“Yes, that’s her!” Nathan grinned, totally missing the shift in the room’s mood. “Wait, bro, you know her too?” He was as oblivious as ever, but Francisco—watching from the corner—could almost feel the tension radiating from the boss. He finally had to cover his face, bracing for the fallout.
Nathan, eager to be helpful, kept going. “Ryan, about Amelia? I heard she grew up dirt poor. No parents, just her granddad, some broke old doctor. But she’s got guts—marrying Clive was like winning the lottery. Too bad her luck ran out fast. She didn’t even make it two years before she, you know… died in childbirth.”
Francisco couldn’t take it anymore. He fake-coughed, then kicked Nathan’s ankle and shot him a look that screamed, Shut up!
Nathan blinked, clueless. “Francisco, you sick or something? Why kick me?”
Francisco just stared at him. What’s the point? Hints were wasted on this guy.
The elevator doors slid open to the lobby. Ryan tossed his phone to Nathan and strode out, his steps sharp and unhurried.
Nathan glanced at the phone. The video of Amelia was already gone.
Outside, the car was waiting at the curb. Francisco hurried ahead, opened the back door for Ryan, then slipped into the passenger seat.
Nathan jogged after them, but when he tried the door, it wouldn’t budge.
He knocked on the window, confused. “Bro, I’m not in yet!”
Inside, Ryan ignored him completely and said to the driver, face cold, “Let’s go.”
The black Maybach glided away, leaving Nathan standing there, totally lost.
Inside the car, the silence was suffocating.
Finally, Ryan spoke, his voice icy. “Look into this Caroline.”
“Yes, sir.” Francisco answered calmly, but he risked a quick glance at Ryan in the rearview mirror. Someone was about to have a very bad day.
Night had settled in by the time Amelia’s car finally pulled up to the villa—almost two hours later.
It should’ve only taken an hour to get back from the Salmeron estate, but after a call, the driver started taking detours on purpose.
Amelia didn’t ask why. She already knew—this was Clive’s way of making sure she got home late because Penny didn’t want to see her before bed.
Clive’s car was already parked out front.
