So when the storage space tried to pull a trick on her, she grabbed every cardboard box she had unpacked that afternoon and tossed the whole lot into the JunkEater.

Since the rule was one item per day, she got around it by cramming the big boxes with smaller ones, stuffing the little ones with paper bags, and wrapping the whole bundle up tight with

rope.

When she was done, Caroline dusted off her hands and shot the JunkEater a look that said, “Haha! You think you can outsmart me?”

With that out of the way, she sat down to enjoy a good dinner.

She had left Jet to binge–watch shows on its own all afternoon. To her surprise, it had become a little obsessed with what it was watching!

“Your Majesty… I’m hungry!”

When Jet croaked out this line in a hoarse voice, Caroline had just heated up a cup of milk and nearly sprayed it everywhere. What in the world?

What on earth was that?

Caroline burst out laughing as she served Jet its dinner, while quietly shutting off the period drama she had been binge–watching for days.

She figured she’d switch to some fun variety shows tomorrow–no way she was letting that parrot get hooked on more drama.

Not long after finishing dinner, she heard a knock on her door.

Caroline opened it and found Kay standing there, her face giving nothing away.

“What’s wrong?” Caroline asked through the door.

She wasn’t very familiar with Kay and didn’t feel like inviting her in.

“Err… The acid rain outside has stopped,” Kay replied.

Caroline nodded slightly. She had already known that the acid rain would stop soon, so it didn’t surprise her.

“They said rescue teams came this morning, but left again. Supposedly, supplies will be

handed out later.”

Caroline nodded again.

She noticed that when Kay talked about “rescue” and “supplies,” she didn’t seem excited at all. That felt strange to her.

“You don’t seem very happy, Caroline said. “Everyone else in the building has been freaking out with excitement today. They all think help is finally on the way.”

Kay let out a cold huff. Her already scarred face looked even more frightening at that moment.

“Caroline, may I call you that? You saved my life, and I truly want to be closer to you. But right now, I can’t even take care of myself–I rely on your protection. I have nothing to give you in return, so these past two days, I kept my distance.”

Caroline stayed silent, waiting to hear more.

“I feel like this isn’t over yet.” Kay’s gaze was firm. “Before the internet was shut down, I used a VPN to check some international news. The whole world’s in trouble. This isn’t just a regular disaster. If rescue teams could really pull people out of this crisis immediately, they would have already taken action instead of saying we have to wait a few more days.”

Caroline couldn’t help but respect Kay’s viewpoint.

They talked for a little while longer before parting ways.

Later that night, Caroline thought about asking Kay about Ivor–maybe she knew how many people were in his crew or which floor they were on. It never hurts to be prepared.

But when she knocked on Kay’s door, no one answered for a long time.

She wondered if Kay had gone out, but then she heard Tyler from across the hall opening his door.

Without a word, he kicked Kay’s door open.

“Since she got home this afternoon, she hasn’t left. I’ve been listening closely, worried someone might come looking for trouble,” Tyler explained.

It was clear he was on high alert.

As soon as she entered, Caroline saw Kay collapsed on the floor.
