She picked up an apple and slowly peeled it, asking, “How did you end up in the water?”

Joseph, wrapped in the blanket, said quietly, “Edith, you don’t like kids who lie, do you?”

Edith paused for a moment and said flatly, “No, I don’t. No one likes children who lie. Have you ever heard the story of Pinocchio?”

Joseph shook his head. “No one ever told me stories when I was a child.”

Edith wanted to argue because after Joseph was just born, Melinda had told him bedtime stories every day. She, as his older sister, had occasionally told h

She said, “Pinocchio was a puppet made by an old man. He needed to go to school like any normal kid, but he hated it.

“Every time, he would skip school to play in the park, the circus, or the amusement park, and then lie and claim that he had spent the day at school. Day after day, his nose grew longer and longer.

“Of course, that’s just a fictional story. In real life, if children tell a few lies, they usually face no real. punishment.”

Joseph lowered his head, mumbling, “Edith, I’m sorry. I lied to you again. I didn’t actually fall into the

river. I asked Cody to help me act out a fake accident.”

He started crying as he spoke. “I don’t hate studying. I’m actually enjoying it more and more. I didn’t fake being sick to skip school; I just wanted you to pay more attention to me.

“Edith, please don’t be mad, okay? This week has been really rough. You can hit me or scold me, but don’t ignore me.”

He wailed, trying to throw himself into Edith’s arms, but afraid of being pushed away, he curled up,

shivering and sobbing pitifully.

Edith hadn’t expected him to admit it. For someone who had schemed all this, admitting his mistake like that took real guts.

It seemed that a week of quiet reflection had helped Joseph grow quite a bit.

Edith decided not to use cold–shoulder tactics anymore. She put down the apple, pulled out a tissue, and wiped away Joseph’s tears. “I owe you’an apology, too. I shouldn’t have ignored you. for over a week. Can you forgive me?”

Joseph wiped his tears and smiled. “Edith, I never blamed you. I’ve been too stubborn. I shouldn’t have asked for your attention when I knew you were busy.

“I’m sorry, I’ll do my best with my studies from now on. And if I break my promise, I won’t ask. anything more of you.”

“Stop talking nonsense.” Edith glared at him. “It’s just a cold. No need for a hospital. Get up. We’re going home.”

Joseph put on his shoes and followed her out.

Edith told him to get in the car. She turned to Cody, who was holding the medicine, and said coldly,

“What exactly happened?”

Seeing her gaze, Cody knew it was over. He said, “Hallie gave me 16,000 dollars last night to push Joseph into the river.

“If I had refused, she would have found someone else, and Joseph would have been in real danger. Therefore, I staged the whole thing myself. Trust me, I would never betray you.”

Edith said unhappily, “Don’t do this again.”

Cody said with a wry smile, “Got it. I know you’re busy, so I don’t want to bother you with trivial matters. Rest assured, I wouldn’t let anyone lay a finger on them.”

Edith knew Cody well–he would always try to make money as much as possible while still obeying her. And she had always turned a blind eye to that.

She asked, “How’s everything going with Karen?”

“She goes to the Lovett Group every day, but Mr. Lovett won’t see her.” Cody paused. “Mrs. Lovett’s salon is being renovated. They say there will be another salon there, and she’s preoccupied with it all

the time.”

Edith sneered. “She forced someone else out. Sooner or later, she will be swallowed up in the same

way.”

No sooner had she spoken than System’s voice abruptly rang out. [New mission.]
