The sweet burst of coconut jelly filled Caroline’s mouth and lifted her mood at once.

She shut the door, hugged her dog, and ignored the shouting outside. After finishing her drink, she decided it was time to open packages.
“This is hard labor. If only Raven and Jet could help me.”
She cleared out an empty room and pulled out dozens of parcels from her storage space. The boxes piled up into a small mountain. She sighed.
Raven padded in, grabbed one box in his mouth, and trotted over. His tail wagged hard, his eyes shining with expectation.
Caroline raised a brow. Clearly, there was something inside.
“Smart boy. What did you find?”
Caroline took the delivery box from Raven’s mouth and crouched down to open it.
The moment the flaps came apart, she burst out laughing. Just as she suspected, it was a whole case of canned dog food, venison flavor, Raven’s favorite.
Under his eager gaze, she opened a can and gave him a bonus meal.
Jet fluttered around the pile but didn’t find anything exciting. At last he plopped in front of the tablet and turned his attention to the drama Caroline hadn’t finished.
Caroline spread a mat and got to work.
It had to be said, the packages from the delivery hub contained just about everything.
The food and drinks alone were endless.
Right before the hub shut down, the panic about the end of the world was at its worst.
People had gone online and ordered all kinds of things, which had piled up there.
Caroline had already opened several cases of soda. She also found plenty of binge–watching snacks, bags of spicy beef jerky, hot wings, and seasoned potato chips.
And then there were all sorts of odds and ends. Cans of paint, build–it–yourself kids‘ toys, even a hammock for the backyard.

On their own, the stuff looked useless. But with the Junk Eater, nothing ever went to waste, everything could be turned into something useful.
She even pulled out three brand–new walkie–talkies, the latest model from a big brand.
Caroline’s lips curved. Perfect. One for her, one for Tyler, and one for Kay.
They didn’t need them yet, but the day would come when they had to leave the building.
She skimmed the manual. The walkie–talkies were newly designed, with a clear signal within three miles. Each was half the size of a palm, light, and came with a cord for hanging around the neck. Simple and handy.
Next, she found several inflatable rafts.
Probably bought by cautious folks after all that nonstop rain.
Caroline hadn’t stocked any rafts. She had only stored inflatable rescue boats.
She figured those were far more useful.
Still, no one ever complained about having too many options to travel.
Even if she didn’t use them, they’d be good for trade.
Later in the afternoon, she uncovered something even better.
It was part of a motorcycle sidecar.
Not the engine, not the front frame, just the sidecar itself with two wheels attached.
Caroline studied it, then glanced at Raven. A sly grin spread across her face.
Caroline was already plotting. When she had the time, she’d tinker with the sidecar and turn it into a little cart for Raven to pull. After all, what was the point of raising a big dog if you couldn’t put him to work once in a while?
Raven was gnawing on a dog bone Caroline had pulled from one of the delivery boxes when he suddenly froze.
He felt her cold stare from across the room and tensed up, even forgetting to chew.
