Reborn, She's Back for Revenge novel Chapter 102

Edith couldn’t help but curse out loud. I swear I really want to kick Kelvin through the wall right now, she thought. But she forced herself to hold back.

Instead, she just raised her hand and gave Kelvin a gentle push, sending him stumbling away. Suddenly, the knife was aimed straight at Edith. Kelvin’s heart almost skipped a beat.

Kelvin saw the blade coming for Edith’s face. But instead of dodging, Edith threw herself in front of him, using her own body to shield him from the attack.

The knife reflected in her clear eyes, the flash stabbing right into his vision. And for a second, Kelvin felt something deep in his chest twist unexpectedly.

[Mission failed.] The System chimed in her head.

Edith muttered a curse under her breath. Kelvin playing the hero? Please. He’d just get himself slashed,’ she thought. She didn’t want to be the one blamed for getting Kelvin hurt.

Stay back,Edith snapped. She shot Kelvin a glare. He was really just getting in her way.

Kelvin felt a burn behind his eyes. He knew Edith just didn’t want him to get hurt, but deep down, he really wished he could protect her.

[Host, you have earned the unwavering devotion of a suitor. Reward: One wishgranting charm.]

Edith froze. Wait, what just happened?she thought. Not bothering to spar with Cody any longer, Edith just landed a solid kick on the knife, sending it flying into the alley wall.

Cody was dumbfounded. I can’t take her down even with a knife? Am I really this lame, or is she just crazy strong?he

wondered.

A wishgranting charm suddenly appeared in Edith’s hand. Edith made her wish in her mind. I hope Shaun gets better soon. She knew the more wishgranting charms she collected, the faster Shaun would recover.

Once the wishgranting charm vanished, Edith fixed Cody with a steely look. Coming at people with a weapon and acting all creepy. I guess it’s time for the cops to deal with you.

Creepy? Who the hell did I creep on? Did you actually see me do anything?Cody yelled, bristling with indignation.

Edith just gave him a chilly smirk. If it’s not assault, then it’s robbery. Either way, looks like you’re spending some quality time in lockup,

now

Kelvin nodded. I’ll call the cops right no

No need. I’ll take him in myself,Edith said, cutting him off.

She stayed on guard around that damn System, halfexpecting it to spring some messed up quest on her at that moment. But, thankfully, it kept its mouth shut for once.

Chapter 102

She turned to Kelvin. Don’t follow me anymore. You’re giving me the wrong idea, like you’re crushing on me or something. Guys like you just aren’t my thing. As soon as she said it, Kelvin’s face went paper white.

And in that moment, he knew why his heart had reacted like that before. He was truly falling for Edith.

Kelvin wanted to say something, but nothing seemed right. All he could do was stand frozen, watching as Edith dragged Cody out of the alley by the collar.

Edith hauled Cody to an even more secluded spot on the back hill behind Sunspire High School. Cody couldn’t help but

tremble all over.

She wouldn’t actually hack me to pieces and hide my body on the hill, would she?Cody thought. It’s not like I’ve done anything truly evil, right? I’m the one who keeps getting my butt kicked. My wanting a little revenge is nothing wrong!

Are you single?Edith asked. Her question came out of nowhere, catching Cody totally off guard.

He was instantly over the moon. Just moments ago, he’d been cowering, and at that moment, he could hardly believe his

luck. He straightened his back, hurriedly fixed his hair, and smoothed down his collar.

With a little cough, he said, Well, I mean, sure, a lot of girls chase after me, but I’m single.

Edith gave a sly laugh. You strapped for cash?

Cody had just been floating on a cloud, thinking she was about to throw a love confession his way, but her next words brought him crashing down. What are you trying to do?

9,000 dollars a month. Be my bodyguard.Edith said straightfaced.

What?Cody blurted out, thinking his ears must’ve deceived him.

Cody thought, Is she crazy? Ten of me wouldn’t be enough to take her down. And she wants me as her bodyguard? And the pay? 9,000 bucks a month for a bodyguard? That’s straightup nuts.

Back when he actually had steady work, he did security for just 1,300 dollars a month. Later, he landed a gig as a personal guard at 3,000 dollars.

Then the boss tanked, and he ended up jobless, roaming around with a gang, collecting protection money to get by.

He couldn’t even pull in 9,000 dollars in a whole year. No way this isn’t a trap. When a deal’s this sweet, there’s always a catch, he thought, every instinct on high alert.

Edith just gave him a smile. Officially, you’re my bodyguard. But actually, you’ll be keeping tabs on Karen, my stepmom, for me.

Cody caught on quickly. So, you want me to be your spy? Isn’t that a bit low for this kind of job?

Well, if that’s not enough, I can always find someone else,Edith said. You’ve got a couple of buddies, right? I’m pretty sure at least one of them wouldn’t be able to say no to 9,000 bucks.

If Cody didn’t look somewhat decent, she wouldn’t have considered working with him at all.

Chapter 102

° 9% ?

All right. 9,000 dollars.Cody was over the moon, but he still put on a show of reluctant acceptance. But why should I believe you? What if you’re just playing me? Shouldn’t there be a deposit or something?

Edith reached into her backpack and pulled out a stack of cash. Here’s 3,000 dollars. 1,500 dollars up front as your deposit, and the other 1,500 is for you to pick up a couple of suits and get yourself a proper haircut.

As soon as Cody saw all that cash, he knew this was for real. He counted the money with a big grin, savoring every bill. So, when do I start?

Edith saved his number in her phone and said, I’ll be in touch. With that, she turned and walked away.

She’d planned to take care of Karen and Hallie after the SAT, but since they were so impatient, she decided she might as well make the first move.

The weekend zipped by in a blink. Hallie hadn’t set foot on campus in more than a week, so she was up with the sun, fussing over her look and getting all dolled up.

She was sure she’d cracked the top fifty in the monthly exam scores. Therefore, according to the agreement, she still got to call herself a Sunspire High School student.

Edith had been riding to school solo these past few days, loving how peaceful it was. But again, she was back sharing a car with Hallie, and the blast of Hallie’s perfume was so strong it made Edith want to gag.

Edith couldn’t care less whether Hallie stayed at Sunspire High School. No matter if she left or stuck around, it wasn’t going to do her any favors. Either way, Hallie was just setting herself up for more problems.

As soon as they stepped out of the car, the whispers started flying.

Look, Hallie’s back.

Seriously? How does she even have the guts to show her face here? If I were her, I’d never set foot in this school again.

Her family’s loaded, so she made a deal with the principal. If she cracks the top fifty, she gets to stay. Guess her grades aren’t half bad after all.

She’s just lucky. Someone from the Honors Class had to skip the exam because of family stuff, so she probably snagged the fiftieth spot by default.

She snagged the fiftieth spot by luck, and she still has the guts to show up.

Hallie’s practiced smile nearly faltered. But there was no way she’d turn around and leave. She had to keep up her perfect act, then wipe the floor with all these gossipmongers.

I won’t let a single blernish ruin my life,/Hallie thought. I will stand at the very top, basking in the loudest applause and the brightest spotlight.
