Chapter 131

Chapter 131

Alpha Ethan’s POV

It had been hours since Raven had gone out to get the blueberries, and I was getting sick with worry. I sighed in frustration as I took a sip from the drink that sat untouched for long on my desk.

It didn’t help, nothing did, my eyes kept flicking toward the window, scanning the thinning woods behind the pack house even though I knew I wouldn’t see her from here.

I shouldn’t have let her go alone. I shouldn’t have even sent her in the first place.

My jaw tightened, and I slammed the glass down a bit harder than necessary, the clink echoing through the otherwise silent study.

What if something happened to her?

What if rogues had attacked?

What if she was hurtor worse?

And what if she was out there, unable to make it back? The idea clawed into my chest like a physical pain.

I wouldn’t have sent her out alone if I knew,I muttered to no one. What if rogues attacked her? What if she was seriously injured and couldn’t even come back?

I rubbed my forehead, the guilt washing over me in heavy waves.

Blueberries that’s what I’d sent her for. Stupid blueberries. I leaned back into the chair, letting the guilt gnaw at me as I stared up at the ceiling.

I just want her back,” I muttered under my breath, softer now. I don’t give a damn about those damn blueberries anymore.”

Before I could spiral further into my thoughts, the door burst open with a loud bang.

Where did you send her?Matthew barked, eyes wild with anger.

I blink, caught off guard by his intrusion. What?

Reven!he snapped, marching toward my desk. Where the hell did you send her?

I leaned back, trying to keep my composure, though his sudden panic only heightened my own. I sent her to get blueberries. What’s this about?

Matthew’s brows furrowed with disbelief. You sent her alone?

She’s my maid. I asked her to fetch some fresh blueberries from the woods.

There are blueberries in the mall fridge, Ethan!he shouted, slamming his palms on my desk. Why didn’t you just ask for those?

I didn’t want those,I said through clenched teeth, I wanted freshly plucked ones, alright? What is your problem?

My problem?he said, his voice laced with disbelief. My problem is that you sent her out alone into the woods! Have you lost your damn mind?

She can handle herself,I shot back, though the words rang hollow even in my own ears.

He glared at me. She’s not a damn warrior. She’s a maid. And she’s been through hell,

Why would you risk her safety over berries? If you care about her that much, you can go and look for her, then stay here and tell her things to do and things not to. I exhaled sharply, irritation boiling in my chest.

If you’re done lecturing me, Matthew, get the hell out of my study. You betrayed me,I spat, my voice laced with venom, rising from my seat. That exactly what you did.

I saw the way the word hit him like a slap across the face, but instead of reacting with remorse, he laughed. That smug, taunting laugh that always made my blood boil.

So you’re still pissed,he said, stepping back slightly with a crooked smirk. Still bitter that I took her from you. That she chose me.

My fists clenched at my sides.

That I’m better than you,Matthew went on, in caring for a woman. In treating her the way she deserves.

Don’t flatter yourself,I growled, stepping around the desk. You think that makes you a better man? You might have fed her and bandaged her wounds, Matthew, but you weren’t there when she cried herself to sleep. You weren’t the one she looked at first every morning.

He scoffed. Please. You treat her like a possession, not a person. That’s why she left you in the first place. You don’t know how to love, only how to own.

I didn’t let his words show on my face, but they cut deep. And I couldn’t stop the bitterness that followed.

At least I don’t pretend to be a saint,I said lowly. You think you’re better than me just because you act gentle? You’re not.

You’re just as selfish as I am; the only difference is that you hide it behind that pathetic knightinshiningarmor mask.*

Matthew’s jaw ticked. You want the truth, Ethan? You want to know why she didn’t stay with you? Because you don’t see her. Not really. You only see what you want from her.

I laughed, a dry, humorless sound. And you think you do? Please. You’re no savior, Matthew. And don’t forget, for all your talk about being better, you were a second choice. If I wanted to, I could take her back in a heartbeat.

Try it,he snapped. Try and you’ll see who she really chooses.

My lips twisted into a cruel smirk. You’re delusional if you think you satisfy her better than I did. You might be her knight, but I’m the one who knows what she craves when the lights are off.”

His face reddened in fury. Don’t you dare, and if

But I couldn’t finish the sentence.

Because suddenly, something shifted.

A scent.

Faint at first, but growing stronger,

froze.

It was like my lungs stopped working. My body tensed, senses going into overdrive. My wolf stirred suddenly, more alert than he had been in six years.

Six whole years.

The scent drifted through the crack under the doof like a ghost, and the instant it touched my senses, my wolf howled. Loudly. Inside me.

Mine.

The possessiveness that rolled through me was wild, primal. My heart slammed hard against my ribs.

Matthew was still speaking, his voice raised, but I couldn’t hear a damn thing he was saying. It was like everything else in the room had vanished.

My wolf was pacing in my mind, his fur bristling, his tail high, his chest puffed.

Mate.
