The afternoon sunlight was gentle and warm. Golden rays filtered in through the hospital window, casting soft patterns on the floor. Inside the room, Edith and Marcus looked at each other in quiet silence.
Edith bit her lip, said with a gentle voice, “I don’t really have any secrets. It’s just my friend whose ancestors served as imperial physicians, so she knows a few special remedies most people have never heard of and managed to make some lifesaving pills.”
Halfway through her lie, Edith suddenly remembered Marcus had already checked her past; he knew well she had no mysterious friends. Honestly, her only friend was Mia, that wild girl from her rural high school days, and Mia was nowhere near a royal healer’s descendant.
Edith twitched her mouth, feeling that lying was pointless. Then, Edith fished a small box from her pocket and carefully took out a pill. She offered it to Marcus and said, “I’m not sure if this pill really helps, but it’s worth a try.”
Edith put the choice in Marcus’s hands. The pill was tiny, but for some reason, it was comforting. Marcus leaned down and carefully placed the pill on Dwight’s lips.
Edith couldn’t hold back but said, “You’re really not scared this pill is poison? What if I’m actually here to poison Dwight?”
Edith thought, ‘Dwight had a lengthy list of achievements, and goodness knows how many foreign spies and assassins were out to get him. What if I were one of them?‘
Marcus looked right at Edith seriously and said, “I trust you.”
With that, he gently placed the pill in Dwight’s mouth. Less than a minute later, Marcus noticed Dwight’s eyelashes started to flutter.
At the same time, Edith heard a familiar ping in her head.
[Mission complete.]
[A true lady should have at least ten suitors. Since you’re a bit short on that front, you’ve earned a Love Charm.]
Edith couldn’t believe her ears. ‘A Love Charm? Suitors? What do I need suitors for? System, really? I risked my life for this, and all I got is a useless Love Charm? You’ve gotta be kidding me!‘ thought Edith.
Dwight slowly opened his eyes and said with a weak voice, “Marcus…”
Edith couldn’t help but sigh, thinking, ‘Well, I’d risked everything, but at least I managed to save someone’s life. There’s an old saying: saving a life brings countless blessings. Maybe, now that I’d rescued Dwight, luck would finally swing my way!
“You must be Edith, right? I didn’t get a chance to talk to you earlier,” Dwight said, his eyes lighting up as he looked at her. “Marcus’s mom was right; you’re really beautiful. Seeing such a pretty young lady makes me feel better already.”

It wasn’t just his mood that improved; he could feel his strength slowly returning. Dwight wasn’t sure if it was just wishful thinking or not.
Marcus’s eyes were filled with surprise, and he thought, “That tiny pill had worked better than any surgery could have. As long as I know the truth, that’s enough. No one else can ever find out.’
Marcus stepped out into the hallway and called to those waiting outside. “Dad’s awake, come on in and say hello.”
Upon hearing the news, Fiona couldn’t hold back her tears. ‘The doctor had warned that a sudden energy surge meant life’s flame would die for good. The better Dwight seemed right now, the closer the end probably
was.’
Fiona shook her head and quickly wiped her face. She refused to let her old man leave this world with a heavy heart. She wanted to make sure he left with a smile, feeling proud and content, not a single regret left behind.
Fiona wouldn’t let anyone help her. She stepped right into the room and spotted Edith sitting at Dwight’s bedside, the two of them already deep in conversation. Dwight’s spirits were worlds apart from before; even his tired old eyes had a new spark.
Fiona had to dab at her eyes again, then blew her nose and teased, “Dwight, seriously, at your age, you shouldn’t be chatting with a pretty young lady like that. Look at Marcus; he’s about to burst from jealousy.”
She paused, then said, “Hospitals are full of germs. Wouldn’t want our Edith catching anything. Marcus, walk Edith home, will you?”
Marcus nodded and said, “Edith, let’s go.”
Edith was in no hurry to linger; she didn’t want anyone from the Larson family to get suspicious. The two of them quickly slipped out of the hospital room.
When Marcus left, Fiona grinned and said, “Dwight, did you see Edith? She and Marcus are close; give it time, she’ll be our daughter–in–law. Marcus is totally head over heels for her. I’ve never seen him care this much about anyone.”
Dwight’s eyes lit up with excitement, and he couldn’t help but prop himself up a bit. “Are you serious?” asked Dwight.
Bernard stood nearby, his eyes as he watched. Dwight had lain in that hospital bed for over a month, never sitting up. Now seeing him prop himself up, Bernard finally realized what last spark of life people speak of.
Bernard was pushing fifty, but right then, he only felt a deep ache. He stepped back and quietly wiped the corners of his eyes.
Fiona said with a light and cheerful voice, “Edith wouldn’t have come all the way to the hospital to see you if she didn’t care about Marcus.
“We feared Marcus’d be alone, but not now. Edith’s smart, beautiful, and sensible. If she gets into a Bonrea school, she’ll stay with him; we could even throw a big engagement party…”
Fiona wasn’t even sure what she was saying anymore. She just kept talking, pouring out her thoughts, because she was terrified she might never get another chance.

The more Fiona chatted, the stranger things felt. Fiona thought, ‘Dwight’s spirit wasn’t fading at all; he just got livelier. Weird. Isn’t that final energy surge only supposed to last minutes? I’ve talked for half an hour!
Dwight, bedridden moments ago, now sat half–up against the headboard, grinning as he chatted, “That girl’s great. I liked her the second I saw her. When I get out, I’ll ask her for dinner. Wonder if she plays chess; maybe we’ll have a few rounds…”
The two old folks from the Larson family just carried on like that, enjoying their conversation together.
Bernard glanced at the doctor lingering outside, who would announce the bad news; then at Dwight, chatting animatedly with a grin. ‘No way… He doesn’t look dying at all. Is this final energy burst really that magical?‘Bernard wondered.
Bernard was getting too restless to sit still. He slipped out and motioned for the doctor to come inside.
The two doctors standing outside were completely baffled. They hovered, wanting to check on Dwight but daring not to interrupt his possible final goodbyes. They waited in the hall, ready to rush in at the first heartbreaking sobs.
But honestly, with Dwight’s condition, they knew deep down they were just here to declare his death; nothing else they could do. Yet as time passed, no sobs came from the room, only Dwight’s hearty laughter now and then.
It was bizarre; a man supposedly at death’s door definitely couldn’t laugh out loud like that. When Bernard finally came out to call them, the two doctors couldn’t wait to step inside.
Doctors were stunned at the sight of Dwight. As pros, they could tell his case from a dying rally vs a real recovery. Both of them wore serious looks as they hustled over to the machines, eyes glued to every number and blinking graph.
Seeing this, Fiona’s excitement faded away. She went quiet and stepped back from the bed, letting the doctors handle it, her heart pounding with worry.
