A sharp slap echoed through the air.
Amelia stumbled, the taste of blood spreading across her tongue in an instant.
Caroline hadn’t held back at all. She stared at Amelia’s split lip with a twisted kind of satisfaction, eyes glinting with cruel pride.
“Scheming behind my back now, Amelia? Guess you’ve finally learned a trick or two.”
Everything happened so fast that Diana was still catching up. Her face flushed with anger, she shoved up her sleeves, ready to go after Caroline right then and there.
“You crazy—”
But Amelia spun around, blocking her with both arms.
“I’m fine,” she whispered, trying to calm Diana down, even as her eyes flicked to the corner where a paparazzo crouched with his camera, snapping away.
Amelia had noticed him as soon as they’d left the café. But Diana was bundled up in a scarf and sunglasses—nothing for the press to feast on, she thought.
But if Diana got caught on camera throwing a punch in public, all her hopes for Mr. Schuck’s new movie would go up in smoke.
Inside the car, their manager had caught sight of the paparazzo too. She quickly set her phone aside, ready to intervene.
Diana was fuming, struggling against Amelia’s hold. “Amelia, let me go! I swear, today I’m going to—”
Before she could finish, the manager leaned over from the backseat, clapping a firm hand over Diana’s mouth.
“Please, just keep it together!” she hissed.
Diana already had a reputation for drama—the last thing she needed was to get caught cursing on camera. That would be front-page news in a heartbeat.
Caroline finally realized who Diana was. She glanced at Amelia, lips curling in a sneer. Of course Amelia was protecting Diana, holding her back. That desperate social climber had spent years groveling at her brother’s feet—no way she’d ever dare hit back. She was always scheming, always begging for a scrap of attention.
If John had gotten involved, it had to be Diana who’d gone to him without Amelia knowing. Amelia would never have the nerve.
