Chapter 101
Edith figured Marcus must have something important to share, so she slid into the backseat beside him.
“To the hospital,” Marcus said, his tone icy.
Kane jumped. “Mr. Larson, are you not feeling well?”
Edith glanced at Marcus, thinking to herself, ‘Is the other personality acting up again? Didn’t he promise to leave me
alone?‘
Marcus wasn’t fooled by her look and said, “You’re hurt. Didn’t you notice?”
Edith blinked. “Me?” Marcus’s gaze dropped to her arm.
Edith was speechless. She pulled up her sleeve, showing him. “See? It’s already scabbed over.” It’s just a surface wound, barely even worth disinfecting.
Kane broke out in a cold sweat. Marcus himself had bite marks on the back of his hand, some even bleeding, but he left
them alone.
Kane thought to himself, ‘Seriously, Ms. Lovett’s scratch is about as bad as a mosquito bite. Is a trip to the hospital necessary for this?
‘I always figured it was only Mr. Larson’s other personality that cared about Ms. Lovett. But turns out the regular Marcus is just the same. Good thing I always treat Ms. Lovett with respect.‘
Kane asked, “So, are we still headed to the hospital?”
“We’re going,” Marcus declared.
“We’re not,” Edith shot back at the same time.
They both spoke in unison. Kane was at a total loss..
Edith said, “I really don’t need to go to the hospital. I’ve got to get back to studying.” She reached for the door handle,
ready to hop out.
But Marcus said, “Senior year’s a big deal. Dating will only distract you from the SATS.”
Edith froze. “Dating?”
Her eyes landed on Marcus’s face. He looked uneasy, jaw tight as he kept his gaze fixed on the window. His hand tightened in his pocket.
He’d overheard Mia’s words. Apparently, Edith had a crush on some guy named Yosef.
Edith was clueless that Marcus was hinting about Yosef. She knew the Larson family was all about status, and Marcus was so attractive that there were many women going for him.”
‘Wait, does this guy actually think I’ve got feelings for him?‘ Edith thought, almost amused. ‘Is he giving me some kind of

preemptive warning just in case?‘
Edith pulled a wry smile. “Really, Mr. Larson, you’re worrying too much. I have zero interest in romance.” With that, she pushed the door open and walked across the street toward her car. The car soon sped away.
Marcus’s voice was cold and flat. “Take me home.”
Marcus’s mood clearly soured. Kane kept his head down and just drove, quiet as a shadow.
Night fell. The car pulled up to the Lovett Manor.
Edith walked into the manor. She immediately heard unfamiliar voices. She spotted a man sitting on the couch. He looked vaguely familiar.
“Edith, just in time,” Karen greeted Edith warmly. “This is Hallie’s aunt’s son. So, he’s your cousin, too.”
The man on the couch stood up and reached out his hand to Edith. “Hey, Edith, I’m Gavin Young. Nice to finally meet you. I brought you a small gift.” He handed her a box wrapped in pink paper.
As soon as Edith heard his name, she remembered where she’d seen him before. In her previous life, he’d used his connection as Karen’s nephew to enter the Lovett Group as the general manager, becoming Hallie’s right–hand man.
In her previous life, Edith had never actually gotten to know Gavin herself. ‘What is Karen plotting this time?‘ Edith
wondered.
Edith played along and opened the gift box. Inside was a pink crystal bracelet. It was about 10 thousand dollars.
If this had been the previous Edith, she’d probably have been swayed by it and decided Gavin was a great guy. But at that moment, she was no longer so easy to impress.
She gave a sweet smile. “This bracelet is gorgeous. I really like it. Thank you, Gavin.”
Hallie was sitting in the living room, too. She let out a/dramatic sigh. “Gavin, you’ve never given me anything this pretty. I’m kinda jealous now.”
Gavin grinned. “Hey, it’s not my fault you’re not as cute as Edith.”
Hallie’s face instantly soured. If she didn’t know Gavin’s real motive, she probably would’ve left in a huff.
But, wanting to keep the plan moving, she stood up sweetly and said, “Mom, Gavin’s our guest. We can’t just let him sit here doing nothing. Let’s go to the kitchen and fix him a little snack.”
Karen nodded with a smile. “Edith, could you keep Gavin company for a bit?” The mother and daughter left, leaving the two young people alone in the room.
Gavin ran a hand through his carefully styled hair, putting on his best gentleman act. “Edith, go ahead and have a seat. Let’s just chat for a while.”
Edith curved her lips into a knowing smile. Karen wasn’t about to drop her scheme just because Henry landed in jail.
‘Is Karen forcing me to marry Gavin just so she can snatch my shares fair and square?‘ Edith thought. ‘Does she think she

Edith glanced over toward the kitchen, where Karen was busy snapping at Dallas. Whatever minor thing Dallas had messed up, Karen jumped at the chance to unload a harsh.

Karen was the mistress of the house. She ruled over every servant with an iron fist, and if she wanted, she could toss Edith and her siblings out at any time.
Edith thought, ‘So, if that’s how it is, can’t I just play her own game right back at her?‘ A sudden idea popped into her
head.
The next morning, being the weekend, three tutors came to tutor Zachary and Joseph as they worked through their assignments. As for Edith, she just breezed out the door, totally at ease.
She caught a ride over to Sunspire High School, wandered the alley near the entrance, then propped herself up against the wall, book in hand, taking it easy before she spotted a familiar face approaching.
“You crazy chick. You actually dared to show up.” Cody glared at her, face full of disbelief.
He yanked out a knife from behind his back. There was something about Edith that seriously gave him the creeps.
He’d originally planned to round up a dozen guys to give her trouble, but no one would’ve thought she’d just walk right up
to him on her own.
Cody raised the knife, but couldn’t stop himself from backing away a few steps. His chest was still aching from her last
kick; if she got him again, he was pretty sure he’d be checking into the ER for real.
Edith gave him a sweet smile. “So, your name’s Cody, huh?”
“Cut the crap!” Cody barked, eyes wide. “You’ve laid me out twice already. We’ve got bad blood now, and one day I’ll have you beg for mercy.”
“But you’re not capable of that right now,” Edith replied. Without hesitation, she went straight for him, reaching out to
grab the knife from his hand.

Edith turned her head. And there was Kelvin again, always popping up where she least expected.
‘Seriously, what’s Kelvin even doing here on a weekend instead of holing up at home?‘ Edith thought, feeling a bit annoyed.
When Edith froze, Cody swung the knife at her. He didn’t dare hit her; swinging for real could actually kill her, and that would be way too much trouble,
His plan was just to make the blade whoosh right by her head and give Edith a real scare, see if she’d still act so bold next
time.
Seeing that, Kelvin panicked. “Watch out!” He lunged forward, shoving Edith out of harm’s way, and ended up taking the knife himself.
