I sat quietly as I looked at Matthew. I could see the worry in his eyes. He tried to hide it, but I knew him too well.
I wanted to tell him that I would go and look for her regardless of where she was.
I wanted to say that I would not stop until I found her. But I could not tell him. I did not want him to know that I still had feelings for her.
Matthew rubbed his head and let out a heavy sigh. “Ethan… I don’t know what to do anymore. It has been too long. I can’t sit here while she might be out there suffering. I should go myself and check.”
I saw my chance. “No,” I said quickly, leaning forward in my chair. “I will go there first thing tomorrow morning.”
Matthew’s eyes looked at me in surprise. “You? Ethan, you don’t have to do that. You already have too much to handle.
I can do it.”
And you know your legs you can’t walk with a wheelchair. I don’t want to stress you, he said, his tone filled with concern. I shook my head firmly. “It is not a stress, Matthew.
I want to go. And more than that, you cannot go. Your mate is pregnant and ready to give birth. She needs you by her side. She needs you to take care of her.”
Matthew stayed quiet for a while. He wanted to argue, but he could see I had already made up my mind. At last, he gave in.
“Alright,” he said slowly. Then he opened his drawer and pulled out a piece of folded paper. “This is the address of the apartment where she stayed.
I checked it once, but maybe you will have better luck.”
I took the paper from him. It felt heavy in my hand, like it carried more than just an address. I folded it and put it in my pocket. “I will go on the first flight tomorrow morning,” I said.
When we finished working, I went back to my room. Ava was there waiting.
She smiled softly at me and helped me take off my clothes. She led me to the bath, and her hands were gentle as she washed me.
The smell of lavender soap filled the room.
As she chatted to me about her day, I wasn’t listening to her, but my thoughts were far away.
I wanted to focus on her, but I couldn’t. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Raven.

I saw her sad face, and I remembered the way she used to smile before everything broke. The guilt was strong. I clenched my fists under the warm water.
Later, when we were in bed, Ava turned to me and asked, “Why didn’t you tell me earlier that you are traveling tomorrow?”
I forced a smile. “It is an emergency. A business trip to California.”
Her eyebrows pulled together. “You always keep things from me.”
“I did not want you to worry,” I lied softly. “I will be back soon.”
“Can I come with you?” she asked, taking me off guard. “No, you can’t come,” I replied immediately how was I going to tell her I was going to look for Reven
She looked at me for a long moment, then sighed. “Alright. Just be careful.”
“Always,” I whispered and kissed her forehead. She rested on my chest and soon fell asleep.
But I did not sleep. I lay awake, staring at the ceiling, waiting for morning to come.
The sound of the alarm woke me. The sky was still dark, only a little light showing through the curtains. I moved slowly so I would not wake Ava. She turned a little but stayed asleep.
I went to the bathroom and took a shower. The cold water made me fully awake. I dressed in a black suit and took the paper with the address. My phone buzzed with reminders, but I ignored them. Nothing else mattered.
When I stepped outside, the driver was waiting. He opened the car door, and I sat down. The road to the airport was quiet. I kept thinking about her. What if I was too late? What if she did not want to be found?
I shook my head. No. I will find her.
At the airport, I checked in quickly and waited. I closed my eyes and whispered, “Let me find her. Please, let me find her.”
The call for boarding came, and I entered the plane. My heart beat fast. Hours went by as the plane flew. I stared at the clouds and thought only of her.
When we landed in California, I felt my chest tighten. My assistant brought a wheelchair as cover. I sat in it, and we left the airport. A car was already waiting for us.
The drive to the address was long. I tapped my fingers against my leg and kept looking out of the window. When the car finally stopped, I got out and walked up to the apartment.
