Dodo was yanked in and pressed down onto a chair.

Zachary said, “Why’d you have to run around? We agreed that only the three of us would know you’re living here. Now the whole Lovett family knows, How are you supposed to explain this to Edith?”

Joseph asked, “Dodo, did I just hear Dallas call you Mr. Larson? Are you from the Larson family?”

He’d heard people address Mr. Larson before–one morning, he’d overheard his parents talking about Marcus. But he felt the Mr. Larson his parents talked about and Dodo seemed like completely different people, so he didn’t dwell on it.

Dodo said, “Maybe Mr. Larson and I just happen to look alike or something. Really, I’m not him. Will Edith be super mad at me for running around and getting caught like this?”

Edith wasn’t mad at all. She could only offer a silent prayer for Marcus. It was bad enough that Marcus had embarrassed himself in front of the three of them–now the whole Lovett family knew he was a total wreck.

Dallas said to Karen, “Mr. Larson didn’t even acknowledge me. He just seemed off. I can’t quite put my finger on it.”

When Edith heard this, she finally breathed easy. She thought, ‘At least Marcus’s secrets are still safe. There’s still a chance to fix this mess.

She stepped out of the room and said, “Mr. Larson and Zachary shared a room last night. They’re probably still asleep. Let’s give them a little more tune

to rest.”

Karen snapped, “Mr. Larson actually spent the night at the Lovett Manor? Something this big and you didn’t think to tell me?” Inside, she was practically fuming, ‘What a perfect chance to cozy up to Mr. Larson–and now it’s totally wasted.’

Edith blinked, looking all innocent. She said, “It was kind of a last–minute decision from Mr. Larson.”

Karen was so frustrated that she couldn’t even speak. She thought, ‘That little brat did it on purpose. She’s deliberately keeping me from getting anywhere near Mr. Larson.‘

But she couldn’t just barge into the room now–if she ticked off Marcus, it just wasn’t worth the risk. With a frustrated huff, she stormed off.

Dallas hurried downstairs to get breakfast started.

Edith pushed open the door to Zachary’s room.

“Didi,” Dodo called out, his voice full of guilt.

Edith closed the door quietly behind her and said, “Zachary, Joseph, you both know who he really is now, don’t you?”

Zachary stared in disbelief. He exclaimed, “Seriously? He’s actually Larry’s uncle–Marcus himself?”

The Lovett family and the Larson family lived in the same neighborhood. Larry often looked out for Zachary, so Zachary was definitely familiar with Marcus’s reputation.

From everything Zachary had heard–plus Larry’s stories–Marcus was supposed to be a cold faced tyrant CEO, the kind who never smiled.

Zachary simply couldn’t connect the Dodo standing in front of him with Marcus–let alone accept that they were actually the same person.

Dodo grumbled, “I’m not Marcus Larson. My name’s Dodo–just Dodo. I’m not a Larson.”

Edith gave his hand a reassuring pat and said, “Alright, you’re Dodo.” Then she glanced at her brothers and whispered, “This is the biggest secret the Larson family has. I trust you both know exactly what that means.”

Honestly, Edith had never wanted Zachary and Joseph to get caught up in Dodo’s real identity–but leave it to Dodo to dig his own grave.

trouble.

If this keeps up, it won’t just be the Lovetts–pretty soon, all of Sunspire would be gossiping that Marcus has split personalities

Zachary had met the real Marcus before, and honestly, next to Dodo, they seemed like two completely different people. He thought, ‘Edith didn’t be This guy is sick.

Zachary nodded in determination and said, “Don’t worry, Edith. I won’t breathe a word to anyone.”

Joseph chimed in, “He’s just Dodo, really. He’s got nothing to do with the Larson family.”

Edith couldn’t help but feel proud of her brothers–these two really got it. She didn’t even need to say it twice.

Edith pulled out her phone and dialed Kane. It had been almost twelve hours since Marcus’s episode last night–they couldn’t afford to wait any longer,

When Kane learned the whole story, he was completely stunned.

Last night, Kane just stepped out to make some coffee, and when he got back, Marcus had vanished from the study. Kane freaked out, thinking the other personality had taken control again–he was sweating bullets.

But the driver insisted Marcus looked totally normal, just seemed to be heading out for some fresh air, so Kane relaxed and went to bed. He was still in bed when Edith’s call came through.

Karen thought, ‘So basically, the normal Mr. Larson last night had actually switched to Dodo, the other personality. Seriously? How did innocent Dodo suddenly learn to fake it? Great. Dodo is getting way too clever to handle.

Kane shot out of bed, grabbed an injection kit and a handful of candy from his drawer, and raced straight for the Lovett Manor.

At the Lovett Manor, Hallie was still dead asleep when Karen dragged her straight out of bed.

Hallie groaned, “Mom, seriously, what’s your problem? It’s barely morning. Can’t I just sleep a little longer?”

Karen said, “Marcus is here. That meddling Edith is all buddy–buddy with him. Quick, get yourself upstairs and see what they’re up to.”

Karen thought, ‘As the lady of the house, I can’t just storm up to the third floor herself–it’d look bad. But Hallie is just a kid; even if Mr. Larson is annoyed, he’d never let it show to a little girl.

‘This way, I can fish for news without wrecking my own reputation.‘

Hearing this, Hallie jolted wide awake. She yanked on a dress, tugged her wig into place, and raced up to the third floor.

Hallie stood outside Zachary’s door and knocked. She called out, “Hey Zachary, it’s me–can I come in or what?”

Inside, all four of them instantly went dead quiet.

Zachary snapped, “Leave me alone, I’m still sleeping”

Hallie reached for the doorknob and said, “Schools about to start, quit snoozing. I’m coming in anyway.”

Thankfully, the door was locked from the inside, so Hallie didn’t manage to get in. But Edith knew there was no way Hallie was going to leave that doorway–she’d camp out there forever if she had to.

Edith pondered, “But if Kane tries sneaking Dodo out through the balcony, the sight of a grown man vanishing will send the Lovetts into a panic, and we’ll have no way to explain it

She said quietly, “Dodo, let’s play a game.”

Dodo asked, “What kind of game?”

“If you can stay silent for an hour, you win. And I’ll grant you one wish,” Edith replied.

Dodo immediately agreed, “Deal!”

He’d already made up his mind about his wish–he wanted Edith to promise she’d never send him away again, that he could always, always stay by

side.

Outside the door, Hallie was fuming. She took a deep breath and called out, “Breakfast’s ready. Zachary, why don’t you take Mr. Larson dentair

eat?”

Just then, the door swung open.

Zachary stepped out, an exasperated look on his face. He snapped, “Do you have to be this annoying so early in the morning?”

Hallie was about to fire back, but as she lifted her gaze, she caught sight of Marcus standing in the room.

She remembered the school gala, when Marcus took the stage for his speech–right then, she knew he was a man so far above her reach it was aiment laughable.

Never in her life had Hallie dared imagine getting close to Marcus–yet somehow, Edith had actually managed to do it. Hallie fumed inwardly, Edith, that scheming witch. How is she worthy of a man with such unparalleled grace and presence?‘

Hallie called out, “Mr. Larson, someone as distinguished as you shouldn’t have to stay in such a tiny room for even a night. Why not come to my room! It’s much nicer, I promise.”
