I sat in my study, my wheelchair pulled close to the large wooden desk that was stacked with files, documents, and reports from every corner of the pack house.
The faint smell of coffee filled the room as I slowly sipped from the steaming mug by my side. My eyes scanned the words on the page in front of me, but my mind was tired, heavy.
The duty of being an Alpha was never simple. It was responsibility upon responsibility, day after day, with no
pause.
Sometimes it felt as though the weight of the entire pack sat on my shoulders. But I was used to carrying heavy burdens; that had always been my role, my life.
And yet, tonight, I felt it sharper than ever.
I leaned back slightly, rubbing my temples as I exhaled. “The duty of an Alpha is exhausting,” I muttered to myself. My voice sounded strange in the quietness of the study.
For the first time in years, the thought of taking a break crossed my mind. Just a short one, enough to breathe, enough to remember what it felt like to live for myself and not just for everyone else. But I quickly shook my head. No, not now. Not until Ava gave birth.
Ava.
The thought of her brought a faint warmth into my chest. She was everything steady in the chaos that was my life. And with the baby’s arrival so close, I knew I couldn’t afford to falter. I had to be strong, no matter how exhausted I felt.
The creak of the study door opening broke me out of my thoughts. My gaze lifted, and there stood Matthew, my Beta, my most trusted friend. His tall frame leaned casually against the doorway, his sharp eyes sweeping over me before he walked in.
“You’re still buried in papers?” Matthew asked, his lips tugging into a faint smirk.
“Pack work I’ve neglected,” I replied simply, my tone clipped.
Matthew raised an eyebrow as he stepped closer, leaning against the edge of the desk. “Neglected? Or ignored because you’ve gotten lazy these days?”
I shot him a sharp look, though there was no true malice behind it. “You wouldn’t last a day cleaning up my mess if I were to ‘get lazy,” I retorted dryly.
Matthew chuckled, shaking his head. “Still sharp–tongued even when you look half–dead with exhaustion. Impressive.”
I was about to snap back with something of my own when the door to the study banged open so suddenly it

rattled the frame.
1 glared instantly, my voice sharp as a whip. “Can’t you knock?”

A maid stood there, her face pale, her hands wringing nervously in front of her. “I’m sorry, Alpha,” she stammered breathlessly. “I didn’t mean to interrupt, but”
Her words faltered as she swallowed hard, fear and urgency laced into every movement.
My patience wore thin. “What is it? Speak!”
Her eyes darted between me and Matthew before she blurted out, “The Luna… she’s in labor!”
Everything inside me stilled. My hand tightened around the armrest of my wheelchair, and my chest constricted. I didn’t wait for her to finish the rest of her sentence.
Without another word, I turned sharply, wheeling myself out of the study. My heart pounded in my chest, my mind racing with only one thought: Ava.
The hallways blurred around me as I pushed my chair faster than I thought possible. It wasn’t easy; every movement reminded me of the weakness in my body, of what I could no longer do as a man, as an Alpha, as a mate. But none of that mattered now.
All that mattered was getting to her.
When I burst into the room, the sight nearly shattered me.
Ava was on the floor, her body curled in pain, her hands clutching her lower abdomen tightly. Sweat beaded across her forehead, and her face was pale yet glowing in that strange, terrifying way only labor could bring.
A cry of pain tore from her lips, and my heart squeezed so painfully I thought it might stop.
“Ava!” Her name ripped out of me as I wheeled forward, desperate but helpless.
I hated it. I hated that I couldn’t bend down and lift her into my arms myself. I hated that this chair held me back from being the man I wanted to be for her. The frustration burned inside me like fire, but I didn’t have time to dwell on it.
I quickly mind–linked one of the guards. “Come here now. I need you in Ava’s room immediately.”
Seconds later, the door opened and a guard rushed in. “Alpha?”
