“Thank you, sweetheart. Mommy’s not sad anymore.” Amelia’s voice was soft and sincere as she looked at her little one.
She was honestly grateful for these two kids. Even if Penny still kept her distance, at least Timmy’s affection made things a bit easier.
When they walked into the dining room, Mrs. Salmeron was already there, sitting at the head of the table with a frosty look that said she was not in a good mood. No one knew who had upset her this time.
“Great-grandma!” Timmy called out, his voice sweet as sugar.
“Oh, my darling boy!” Mrs. Salmeron’s whole face lit up when she saw him.
“Grandma,” Amelia greeted her, polite and gentle.
That made Mrs. Salmeron smile even wider.
“Timmy, go sit with Penny. Amelia, come here, dear,” she called out, waving Amelia over. Then she shot a glare at Clive, who was sitting stiffly at her right. “What are you doing just sitting there? Help your wife with her chair!”
Clive stood up right away and pulled out the chair next to him for Amelia.
Only then did Mrs. Salmeron look satisfied.
Across the table, Caroline rolled her eyes so hard it was a wonder they didn’t stick. She wanted to say something snarky about Amelia playing the perfect daughter-in-law, but she held her tongue.
She wouldn’t dare say anything in front of Mrs. Salmeron. The old lady might be up there in years, but she was sharp as a tack. She owned most of the company and even this estate.
Everyone knew Mrs. Salmeron had a soft spot for Amelia, her granddaughter-in-law, way more than for Caroline, her actual granddaughter. If Caroline ever tried to cross Amelia with the old lady around, she’d probably be out on the curb before dessert.
“Clive, serve Amelia some soup,” Mrs. Salmeron commanded. Clive did as he was told, no questions asked.
When Amelia reached for the bowl, her fingers brushed against Clive’s. The bowl was hot, and she pulled back a little.
Clive glanced at her and said quietly, “It’s hot. Let me.”
She let him set the bowl in front of her. Mrs. Salmeron looked very pleased.
“Amelia, when you’re feeling better, you and Clive should give me another great-grandbaby. The more the merrier, and we can definitely afford it.”
