Amelia couldn’t help but find it all a little ridiculous.
She almost wanted to ask him, after all these years, when exactly had he ever treated her with any kind of softness? But before she could get a word out, Clive’s hand closed around the back of her neck, his grip firm and unyielding. He yanked her toward him so suddenly she barely had time to breathe.
She hissed in pain, sucking in a sharp breath. Her hand groped behind her, fingers closing around a small cold metal ornament.
“Clive, you’re hurting me.” Her voice was low, a warning just barely held together. There was a flash of anger in her eyes.
She didn’t want to cause a scene. The kids might still be awake, and whatever else happened, Clive was their father. She didn’t want them to see their parents like this. Plus, Donna was downstairs—probably reporting everything straight to Mrs. Salmeron.
“Hurt?” Clive gave a short, bitter laugh. The alcohol wasn’t enough to make him drunk, but it had definitely stripped away his patience.
“Amelia.” He leaned in close, his breath hot against her cheek, his voice low and rough. “I’m done playing this game. Can we just stop pretending? Be good. Let’s end this here.”
Amelia almost laughed out loud.
Even now, he still thought she was just teasing him, just playing hard to get.
She took a slow, careful breath, one hand braced against his chest, the other gripping the metal ornament tight behind her back.
“Clive, you’re drunk.” She tried to keep her voice as calm as possible. “Let me get Donna to make you some tea or something. You need to sober up.”
“Donna?” Clive’s eyes were dark and intense, fixed on her. His tone sounded light, but there was no warmth in his gaze. “And what about you, Amelia?”
She’d just showered, her skin still damp and warm, the faint scent of soap clinging to her. Clive’s gaze lingered, his throat working as he swallowed.
“Amelia, how exactly are you going to take care of me tonight?”
