Marian would never risk her two precious grandsons—no way, not for anything.
Only now did she realize just how wrong she’d been about Amelia. She might look gentle on the outside, but underneath? She was downright scary.
Marian swallowed, her legs wobbling as she dropped back into her chair. All that earlier attitude of hers completely vanished.
“Ma’am, I—I’ll listen to whatever you say.”
Right now, Amelia seemed less like a person and more like some unstoppable force.
Amelia leaned back on the sofa, her voice cool. “I don’t want a single word of this conversation leaving this house.”
Marian glanced at the photos of her grandsons. Any thought of arguing melted away. “Don’t worry, ma’am. I won’t say a thing.”
Amelia slid a bank card across the table. “That’s four months’ pay. Think of it as thanks for looking after Timmy and Penny these past two years—even if it wasn’t always smooth sailing.”
Marian would never say no to money. She took the card gratefully, hands still shaking. “Thank you, ma’am!”
A little reward, a little warning—that’s what worked best with people like Marian.
Amelia stood up and shot a look at the mess in the kitchen. “Before you leave, please make sure everything’s spotless.” With that, she headed upstairs.
With Marian out of the picture, Amelia needed to find a new nanny before she returned to work on Monday.
She was about to call her grandmother to ask for a recommendation—Clive wouldn’t object, and anyone her grandmother trusted would be fine by her—when her phone buzzed. Diana was calling.
Amelia picked up, and before she could say anything, Diana’s excited voice filled her ear.
“Amelia! You won’t believe it—I’ve got amazing news! Caroline’s gone viral! Check out the video I just sent you!”
