Forty minutes later, the taxi stopped at the entrance to Baybridge University.

Seven years had gone by since Amelia last stood here. She looked up at the gold letters over the gate, and a rush of emotions hit her all at once.

Students were coming and going around her, their faces glowing with the confidence of youth. At this top university, it seemed like everyone was full of promise and possibility.

Amelia could almost see her old self in them.

She took a deep breath, pulled herself together, and walked over to the security booth to sign in.

The guard glanced at the name she wrote and called out with a chuckle, “Hey, your name’s Amelia too? There was a genius here a while back with that name—she was super famous.”

Amelia just smiled, didn’t say much, and set the pen down before heading off toward Mr. Arrowood’s research lab.

Inside, the place was packed with cutting-edge equipment, the kind you’d only see in the best labs. The instrument Amelia needed had already arrived months ago, thanks to Mr. Arrowood.

She found a brand new lab coat in the cabinet, slipped it on, and dove right into her work, letting everything else fade away.

By the time she finished, four hours had vanished.

She rubbed her stiff neck and glanced out the window. The sun was setting, painting the sky with streaks of pink and gold.

For a moment, it really did feel like she was back in college again.

Back then, she was always the last one to leave the lab or the library...

Amelia took off the lab coat, changed back into her own clothes, and grabbed her phone—which was still on silent. That’s when she saw two missed calls from Rachel.

Worried that something might be wrong, Amelia called her back as she walked out.

Rachel picked up right away, sounding relieved. “Boss, you finally answered!”

“What’s up?” Amelia asked, bending down to lock the lab door.

The lock needed to be turned three times, and with her injured hand, it was a bit of a struggle.
