Vincent sat on the couch, lost in thought. He’d never once attended a parents‘ meeting for any of his kids. Karen had always handled that. But this time, he wanted to participate in the conference for both his girls.

Just as Vincent was about to speak, Edith wandered in from the hallway.

Most nights, Edith had to finish her evening classes before she could go home. By that time, Vincent was never there. She hardly ever saw him.

She slipped off her shoes and called out, “The parents‘ meeting is tomorrow. If you’re busy, Dad, I can let the teacher know you won’t be there.”

“I’m free,” Vincent replied, nodding. “I’ll be there.”

Karen froze because in recent years, Vincent had never once offered to go to a parents‘ meeting.

Karen thought, ‘Seriously? Vincent changed his mind because of Edith? I must have underestimated how much Vincent cares about Edith.

Karen took a deep breath and forced a smile. “Alright. Then you go to school, and I’ll handle things at the office.” She clenched her fists out of sight.

Hallie had just told Karen that Edith had ranked fourth in her class this time, the biggest improvement in the whole school. At the meeting, Dan would praise Edith, which would make Vincent even more biased.

Karen thought, ‘No way. I’m not letting Vincent show up at that meeting.‘

“Dad, I was thinking maybe I should get a bodyguard,” Edith said softly. “I don’t feel safe walking home alone at night.”

Vincent’s expression immediately tensed. He asked, “Did something happen? Are you in trouble?”

He glanced at Edith, realizing just how beautiful his daughter was becoming.

He thought, ‘School gets out so late every night, and if the teachers run over even a little, the campus empties quickly. Edith has to walk out by herself and cross the street to catch her ride.

‘On her way, she might encounter harassment from teenage boys. Those seventeen or eighteen–year–olds brimming with hormones, who might do something reckless.‘

Karen cursed inwardly, thinking, ‘What a little brat! She already has a driver picking her up and dropping her off every day, and now she wants a bodyguard? Does she think our money grows on trees?‘

But she was the stepmother, and she had to play the part of the gentle, understanding one. It wasn’t her place to say no. So she kept her mouth shut.

Vincent, however, nodded without hesitation. “Edith, I’ll make some calls tonight and get you a bodyguard dedicated to your safety.”

Edith smiled and said, “Dad, I’ve already found the perfect bodyguard. He’ll be coming over in a couple of days.”

“Are you sure he’s trustworthy?” Vincent asked, worried Edith might be too innocent and easily fooled.

“Dad, you’ll see for yourself when he shows up,” Edith said. With that, she slung her backpack over her shoulder and headed upstairs.

Karen frowned and thought, ‘Is Edith trying to put a mole right in our house? The whole Lovett family is under my thumb. A bodyguard could throw a wrench into everything I’d set up.‘

She chose her words carefully. “Isn’t it a bit much for a student to have a bodyguard following her around every day?”

“Doesn’t Hallie have a bodyguard with her all the time?” Vincent shot back, his gaze fixed on Karen. “A bodyguard only costs 3,000 dollars a month. But how much have you sent over to your family through the years?.

“When your family is in trouble, you run around making connections and spend almost 900 thousand dollars. Have I ever said anything about it?”

Hearing that, Karen just felt her heart shatter even more because even Hallie could see

that Vincent didn’t care about her anymore.
