, then glanced at the old woman beside him. Her encouraging look gave him courage, and he kicked at the door even harder.

Caroline couldn’t help laughing. She gave Raven a pat on the shoulder.

After last night’s soak in the spring water mixed with acid rain, he had grown even bigger.

In a flash, Raven lunged forward. Through the bars of the security gate, he barked furiously.

All the boy saw was a gaping set of jaws snapping toward his leg, followed by the deafening roar of barks.

Terrified, he stumbled back and landed hard on his backside, bursting into loud sobs. “Grandma! Grandma!”

The old woman jumped in fright herself. Clutching her chest, she quickly bent down to scoop the boy up off the ground.

She pointed at Caroline and shouted, “You, you bully old people and kids! The acid rain is almost over. Rescue teams will come soon. I will call the police. I’ll tell them you stabbed someone, caused trouble, and took the common space!”

Caroline suddenly understood why the old woman had dared to bring a child up to the 66h floor to make a scene.

The rain had eased, and they thought rescue was on the way–that all of this was about to be

over.

She laughed inwardly but kept her face calm. Tugging Raven back from the door, she said coolly, “Oh? Then I should be scared. After all, if the police arrest me, the rest of my life could be ruined. I’d end up in prison, don’t you think?”
