“Give us everything you have, or I’ll let my grandma beat you to death!” the boy shouted, his face full of anger.

He sounded unreasonable, clearly spoiled and pushed the wrong way by the old woman.

Caroline shot a glance at Tyler and Kay, then opened the stairwell door. “Ma’am, your idea sounds good. I’m young. I don’t want trouble. Come on in. Take whatever you want.”

The old woman hesitated, eyeing Raven warily. “Don’t you dare play tricks on me.”

“Raven, go to Tyler’s place,” Caroline ordered.

Tyler raised a brow but led Raven away. He didn’t understand her plan, but he didn’t ask.

The old woman held her grandson and stepped into Caroline’s entryway.

The smell of braised short ribs lingered in the air. The boy squirmed and shouted, “Meat! I smell meat! I want some!”

The old woman’s eyes lit up. “Meat for me too. Give us all your meat,” she demanded.

Caroline smirked coldly and shut the door. “Didn’t you want to talk law? Let me spell it out. You’re in my home. That makes this breaking and entering. And if I want to deal with you, I can do whatever I want.”

With that, Caroline kicked the old woman hard in the knee.

A shameless bully, trying to reason with her?

Fine. Caroline would give her a lesson of her own.

The old woman staggered, clutching her grandson, and fled in panic.

By the time she left, she was scared witless.

The boy, still clueless, kept hurling curses at Caroline between sobs.

Caroline pointed her knife at them. “Cry again, and I’ll gut you right here.”

The old woman clamped a hand over the boy’s mouth.

But the brat bit down hard and tore a chunk of flesh from her hand. She screamed and

dragged him away.

After leaving the 66th floor, the old woman collapsed at the stairwell, crying and wailing like her world had ended.

Then someone shouted from below, “Rescue! I see the rescue boats!”

Caroline peered through the stairwell glass and saw two small boats approaching, men in uniforms standing on board.

The old woman snapped upright. She smeared the blood on her face, glared at Caroline, and spat, “You little bitch! I’ll have the police arrest you. You’ll pay for this!”

But by the time she rushed down, the rescue boats were already leaving.

The rescue crews only stopped to count how many people upstairs were still alive and to tell everyone that the government was building a safe base. They told people to wait patiently and said supplies would be sent soon because the acid rain was easing.

Of course, after going so long without seeing anyone from the government, the residents weren’t about to let the boats leave right away. They crowded forward, shouting questions, trying to get answers.

They even grabbed at the young man who came to pass messages, begging for food.

The boats held only four men, and their supplies had already been used up along the way. There was nothing left to hand out here.

In the end, the men on the boats pulled away from the desperate crowd and sailed off.

The people on the stairs could only watch helplessly.

That was when the old woman ran down, shouting after the boats as they disappeared, “Someone was murdered! There’s a killer in this building! Send people to catch her! Don’t you care about us common folk? You cowards, come arrest her!”

But the boats were already gone.

Many upstairs had spotted the boats too, and the noise of all their shouting quickly drowned

out the old woman’s cries.
