Where there was danger, there was always trouble waiting. Right now, they had enough supplies, so there was no point in taking risks.

Caroline slept well tonight. When morning came, loud shouting outside woke her echoed through the building.

Even though there were a few doors between her and the noise, she could still hear people yelling.

Then, someone knocked on her door.

She quickly threw on some clothes, grabbed Raven, and opened the door.

Tyler was at the door, looking serious.

“The government just dropped off supplies. They’re on our roof. Now everyone downstairs is blocking the stairs, yelling for us to let them up.”

Sure enough, the shouts from the stairwell carried through.

“Those jerks on the 66th floor want to keep everything for themselves!”

“Shameless! Call the cops and lock them up!”

“They don’t care if we starve!”

The cursing dragged on.

Caroline glanced at the neighbors. Their angry faces looked ready to tear the 66th–floor residents apart.

She frowned. “It’s way too noisy for this early in the day.”

Then, she sneered.

When Caroline led Raven to the stairwell, she saw the same old woman who had once brought her grandson to threaten her. Now that woman was shouting at the door.

Her voice was sharp, and her tone full of arrogance. She was only bold because she had a mob

behind her.

When she came to Caroline alone, she hadn’t acted that tough. But now, with backup, she was

From what Caroline heard, her name was Bethany Grant, though people just called her “Mrs. Grant.”

It wasn’t respect–no one actually liked her.

Before the apocalypse, if someone made her mad, she’d scream at their door for days and spit on their doorstep.

People reported her, but it didn’t help. She’d throw tantrums and act like the victim. Even the police admitted she was impossible to deal with.

After the world changed, Bethany started using her age and her grandson to stir up trouble, demanding food from others as if they owed her.

If people refused, she accused them of starving her grandson or picking on an old lady.

Lately, since the rescue teams showed up, she had gotten even worse.

She’d show up at people’s doors. If they didn’t give her anything, she’d scream that they were killing folks. Then, she’d threaten to report them when the rescue team returned.

Most people in the building were young, and honestly, nobody wanted to fight with the unreasonable Bethany.

She hadn’t met anyone willing to put her in her place, and the younger ones downstairs let her push them around.

Now she stood in front of a crowd. In front of Caroline, she lifted her chin, yelling, “Do you even know you’re breaking the law? When the rescue comes and we all get out, I’ll have you reported and tossed in jail!”

Caroline couldn’t help but laugh at Bethany’s drama.

Bethany didn’t seem to realize that no one would be going to jail anymore. Prisons were probably empty already.

Tyler and Kay came out as well.

Kay’s face was still healing, scabbed and ugly–looking.

Some people who had known her before whispered and stared.

But Kay just stood there cold and quiet, unfazed.
