It was midnight. The servants had all gone to bed, leaving Karen and Hallie alone in the living room. With Karen’s gentle words, Hallie was finally starting to settle down.

Hallie said, “Mom, I can’t just let this slide. I really can’t accept it…”

Karen gently patted Hallie on the back, her voice warm and comforting. “Hallie, honey, I’ll make sure you get the justice you deserve. Go take a nice bath and get some good sleep. I won’t let you suffer for nothing.”

Hallie nodded. “Alright, Mom. I’ll go get some rest.”

Karen sat alone in the living room, her eyes stormy and cold. She’d gone to Lovett Group tonight to help Vincent handle some business, and for a moment, things between them had warmed up.

But the second they got home, all hell broke loose. And just like that, their marriage was back to that icy silence.

Karen thought, ‘My husband actually stood up for Edith that bitch?‘

At first, Karen had planned to let Gavin take his time, slowly stringing Edith along until she fell right into his hands. But now, that plan was out the window.

Karen thought, ‘If that’s not going to work, then I just have to pull out the big guns. I must destroy Edith. Otherwise, Hallie will spend her whole life getting trampled in the dirt.‘

“Mrs. Lovett,” Cody tiptoed over, speaking in a hushed voice. “Ms. Edith Lovett told me to keep an eye on Hallie today, but what she really wanted was for me to do something bad to her.

“But you gave me nine thousand, so I’d never do something like that. I was really just making sure Hallie was safe. Please, don’t blame me for any of this.”

Karen’s eyes went cold. After all, she herself had orchestrated plans to harass Edith before. So of course, she didn’t doubt for a second that Edith could pull those same dirty tricks.

She lifted her gaze toward Cody and said, “You did well tonight. From now on, you’re getting 16 thousand a month.”

Cody’s face glowed with excitement. “Thank you, Madam! I’ll make sure to do even better for you.”

“There’s something important I need you to handle,” Karen said, rubbing her fingers together. “If you pull this off, I’ll drop 60 thousand straight into your account.”

Cody’s eyes gleamed with greed. “Just tell me what to do, Madam.”

“Edith trusts you, so tomorrow night, no matter what excuse you use, you have to get her out to the east–side riverbank,” Karen said with a sly smile.

She continued, “Once she’s there, you’re free to go. Whatever comes next, none of it will touch you.”

Chapter 121

“Understood, Madam.” Cody shuttled out, barely able to contain his excitement. His whole body was practically buzzing as he left.

Karen sneered and thought. What a cheless punk. 60 thousand and he’s completely under my thumb. Edith just gave me a wut that’ll do whatever I say.

As soon as Cody got back to his room, the excitement drained from his face. He pulled out his phone and sent a text to Edith, copying every word Karen had just said.

Edith had already overheard the whole conversation downstairs. A faint, mocking smile tugged at her lips as she deleted the message.

She’d deliberately set Cody up to provoke Karen, knowing it would push her to make a reckless move. And just like that, Karen had fallen right into her trap–ready to act before she even had a chance to think.

Edith thought, “Tomorrow night, huh? Great!’

The sun was rising earlier and earlier now, the air thick with the promise of summer.

Edith went to school with her two brothers, while Hallie, not wanting to be seen and humiliated, stayed home to practice the piano.

Karen, in a surprisingly good mood, took her time with her makeup. She slipped into a sleek black dress that hugged her curves, paired it with some killer heels, and headed out to the beauty salon.

Just as she was about to step outside, her ankle twisted and she nearly took a spill.

Cody popped out of nowhere and caught her by the slender curve of her waist. His palm was burning hot, and for a split second, that heat seemed to rush through Karen’s whole body.

Karen hadn’t done anything intimate with Vincent for ages ever since Edith had come back to Sunspire.

Snapping out of her slip, Karen straightened up in a hurry. When her eyes landed on Cody, she saw his cheeks glowing with a deep blush.

She let out a low laugh. “Don’t tell me you’ve never had a girlfriend before. You’re blushing already?”

“N–No, I haven’t…” Cody lied without a shred of shame. “I mean, I don’t have a car or a house. What girl would want to suffer with me…”

He snuck a glance at Karen as he said, and then couldn’t help but swallow nervously.

He’d always been into young girls–cute and naive, so easy to fool. Almost every girlfriend he’d had was younger than him.

But this was the first time he found himself actually craving a married woman. That mature allure made him want to sink his teeth right in.

Cody was never one of the good guys. He was only helping Edith for the cash, and besides, with her skills, she

wasn’t someone he could afford to mess with.

She reached out and straightened his collar. “You’re in your thirties now. You should dress a little more carefully, or people will start laughing at you.”

She turned and slid into the passenger seat instead of the driver’s. Since the family chauffeurs were busy taking the kids to school, she always drove herself to work.

Cody picked up on the obvious cue and immediately got behind the wheel, buckling himself in.

Karen raised an eyebrow at him. “Aren’t you going to fasten my seatbelt for me?”

As Cody leaned over to help, his eyes couldn’t help but linger on her full chest and the pale skin peeking out. He swallowed hard.

Karen let out a sly, self–assured smile. The way she could still draw the attention of a younger man just proved she was as attractive as ever. She was certain she could win Vincent’s heart back.

Cody’s mind was running wild, and he accidentally let his elbow bump against Karen’s chest.

Karen’s face instantly went cold. Giving him a little taste was just to keep him useful, not for him to get any stupid ideas.

She shot him a frosty glare and snapped, “Focus on driving. I have a meeting in twenty minutes.”

Cody immediately straightened up and drove obediently, not daring to overstep again.

All day long, Karen could hardly get any work done. Her thoughts kept circling back to what she had planned for tonight.

Not until she’d triple–checked every detail and made sure that nothing could possibly go wrong did she finally let herself breathe a little easier.

As dusk settled and the clock ticked past seven, Karen knew in her heart that, by now, Cody should already be at Sunspire High School, waiting for Edith.

“Mrs. Lovett, Mr. Lovett is here,” the assistant reported, stepping inside.

Karen paused, caught off guard for a moment. Since the salon had opened, Vincent had never bothered to drop by, not even once.

She quickly smoothed her clothes and hurried out to greet him. “Vincent, what brings you here?”

Vincent looked at her, his voice calm. “It’s been a while since we went out for dinner together. Are you free tonight?”
