…
Amelia sat quietly, not buying it for a second.
She barely knew John, and the Salmeron family was practically royalty around here. For John to shut Caroline out so bluntly—like she was nothing—was basically picking a fight with the whole Salmeron clan.
All because of a video she posted? That couldn’t be it.
In business, it was always about profit. Amelia couldn’t imagine John being reckless enough to offend the Salmerons over something so small. There had to be more to the story—something she was missing.
Try as she might, she couldn’t figure it out. Still, it felt like there was an invisible hand quietly protecting her…
Back at the house, with Marian out, Amelia took the chance to slip a tiny camera into the corner of the kitchen.
She glanced at the clock. Timmy and Penny would be home from school any minute now.
Amelia had just finished unpacking the sushi and desserts she’d brought when tires crunched outside.
They were home.
Her cheek still throbbed from Caroline’s slap. She swept her hair over the swelling, not wanting the kids to notice.
The front door swung open. Timmy and Penny tumbled in first, Clive following with a stormy look on his face.
Amelia could guess why—Caroline must’ve already called to complain.
She didn’t bother with him. Still playing blind, she just smiled at the kids.
“Timmy, Penny, you’re home?” she said warmly. “I picked up sushi and some treats for you—they’re on the table. Timmy, take your sister to wash your hands before—”
She didn’t get to finish. Clive’s voice cut through, sharp and cold. “Timmy, take your sister to the study and practice piano. I need to talk to your mom.”
Amelia’s smile slipped away.
