Chapter 176

His throat tightened, his eyes wet. “I’ve made mistakes before, but this… this is the one I can’t live with I regret it every single day. It eats at me, Emily.”

“You went too far.” My voice cracked, but I pushed on, shaking my head. “Too far.”

“I didn’t think it would get that far,” he whispered, desperate now. “I thought it would just… shift things. Change the course. And every time I told myself I’d confess, I couldn’t. I’d chicken out.”

I leaned back, my chest rising and falling unevenly. “So that’s why you kept hovering. Why you always checked in, acted like a friend. Was it guilt you were dragging around?”

His lips parted, trembling. “Partly, yes. Do you remember the day I visited you at school and asked you to give me a chance? I wanted to tell you then, but I couldn’t bear the thought of you looking at me differently.”

My stomach twisted. The weight of all those months of misplaced trust hollowed me out from the inside.

“If you were me,” I asked slowly, “what would you do to you? Answer me honestly, Kelvin.”

He didn’t even blink. “I’d crush myself.”

The honesty in his tone sent a chill through me. Because that was exactly what he deserved.

“Have you told anyone else?” My voice was sharp again.

He shook his head quickly. “No. I came to you because you’re the one I wronged most. You were the only one who deserved to know.”

I swallowed hard, anger burning hot and bitter in my chest. “I thought you were my friend. And this is what you did to me? This is how you treat your friends?”

Tears welled in his eyes. “I’m sorry, Emily. Truly. I’ll accept whatever you decide. If you hate me forever, it’s justified.”

I pushed back my chair and stood, my bag clutched tight in my hand. “I don’t even know what could justify what you did. But I know this, I don’t want you in my life anymore. Don’t call me. Don’t text me. Don’t show up. From today on, you’re a ghost.”

His shoulders sagged as though I had struck him. His eyes shone with a grief I didn’t care to

soothe

I hesitated only for a breath. “Forgive yourself first. Maybe someday I’ll find the strength to do the same. But not today.

And then I walked away.

Back home that night, my thoughts refused to settle. The truth lingered at the edge of every breath, demanding to be spoken. I couldn’t keep it from Liam, not forever. But how? One wrong move and the whole world between us could shatter.

Later, when we lay in bed, Liam talked about a new product line his company was preparing. He asked me what I thought, like he always did, even when he didn’t need my opinion. He just valued hearing it.

I let him finish, then forced my voice to sound casual. “Liam, why aren’t you and Kelvin close anymore?”

His eyes flicked to me, and he let out a long breath. “You already know why. The fight. The bitterness. He couldn’t handle losing, and I couldn’t live with the resentment. That’s what broke us.”

“It’s been long enough,” I pressed gently. “Maybe you could patch things up.”

His tone turned sharp. “Never. Because of him, I lost a friend. I won’t forgive that kind of betrayal.”

My pulse jumped, but I forced the next words. “And if he ever did something to me… what would you do?”

His head turned fully now, his eyes locking on mine.

“I’d destroy him.”

My heart stuttered.

“Emily.” His tone softened, but suspicion edged it. “This isn’t random. Where is this headed?”

I stayed quiet, panic swirling.

“Remember our promise,” he said firmly. “No more secrets.”
