Chapter 132
Edith stopped and looked at the math problem. She had just gone over this question with Zachary not long ago.
In just over a week, he had completely forgotten the solution.
She said coolly, “Zachary, if you don’t like studying, then don’t force yourself.” She went upstairs, closing her door, shutting out everything.
Zachary felt a pang of disappointment. He actually knew how to solve the problem. He had asked her just to have her explain it again so he could pretend to understand with ease. He hadn’t expected her to refuse so decisively.
He truly didn’t enjoy studying, but there were plenty of kids in the world like him. Some things couldn’t be avoided just because one disliked them.
The dream Edith had described left him uneasy. He always felt that if he didn’t study hard, those things might actually come true.
He nudged Joseph beside him. “Don’t sleep here, or you might catch a cold. Go back to your room.”
He packed up his workbook and planned to go back to his room to keep working. With just over half a month until the next monthly exam, he vowed to achieve a good score.
Just as he reached the second floor, Hallie opened her door and stepped out quietly. “Zachary, is there a problem you can’t solve? I can help you.”
Zachary’s face darkened. “No need.”
“Zachary, can’t you see?” Hallie gritted her teeth, her voice barely above a whisper. “Edith is dangerous. She kicked my mom out, and soon it’ll be me, and then you four.
“Although she is your elder sister, you haven’t lived together in the past six years. Back then, you blamed her for your mother’s death, and she won’t easily forgive your accusations and the resentment you directed at her.”
“Shut up.” Zachary’s face darkened with impatience. “Even if we don’t get along, she’s still family, but you’re not. Stay out of it.”
He walked toward the third floor.
Hallie trembled with anger. She looked up and saw a car stop at the gate, with Cody, the bodyguard of the Lovett family, getting out.

Chapter 137
She already knew from Karen that, though Cody appeared to be Edith’s bodyguard, he was actually working for her.
She stood by the railing and called out to Cody, “Hey, come over here.“”
Cody instantly shed his lazy act, stormed up to the second floor, followed Hallie into the bedroom,
and closed the door behind them.
The bedroom had a dreamy decor. Hallie wore loose pajamas, her petite figure faintly outlined
beneath the fabric.
“What are you looking at?” Hallie snapped angrily.
Cody immediately lowered his head. “Nothing. May I ask why you called me up here?”
Hallie said with a stern face, “Edith is barely talking to her brothers these days. Get Joseph out and make him fall into the river or something. It’s best if he dies; if not, make sure he ends up in the hospital for a while.”
The piano competition was just around the corner. If Joseph ended up in the hospital, Edith would inevitably be affected.
Cody was shocked. He wasn’t a saint, but he only ever went after money. He had never considered taking someone’s life.
Karen only intended to ruin Edith’s reputation, yet Hallie was demanding the life of a child outright.
“Mrs. Lovett instructed that we keep a low profile for now,” Cody said, head lowered. “She’s working on moving back. We’ll deal with the rest afterward.”
Hallie said angrily, “Just do as I say. This has nothing to do with Mom.”
“But Mrs. Lovett is the one who pays me, so I have to follow her orders.” Cody looked up, feigning a silly grin. “If you could pay enough, I could do it for you.”
Ever since becoming the Lovett family’s heiress, Hallie never ran out of money. Gritting her teeth, she said, “I’ll give you 3,000 dollars for now, and I-”
“3,000 dollars? That’s way too little,” Cody said, smiling. “Forget it. I’m going to bed.”
“Wait.” Hallie pulled out her phone. “Give me your bank details.”
Not wanting to miss a big opportunity, Cody quickly took out his phone. The next moment, he received a transfer of 16,000 dollars.

He thought, ‘Damn, these rich girls really are loaded. If I play this right, I could get rich in no time.
Hallie said coldly, “Once it’s done, I’ll give you another 16,000 dollars.”
Cody happily put his phone away, feigning sincerity. “Don’t worry. Joseph will definitely fall into the river tomorrow night.”
He stepped out of the bedroom and immediately saw Joseph at the door.
Even though Cody was a grown man in his thirties, he was taken completely by surprise. He patted his chest, still catching his breath. “What are you doing here?”
Joseph had just come downstairs for some water. Rubbing his sleepy eyes, he saw Cody heading into Hallie’s room. Instantly, all drowsiness vanished, and he stood there, waiting.
His eyes flashed with intensity. “What the hell were you talking to Hallie?”
Cody hooked his arm around him, leading him downstairs. In a serious tone, he said, “I know you’ve had an argument with Edith. In the past week, you guys haven’t really talked.”
Joseph frowned. “What does that have to do with what I asked you?”
“You’re family. You can’t keep being so cold to each other,” Cody said, like someone who had been through it all. “My family is complicated, too, so I get it. You know, a sacrificial scheme is the most effective tactic in situations like this.”
“The sacrificial scheme?” Joseph pondered.
Edith had already put on her headphones and gone to sleep, completely unaware of the scheming
about a sacrificial plan happening downstairs.
The next day, Larry indeed took a leave of absence. Edith also heard that May had to take a break from school for health reasons and that she wouldn’t be back for at least half a year.
Edith felt happier than ever. She had changed Larry’s life, and naturally, she could change her own and her four younger brothers!
She practiced piano at noon like always, and Kerrie had her practice again during evening study sessions. Gradually, her piano skills improved a lot, and she played the competition pieces more smoothly.
Before class was even over, she received a message. [Joseph fell into the water by accident and was sent to the hospital. Come here now.]
