Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 109

“How could I ever blame you?” Amelia’s voice was soft, her eyes shining with tears. “Sweetheart, you’re only five—just a few minutes older than Penny. Taking care of yourself is already such a big thing. And you’re the best big brother in the whole world.”

Timmy sat stiffly in her arms, unsure what to do. Part of him wanted to pull away, but as he raised his hand, he hesitated.

Her hug was so warm.

He breathed in her scent—clean and gentle, not like perfume, just something comforting and safe.

How could someone feel so warm, even in the way they smelled?

“Timmy, honey, go have some dinner, okay? Mommy will look after Penny.” Amelia let him go, tucking a loose strand of hair behind his ear as she spoke.

He still looked worried. “Are you sure we don’t need to call Dr. Reed?”

Amelia gave him a gentle smile. “No need, sweetheart. Mommy’s a great doctor too, remember?”

He opened his mouth to say more, but when he met her eyes, the words got stuck. Plus, he really was hungry, so he just nodded and quietly went to eat.

Amelia watched him leave, then glanced up at the blue superhero cape hanging over Penny’s bed—the one Penny treated like her favorite treasure. Anger twisted in Amelia’s chest.

Before, she’d just thought Kristen was awful. Her and Clive, both selfish and cold. But now, Amelia could barely stop herself from imagining slapping Kristen across the face.

Penny adored her, listened to her every word. If Kristen had told her, even once, to put on a jacket, Penny would’ve done it in a heartbeat.

But Kristen hadn’t. She’d never really cared for Penny, not deep down.

And Clive… back then, he probably only saw Kristen, never his own kids at all.

Amelia clenched her fists, swallowing her anger. She went to get a bowl of hot water, wet a towel, and gently wiped Penny’s feverish skin.

Penny stirred, her eyelids fluttering as she tried to focus. She couldn’t see clearly, but she felt the warmth and care beside her.

Half-awake, she reached out, tiny fingers catching Amelia’s hand just as she was about to pull away. Her lips moved, murmuring something.
