Edith could tell Cody was tempted. It wasn’t Karen he was after, but the money in her hands.
Edith picked Cody for this because he was good–looking and a shameless street punk–someone who’d do anything without a second thought
She thought, ‘If Karen really falls for Cody’s slick words, it would prove she never truly loves Vincent at all. This isn’t about making a foot of Vincent–it is about helping him see people’s true colors.‘
But Edith also had a secret agenda–she wanted Cody to win Karen’s trust, so he could help her look into the car accident that took her mother’s life whe years ago. She suspected Karen had a hand in it, but she couldn’t prove it.
Edith turned and headed upstairs. She pushed open the door to Zachary’s room and found the three boys sprawled out on the big bed, limbs everywhere, already sound asleep.
She tiptoed in, carefully took the game consoles out of their arms, slid them under the bed, and gently made sure the boys were settled comfortably before pulling a light blanket over them.
She set herself an alarm for 5:30 a.m. She had to get up early to send troublemaker Dodo back to the Larson family as soon as possible.
The night wore on, and by the early hours, the darkness began to fade–soft white light crept over the horizon, with pale dawn gradually coloring the sky.
With early summer settling in, sunrise came sooner and sooner each day. Pale morning light streamed in from the balcony as Dodo, lying in the center of the big bed, suddenly shot upright. He glanced around, still half–asleep and not quite sure where he was.
Seeing Zachary and Joseph sound asleep on either side of him, Dodo realized he was in Lovett Manor. He slipped out of bed, eased the door open, and set off to find Edith.
It was 5:20 a.m., and Dallas had just gotten up. Living on the first floor, he’d only just stepped out of his room when he heard something upstairs.
Thinking it was Edith, he glanced up–and there, at the third–floor railing, stood a very real, very much awake grown man.
Dallas thought, ‘Hold up, that’s Mr. Larson. He showed up last night, but didn’t he already leave ages ago? Why is he still here, staying over at the house? And on the third floor, no less?‘:
He turned and saw Cody coming in the front door. He urgently said, “Quick, go wake Mrs. Lovett–I’m going upstairs to check this out.” With that, he dashed upstairs.
Cody barely slept last night–Edith’s words kept running circles in his head. He was up before dawn, and the second he stepped into the main hall, Dallas threw this task at him. That snapped him wide awake in an instant.
He straightened his clothes and made his way to the master bedroom on the second floor. He rapped gently on the door.
As soon as he heard movement inside, Cody lowered his voice and said respectfully, “Mrs. Lovett, it’s Cody.”
He’d heard from the other servants that Karen had been sleeping alone these days. Vincent was always away on business trips, only spending a day of two at home each week.
“It’s not even six yet. What do you want?” Karen snapped, her tone laced with fury.
Cody could feel the anger practically radiating from behind the door. He glanced up at the third floor.
Marcus just stood there while Dallas went on and on–no matter how much Dallas said, Marcus barely responded.
Cody knew Dallas was trying to get Karen to come greet Marcus. Without thinking, Cody pushed the door open and said, “It is…” He stopped mid-
sentence.
There was Karen, reclining on the big, soft bed in a silky, nude–toned nightgown. The smooth fabric clung to her curves, leaving little to the imagination

Chapter 112
Cody felt a hot prickle in his nose–yep, nosebleed.
Seeing this, Karen’s first reaction was disgust–yet, deep down, she felt a surge of satisfaction. After all, it was this body that had secured her place in the Lovett family. Vincent had never truly cared for her, but her body kept him utterly hooked.
E
Ever since she’d given birth to Hallie at twenty–one, Karen had been obsessed with staying in shape. Now, even though she’d just turned forty, she could still pass for thirty–or younger.
Karen sat up in bed, the nightgown’s straps sliding even lower to reveal more of her chest.
Cody’s nose bled like a faucet–he just couldn’t get it to stop. He’d been worrying over Karen’s age last right, but seeing her now, any worries he’d had instantly went out the window.
He thought, ‘Mia’s young, but she’s not even in Karen’s league. Landing Karen? I’d be hitting the jackpot.’
Cody scrambled to tilt his head up, trying to stop the nosebleed, his whole face burning with embarrassment. He stammered, “S–Sorry.”
Karen never shied away from flaunting her figure in front of men. The sight of Cody this flustered filled her with smug satisfaction–she still had the power to make a guy lose his cool. She sauntered over, each step slow and deliberate.
A rich, heady fragrance clung to her, and the closer she got, the more Cody could feel a wave of heat surging through his body.
Karen sneered, “What, never seen a woman before? Try not to bleed all over my room, okay?”
Cody pinched his nose and said, “Mr. Larson is here. You need to see him. I’ll just get out of your way.” With that, he turned and hurried out.
After splashing water on his face, Cody was flat–out annoyed with himself. ‘I’ve been with plenty of girls–none of them older than twenty. With all that experience, how the hell did I still get a nosebleed over some hot older woman?”
He’d figured his looks would reel Karen in, but now she’d seen him make a total fool of himself. Any shot at making her fall for him had just gone up in
smoke.
Karen didn’t spare Cody a second thought. She threw on her coat and stepped out of the room. The moment she looked up, she spotted Marcus and Dallas standing in the third–floor hallway.
Karen thought, ‘Marcus is still in yesterday’s clothes. Did he spend the night here? Did he even share a room with that shameless brat Edith? No way! She quickly strode straight up to the third floor.
Upstairs, Dallas asked respectfully, “What would you like for breakfast, Mr. Larson?”
Dodo stood there, a bit baffled and lost in thought. He thought, “Wait, which one is Didi’s room again? Is it the door on the left or the one on the right? I’ve been here so many times–why can’t I ever remember this?‘
He gave his own head a gentle thump and puffed out his cheeks in frustration.
Seeing this, Dallas was thoroughly creeped out,
Just then, Zachary came bursting out of the room. Standing on his tiptoes, he clapped a hand over Dodo’s mouth and said, “Dallas, he still wants to catch
a few extra winks.”
Saying that, Zachary quickly dragged Dodo back inside and shut the door with a loud bang.
Karen walked right in on the scene. The shock of her face was impossible to hide.
She thought, ‘Did Zachary just clamp a hand over Marcus’s mouth? Where did he get the nerve to pull something like that? Did Marcus actually crash with Zachary last night? Since when did Zachary get chummy with a big shot like Marcus?‘
Karen’s head was spinning with questions, her face cycling through every emotion–anger, disbelief, outright melodrama. Honestly, she was one second away from kicking the door down herself to get to the bottom of it all.
