In the living room of the Lovett Manor, Karen stood in a white dress, her face full of pitiful grievance. “Vincent, have you lost your mind with all this work? Today’s the day Hallie’s going to Bonrea for the National Piano Competition.
“I’m her mother. I just came over to help her pack and go with her to Bonrea. Do you think I’m doing this all wrong?” she said, looking hurt.
Vincent pressed his temples, feeling the headache pounding harder. He’d been working overtime for days, getting home at two or three every morning–his brain was complete mush at this point.
He vaguely remembered that Joseph mentioned Edith was heading to Bonrea for the competition, too. Looking up, he noticed Edith standing out on the balcony.
Karen, annoyed, quickly tried to redirect his attention. “Vincent, look, I picked out two dresses for Hallie. Don’t they look nice?”
Vincent glanced at the bulky suitcases–Karen had packed them well. Hallie had her mom fussing over her, while Edith stood all on her own.
‘I’ve known for a while that I’ve been dropping the ball. I can’t let work take over like this again,‘ he
thought.
He headed upstairs, calling out with guilt, “Edith, you’re going to Bonrea too, right? Is your luggage
ready?”
Edith nodded. “Zachary and Joseph already helped me pack. Once Ms. Clark gets here, we’ll head
out.”
“I’ll clear my schedule and go to Bonrea with you,” Vincent said decisively. “Hang on, let me make a few calls in my study.”
Downstairs, Karen’s eyes flew wide in disbelief. She couldn’t believe that Vincent announced he was going to Bonrea. “So, my husband’s squeezing time out of his packed schedule just for that sneaky little brat?
‘We’d barely been living apart for a week, and now Edith has already replaced Hallie as Vincent’s precious daughter, Karen fumed inside. The thought alone was something Karen just couldn’t accept.
Karen held her temper and spoke in a gentle voice, “Edith locked herself in her room all day
yesterday. I wanted to help her pack, but never got the chance. I also booked a hotel room for her last night. Let’s go together.”

Edith replied calmly, “Ms. Clark already took care of the hotel arrangements for me. I’ll just stick with
her.”
Edith looked up at Vincent, trying to be considerate. “I know you’ve got a lot on your plate, Dad. I’ll be in Bonrea for four days. There’s no need to go out of your way!
“I don’t think so,” June said coolly as she walked into the living room. “If Edith doesn’t make it into the top hundred in the preliminaries, she’ll have to head back to Sunspire tomorrow night.”
For Edith, June always acted so high and mighty, strutting around just because she was a piano professor at some university in Bonrea.
Edith didn’t care to deal with June more than she had to and wasn’t about to waste her time explaining anything. But if June wanted to throw shade, Edith was more than willing to make her
uncomfortable.
Edith flashed a sly smile. “June, you’re a piano professor in Bonrea, right? If your niece took first place at the competition, your reputation in the piano world would skyrocket, wouldn’t it?”
June stiffened for a moment, thinking, ‘How did this little brat see right through my deepest intentions? I think she grew up in a poor, remote place. How on earth does she have that kind of insight?‘
“If Hallie wins first place, that’s good news for everyone. But if I win…” Edith gave a sly little smile. “I just hope you won’t try to claim credit for my victory, saying you taught me piano back when I was at
kid.”
June scoffed, half–laughing in annoyance. “If it hadn’t been for your parents, do you think I’d have wasted my time teaching you at all?
“Relax, even if you somehow took first place at the competition, 1 wouldn’t so much as grab a sliver of your spotlight.
June sneered to herself, ‘She struggled for years and only managed to learn simple music. How dare she dream of winning first place at a national competition? Where does she even have such wild ambitions?‘
Karen, starting to sound anxious,/said, “Edith, stop talking nonsense and apologize to June. June’s got plenty of connections in Borrea. She could probably pull some strings to get you past the prelims
“No need,” Vincent cut her off coldly. “Edith’s just entering for the experience. No matter where she places, it’s all solid memories for her. Faking it isn’t worth a damn.”

Edith nodded, “Dad’s right. Cheating’s a stain that can’t be washed off. I want no part of it. But Dad, you really don’t need to come with me.
“Ms. Clark’s already sorted everything, and if you come, it’ll just mess with her plans. Plus, you need to watch over my brothers‘ homework.”
Vincent could see Edith genuinely didn’t want him to come along, and with the boys at home needing him to keep an eye on their studies, he finally relented. “Alright, at least let me drive you to the
airport.”
Before Vincent could finish his words, Dallas came walking in. “Ms. Lovett, Ms. Clark’s here.”
Kerrie entered, her smile warm as she greeted everyone one by one. Hallie quickly piped up, “Good morning, Ms. Clark.”
Still stinging from her run–in with Edith, June was more irritated when she spotted Kerrie. She said coolly, “The slots for the National Piano Competition are extremely coveted.
“Ms. Clark, if you slipped up this time, the school may not trust you with something this crucial ever again.”
Kerrie’s smile stiffened slightly. “Thank you for the reminder, Professor Lovett. But even the best of us can make mistakes. No one knows exactly what’s going to happen.”
“How about I give you and Edith a ride to the airport, Ms. Clark?” Vincent offered, finally breaking the heavy mood hanging over the living room. He reached out to grab Edith’s suitcase.
Edith had packed a ton of stuff the night before, but after thinking, she managed to get rid of something and fit everything into a single medium–sized suitcase.
Once the three of them left, Karen could barely keep her anger from spilling over.
Hallie was in tears, her voice trembling as she sobbed, “I just don’t get it. What did I do wrong? Why does Dad treat me like I don’t exist?”
June gently reassured her, “Sweetie, it’s not that your dad’s ignoring you. You’ve got your mom and me here for you. So, he has to give more attention to Edith.”
With the competition coming up, June hoped Hallie wouldn’t let all this family drama mess with her head.
Karen pushed down her frustration, softening her voice with a smile. “It’s getting late. Let’s hurry to the airport.”

Outside Sunspire Airport, Vincent stood at the entrance and waved to Edith. “Call me right away if you need me, okay? Dad’s got your back. Don’t try to carry everything alone.”
Edith nodded sweetly, being the good daughter. “Okay, Dad.”
After they boarded, Edith and Kerrie took their seats back in coach. Not far ahead, Karen and June were leading Hallie into first class.
Kerrie glanced at Edith, almost out of habit, and relaxed when she saw Edith had her nose buried in her science book, not even glancing that way.
Kerrie had heard the Lovett family gossip before. She didn’t want to judge who was right or wrong, but she was shocked to see that Karen wasn’t even trying to hide how biased she was.
Her stepdaughter was heading to Bonrea, too, and only her real daughter got to fly first class, while Edith didn’t even get a second look. ‘Thank God Edith’s dad isn’t like that,‘ Kerrie thought, ‘otherwise, Edith’s life at home would be totally unbearable for her.”
