Clive was either dead silent or gave her the same half-hearted excuse: “You’ll get it when you’re older.”
Kristen was even worse. Amelia could never forget the way Kristen would lean down, her voice as sweet as syrup, and say to her daughter, “Penny, since your real mom is just lying there and doesn’t want you, why don’t we stop wanting her too, okay?”
Every time Amelia thought about it, it felt like someone was cutting into her heart.
Clive and Kristen—what a pair. Together, they’d stolen the love her kids should’ve given her.
In these past five years, if Clive had explained even once to Timmy and Penny how much their mother loved them, loved them enough to give up everything… maybe Penny wouldn’t have clung to Kristen the way she did, calling her “Momma Kristen” like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Amelia’s fingers tightened around her glass of milk until she thought it might crack. She swallowed her anger and hurt, forcing herself to smile.
“I understand, Clive. I’ll be more careful from now on.”
Clive seemed pleased with her answer.
He changed the subject. “Oh, and Amelia, I talked to Dad today. The R&D manager position is still yours. I’ll have HR set everything up—you can start back at the company next week.”
That actually caught Amelia by surprise.
Right then, Clive’s phone buzzed on the table. He didn’t bother to hide it, just unlocked it right in front of her.
A message from Klaus Bailey.
He’d sent a voice note.
Clive glanced at her, then converted the audio to text.
Klaus: “Clive, I’ve confirmed it with the execs at West Medicine. Now that Ryan’s in charge, the next big focus is Alzheimer’s drug development. That’s right in Amelia’s wheelhouse! Wasn’t her college research with Dr. Borgen all about Alzheimer’s?”
Amelia nearly laughed.
So that was it. That’s why Clive suddenly wanted her back as head of R&D.
“Who messaged you, Clive?” Amelia asked, pretending not to notice anything.
