Chapter 175

“The good news,” I continued, “is that the Blacks are also the most protective, jealous people alive. That’s the card you pull if you want her to claim you out loud.”

He tilted his head. “How?”

“Do you have any upcoming projects with a female artist?”

He thought for a moment. “Yeah. A collab is dropping next week.”

“Perfect. You know those PR games your industry plays when they want buzz around a release? The rumors, the speculation?”

His eyes widened. “You’re suggesting I fake-date her?”

“Not exactly.” I waved him off.

“No hand-holding pap shots, nothing dramatic. Just… don’t stop the rumors when they start. Let the blogs do their job. You’re still single to the public until Sophia says otherwise. All it’ll take is one whiff of a headline for her to panic.”

Mason shifted uncomfortably. “She’s not going to like that. And Liam, he’ll think I’m playing games. He doesn’t even like me yet.”

“Liam already knows,” I reassured him. “Trust me, nothing happens without him being in the loop.”

Mason studied me carefully. “And if Sophia asks?”

“Tell her the truth. Speculation won’t stop until you make it clear you’re taken. If she wants it to stop, you two go public.”

Slowly, a smile spread across his face. “That’s actually genius.”

“I know,” I smirked.

He shook his head. “When I first met you, you seemed so sweet. Now? Not so much.”

I laughed. “Believe Jay. Sophia corrupted me.”

Mason chuckled “Sophia? She’s too sweet and calm to corrupt anyone

I nearly choked “Sweet, yes Calm? Not even close. But you’ll see for yourself.”

“Should I be scared or prepared?”

“Both”

We wrapped up lunch with lighter chatter, but just as I stood to leave, my phone buzzed.

From Kelvin.

Emily, please. I need to see you. Alone.

My stomach tightened. The last time I’d seen him was in Liam’s office.

I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the screen. My first instinct was to forward the message to Liam. But no, I’d hear him out first, then tell Liam everything. We made that promise together.

No more secrets between us.

I typed a quick reply with the restaurant name.

Mason stood to leave. “You sure you don’t want to head home yet?”

“I’ll stay a little longer,” I said lightly.

He nodded. “Thanks again, Emily.”

“Don’t thank me yet. The hard part’s coming.”

Kelvin arrived a while later, his expression tense. He greeted me quietly and sat across from me. Silence stretched between us, heavy and expectant.

He was the one who asked for this meeting. So I waited for him to speak.

Finally, he exhaled. “I have a confession.”

My pulse raced. “Okay.”

He looked down at his hands. “You remember what I told you about Liam and me? The fight that ruined everything?”

“Yes.”

“Leo tried to fix it once back in St. Barts He got us in the same room, thinking it would mend things Instead, it made them worse Words were thrown around. Liam told me I’d always be a sore loser, that you’d never look at me the way you looked at him. And when you chose him… he gloated”

Kelvin’s jaw clenched “I hated it Hated him. When you had that accident…”

Dread coiled in my chest

“I did something terrible.” he whispered. “I’ve carried it too long. I can’t anymore.”

“God. Kelvin, stop dragging it out. What did you do?”
