Sebastian drank another glass of liquor. A sharp sting of pain and irritation gnawed at him. He set the glass down.
"She asked me… If she were the one in danger and I had to exchange Liana for her, would I do it?"
Peter raised his brows in surprise. "That's a deadly question. How did you answer?"
Sebastian remained silent, and Peter's expression turned incredulous. "No way… You didn't answer? Are you serious? You couldn't even lie to her? Not even just to comfort her a little?"
Sebastian lifted his gaze and locked his eyes on Peter. "Why do you assume my answer would be a lie? You think I wouldn't trade for her either?"
"Uh…" Peter let out an awkward chuckle, realizing he had just revealed his true thoughts. The truth was, he genuinely believed Sebastian wouldn't make that trade. Even if he acknowledged that Roxanne might have a small place in Sebastian's heart, it wasn't nearly enough to outweigh Liana's importance.
Sebastian closed his eyes and leaned back against the couch. He rubbed his temples, frustration written all over his face.
"I wanted to tell her I would trade, but I couldn't bring myself to say the words." At that moment, it became painfully clear that he wouldn't trade. He wouldn't give up Liana for Roxanne.
Peter let out a sigh, exasperated. "She already knows that."
Sebastian pressed his fingers against his temples, trying to justify himself. "I wouldn't exchange Liana for her because I know Roxanne can handle herself. But Liana can't. She'd be completely helpless."
Peter shook his head with a knowing look. "That's where you're wrong. Women don't see it that way. Besides, your judgment that she can handle herself is just your perspective. When a woman is facing armed kidnappers, having intelligence and quick thinking isn't enough. Women are naturally physically weaker than men. You assumed she would be able to survive. But what if she couldn't?"
But this? Jumping off a cliff for Roxanne? That was madness.
Sebastian wasn't just some corporate figure. His every move affected the market, the economy. If anything happened to him, the business industry would shake, stock markets would plummet, and the entire structure of Valoria would be thrown into chaos. Bankruptcy and financial ruin would ripple through the city.
His absence alone could bring the city to its knees. And he risked it all—for her?
Leaning back on the couch, Sebastian's face remained eerily calm. He replayed that moment in his mind—when he saw Roxanne jump down from the cliff. His heart had plummeted with her.
Fear, panic, regret… A storm of emotions had crashed over him, drowning him.
