Rachel: Boss, you really need to watch out for Kristen.
Amelia stared at Rachel’s message. She started to type a reply, changed her mind, and deleted it. In the end, she just sent a quick “Okay,” turned off her phone, and tossed it on the couch. She forced herself to focus on work.
Honestly, even if it wasn’t Kristen, there would be someone else—Lisa, Karen, whoever. If she was being real with herself, the problem was Clive. He didn’t love her enough, and he definitely didn’t know how to stay faithful.
All Amelia could do now was hope everything went smoothly on Saturday. If she could land the West Medicine deal by herself, she’d finally have the leverage she needed to talk divorce with Clive.
She stayed at the office until ten. By the time she got home, it was already half past ten.
As soon as she walked in, Donna appeared from the kitchen, carrying two glasses of milk, clearly headed upstairs for Timmy and Penny.
“Mrs. North, you’re home so late again,” Donna said, concern written all over her face. “Want me to whip up a little snack for you?”
“No, thanks, Donna. You should go rest.” Amelia took the milk from her with a smile. “I’ll bring it up to them.”
Donna handed over the glasses without a second thought. She knew the kids—especially Penny—weren’t close to Amelia, and she hoped this would give them a chance to bond.
“Don’t be too hard on yourself, Mrs. North,” Donna added gently. “There’s still plenty of time for you and the kids to get close.”
Amelia just nodded, thinking to herself that if she really did file for divorce, who knew how much time they’d have left together? But she didn’t say any of that out loud.
She headed upstairs with the milk.
The kids’ door was slightly open. She peeked inside—Timmy was sitting on his bed, completely absorbed in a programming book. Penny wasn’t there, but the balcony door was open, and Amelia could see the swing moving, with two little feet poking out.
Timmy didn’t even look up when he heard her. He just said politely, “Thanks, Donna.”
“If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can always ask Mom for help,” Amelia said softly.
That got his attention. Timmy glanced up at her, saw her smiling, and suddenly looked a little shy.
