Chapter 104
The sunlight slanted across Kelvin, making his white shirt look even cleaner and fresher. He totally had that cool guy vibe,. and the girls just couldn’t help glancing at him.
Hallie walked up to him. “What did you get on the monthly exam?”
“732,” Kelvin replied, glancing over at the classroom. “Is Edith in the classroom?”
Hallie felt her heart clench all of a sudden. “You’re here to see Edith?”
Kelvin nodded. He owed Edith a thank you for saving him that day in the alley, and he couldn’t let it go unsaid any longer.
Hallie parted her lips, but the words caught in her throat.
She thought to herself, ‘Finally, someone actually wants to talk to me. Kelvin’s so outstanding. If I could just be seen with. him, I wouldn’t have to care about how everyone in Class One looks at me.
‘But Kelvin is actually here for Edith. Why does it have to be like this?”
“Is she not in the classroom?” Kelvin asked.
Hallie forced down her resentment and managed a gentle tone. “There are so many guys around her right now. It’s no surprise you didn’t see her. I’ll go get her.”
As she turned into the classroom, the unwillingness on her lips twisted into a cold sneer. She licked her lips, forcing herself to swallow down all that venom lurking inside.
She walked up to Edith’s desk and tapped on it. Edith looked up, her eyes cool and distant. “Is there something you need?”
‘No way Hallie would ever stoop to join the study group I started,‘ Edith thought.
“Someone’s looking for you outside,” Hallie said, forcing the words out between clenched teeth.
Edith glanced outside and saw Kelvin. ‘Seriously, why does this clingy jerk keep haunting me?‘ she groaned inwardly.
For once, the System was quiet, not popping up with any random new quests. ‘Guess after wringing out every last bit of devotion from that jerk, the System finally ran out of quests about him,‘ she thought.
She responded coolly, “I don’t have time.” Without sparing Hallie another glance, she bent over her desk and went right back to discussing the details of organizing the study group with her classmates.
The girls nearby couldn’t believe their eyes. ‘Wait, that’s Kelvin. He’s literally one of the hottest guys at school, and Edith just totally blew him off?‘ they thought, completely shocked.
Then it hit them that Edith was super tight with Larry, who was even more amazing than Kelvin. ‘With someone like Larry around, who’d even give Kelvin a second glance?‘ the girls thought. They pretty much pretended Kelvin wasn’t even there.
Hallie didn’t even know what she was feeling anymore. Everything she’d so desperately wanted, Edith just tossed aside like it meant nothing. I’m seriously about to lose it,’ she thought. ‘This is just too much.”
Hallie walked outside and said to Kelvin, “My sister Edith is really busy. She can’t come out right now. If you want to leave a message, I can pass it on for you.”
Kelvin shook his head. “That’s all right. I’ll come back later.” He turned away and headed back to his own class.
Hallie stood alone at the entrance of Class One. Inside, her classmates were chatting and laughing, totally caught up in their own world. Outside, students from other classes were whispering and pointing at her.
Hallie felt as if there was nowhere she truly belonged. ‘Why has everything, ended up like this? I wanted Edith to feel cut off at Sunspire High School, but now I’m the one left out and hurting,‘ she thought bitterly.
As she was standing there, wondering where she should go, someone started walking toward her.
It was a student from the Honors Class. He’d missed the monthly exam. When he spotted Hallie, his eyes brightened. “Hallie, you look awfully pale. Are you feeling, all right?”
Hallie was already seething with frustration, and her face twisted in annoyance as she snapped, “And why do you even care?”
She stormed into the classroom and slammed her book onto the desk. She tried to distract herself by flipping it open, but the words just swam in front of her eyes. She just wanted to cry.
But with so many people around watching her every move, she knew if she lost it, they’d have endless reasons to make her the butt of every joke.
While Edith was caught up in the lively group discussion, she took a quick moment to look up and spotted a guy hovering at the door. She recognized he was the one who’d missed the monthly exam.
A faint smile played on Edith’s lips. “Noreen, come outside with me for a minute.”
Noreen hadn’t expected Edith to reach out to her. She’d wanted to rebuild their friendship, but every time she remembered the messes she’d made in the past, she couldn’t bring herself to apologize or reach out.
Since Edith had invited her outside, Noreen instantly assumed it must be for a quick trip to the restroom, something only close friends did together. She nodded, her heart fluttering with hope.
As soon as they got outside, the guy looked like he was about to head off, but Edith stopped him. She walked over and said, “Hey, were you here to see Hallie?”
The guy knew who Edith was. Ever since she transferred to Sunspire High School, she’d been the talk of the school. There was no way anyone could miss her.
“Honestly, I don’t think she’s treating you right.” Edith let out a gentle sigh. “You have a crush on Hallie, you even skipped school just for her, you’ve done so much for her, and she didn’t appreciate it.”
The guy was blushing furiously. “I didn’t…”
“Oh, so Hallie slipped you some cash?” Edith shot back, not mincing words.
The guy’s face went even redder, His family needed the money, and he also wanted to help out Hallie. So, he took 9,000 dollars and skipped school for a whole week.
He couldn’t stand up to Edith’s piercing gaze. Embarrassed and flustered, he just hurried away.
Noreen got it. “So, that’s what happened. Turns out Hallie used her looks and money to bribe him. That’s how she managed to grab 50th place.” She spoke so loudly that everyone around heard her.
Soon, the whole school was in an uproar.
“Hallie cheated.”
“She’s so shameless.”
“She should be kicked out of this school.”
All those angry voices and mocking shouts crashed into Hallie’s ears. She couldn’t believe just a few words from Edith, and the truth came out; then Noreen blabbed it to everyone. And the whole school knew everything about her.
She felt as if she’d been stripped bare in front of everyone, humiliation burning through her. She just couldn’t take it anymore. She grabbed her bag and flew out of the classroom.
Edith’s lips curled into a smile. ‘Seriously? She breaks down over a little bit of gossip?‘ Edith rolled her eyes inwardly. ‘If only she knew the kind of witch hunts I went through in my previous life, those rumors were a hundred times nastier.‘
Noreen pulled a wry face. “Edith, you totally set me up, didn’t you?”
“Guess you’re not as slow as I thought,” Edith said with a smirk. “Try to use your brain next time.”
Noreen stomped her foot. “I’m never talking to you again.” She turned and walked away, secretly hoping Edith would
chase after her or at least call out to her.
Edith had zero interest in running after Noreen. After all the headaches Noreen had given her in the past, using her just this one time honestly felt like Edith was still getting the short end of the stick.
During the last class of the day, Dan announced that there would be a parents‘ meeting tomorrow. It was the last one before the SATS, a kind of pep rally where every student’s parents were required to show up.
Since Hallie had already left early, Dan just called up Karen to let her know about the meeting.
It was the day grades came out at Sunspire High School, so Karen and Vincent had come home early.
When Karen got the call, she beamed. “Vincent, Hallie got first place in her class. She can keep studying at Sunspire High School. We don’t have to worry anymore.”
Vincent was relieved, Honestly, it was the only good thing that had happened to him in ages.
“There’s a parents‘ meeting tomorrow, and I’m the one going,” Karen said with a bright grin. “Hallie’s really made us proud, taking the top spot in her class/
“Every time I show up at school, the teachers can’t stop singing her praises. This is my chance to bask in glory, so don’t even think about stealing it from me.”
Just as she finished, Joseph popped his head over the railing from the stairs. “If Hallie’s having a parents‘ meeting, does
that mean Edith’s having one, too?”
As soon as Joseph said that, Karen’s face darkened. She smoothed her features into a gentle smile. “Hallie and Edith are both part of our family. I’ll handle it myself.” She had no choice but to play the gracious, loving parent.
With all the drama going on between the Lovett and Crawford families lately, Vincent had been coming home less. He was always on business trips, gone for four or five days at a time. They hadn’t really talked in ages.
