Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 409

Amelia barely stopped moving all afternoon.

At some point, her phone rang. It was Mrs. Salmeron.

On the other end, Mrs. Salmeron sounded anxious and embarrassed. “Amelia, Clive’s stomach is acting up again. He’s in the hospital, just finished an IV, but he’s still hurting… The medicine you used to get for him always worked, but the pharmacy didn’t deliver it this month.”

That was Amelia’s doing. She’d told the pharmacy to stop sending it. She didn’t care about getting her money back. She just didn’t want to help anymore.

“Don’t worry too much, Mrs. Salmeron,” Amelia said, breezy and almost casual. “Clive’s stomach has been under control for years now. This pain isn’t serious. He’ll just have to deal with it for a while.”

Mrs. Salmeron was sitting right by Clive’s hospital bed, her voice turned up because her hearing wasn’t what it used to be.

Clive lay there with his eyes closed, but he was wide awake, listening to every word.

Amelia’s meaning couldn’t have been clearer. She wasn’t going to care about him anymore.

Clive’s hand, still hooked up to the IV, curled tightly into a fist. Blood started backing up in the tube.

Amelia’s voice stayed cool. “Really, it’s nothing. No need to worry the kids over this.”

That was the last straw. Clive’s eyes snapped open, veins standing out on his hand as he grabbed the phone from Mrs. Salmeron.

“Amelia!” Just saying her name made his stomach twist in pain. His anger was about to boil over. “You—”

But Amelia didn’t give him a chance. The moment she heard his voice, she hung up.

The dial tone echoed in Clive’s ears, making his head pound. He squeezed the phone so hard his hand shook.

Donna, who’d seen plenty of drama in her day, rushed over. “Clive, that’s Mrs. Salmeron’s phone! If you need to smash something, at least use your own!”
