The award party gradually came to an end. After Joselyn left, Edith and Kerrie instantly became the center of the party. Harvey hovered beside Edith, introducing her to all the top figures in the piano world. Everyone was enjoying themselves, laughing and chatting away.
Vincent was in a very good mood. He was not part of this circle, so he didn’t try to seek attention. Instead, he observed from a distance.
Looking at Edith, he felt as if he was seeing Melinda from over twenty years ago. Melinda was the one he had loved deeply, the one he had thought he would spend his life with, yet she had left this world in a tragic way.
“Dad,” a crying voice came from behind. Vincent turned his head to look at his other daughter, his expression calm and composed.
After arriving at the party, he had heard from others about what Karen had done. Karen reported Edith for cheating and using backdoor connections, all for the sake of Hallie.
In his heart, both Hallie and Edith were his daughters, but to Karen, within the entire Lovett family, only Hallie was the most important.
Vincent thought, ‘In Karen’s eyes, to pave the way for Hallie, anyone else can be sacrificed.‘
“Dad, I’m so sad,” Hallie said with a sob.
She began to cry, and as usual, she threw herself into Vincent’s arms. Vincent didn’t refuse.
He gently patted Hallie’s back and said softly, “Joselyn said you were too focused on gains and losses, which caused the mistake. Next time, just try harder. Edith got first place this time. Maybe you can ask her for guidance in the future.”
Hallie suddenly broke free from Vincent’s arms and shouted, her voice full of disbelief, “So, you think Edith is better than me?”
Vincent stated plainly, “It’s not just me who thinks Edith is better. All the judges and teachers think the same. Hallie, one must acknowledge one’s own shortcomings to achieve greater progress.”
“No, I don’t want to hear it,” Hallie yelled, slapping her hands over her ears, completely losing it.
What tore her up wasn’t that she lost first place, but that the one who took it was that bitch Edith.
“Hallie, honey, Karen said softly as she walked over. “Why don’t you go get some fresh air? I need to have a few words with your dad.”
Without a word, Hallie turned and ran off. Karen looked at Vincent, and he looked back at her.
Vincent said first, “Is it so hard for you to see Edith shine? She’s under the spotlight, and you just can’t wait to drag her down, can you?”
Karen gritted her teeth and replied, “First place belongs to Hallie. What right does Edith have to steal it from her?”

Vincent shook his head, clearly disappointed. Then he answered, “Even if Edith hadn’t won, Hallie wouldn’t have either. She used to be so innocent and sweet. When did she start filling up with so much jealousy and resentment?”
Vincent thought, ‘What a failure I am. I was powerless to save Melinda, the woman I loved most. Forced by all kinds of pressure, I sent Edith off to the countryside for six whole years.
‘I’d barely been there for my four sons, caught up at work and neglecting their upbringing, and now look at how they’d all turned out.
‘And now, after being raised by Karen, Hallie has changed so much that she hardly seems like a member of the Lovett family anymore.’
“Vincent, I was the one who raised Hallie until she was twelve before she ever set foot back in the Lovett family. You owe her twelve whole years of fatherly love,” Karen spat out, each word sharp with accusation.
“You have to make it up to Hallie. You need to talk to Edith and tell her to bring Hallie along so she can also become Joselyn’s student. I…” she added.
“Karen!” Vincent shouted, his face twisted with anger. “Do you even hear yourself? That’s way out of line. Don’t forget you schemed to get into my bed, so you could get pregnant with Hallie.
“I didn’t know any of that. I already had sons and a daughter. I never needed you to force another daughter on
me.”
Karen’s eyes shimmered with tears as she said, “So you mean Hallie was never wanted. Is that it?”
Vincent said with a scowl, “I’m done arguing about this. I’ve got things to take care of. I’m out of here.”
With that, Vincent swept his sleeve and walked toward Edith, where many piano instructors were gathered. He wanted to treat them to a meal as Edith’s father.
Vincent, being a businessman, easily blended into the scene. Karen watched from afar, her heart filled with growing hatred that consumed her entirely.
She thought, ‘Melinda’s already dead, but now there’s still Edith standing in my way. I should have made sure both that bitch and her daughter got run over!‘
June said, “Let it go. Even if Cedric agrees, Edith won’t. Let Hallie dedicate herself and practice hard for another year. Next year’s piano competition should be easy for her. Winning a year later is still a win. It doesn’t make much difference.”
Karen let out a bitter laugh. She thought, ‘In the end, so many things in life come down to timing.
‘Edith took first place before Hallie, so from now on, no matter who mentions it, they will remember Edith as the winner, while Hallie will be a stepping stone for Edith.
‘It’s like meeting Vincent a step later than Melinda. I can never become Vincent’s true love.
‘After all these years, and still, Vincent’s heart is haunted by that dead woman.

Karen closed her eyes, many strategies flashing through her mind. However, her heart was too chaotic. She had no idea how to turn the tide.
June watched her and shook her head. June thought, ‘Staying level–headed is everything when it comes to learning piano. But Karen’s mindset is shot, and Hallie’s probably falling apart too. There’s no reason for me to waste any more of my time on them.’
June found an excuse to leave first. Karen went searching for Hallie. She stepped out of the party hall and faced a wide main road.
She saw Hallie standing at the edge of the crosswalk, looking lost. The green light hadn’t turned yet, and cars were speeding by. Karen saw her only daughter take a step forward onto the crosswalk.
“Hallie!” Karen shouted, her voice shaking with fear. But Hallie didn’t seem to hear her, continuing straight across the crosswalk. The screech of brakes pierced the night.
Karen dashed forward like a madwoman, pulling Hallie away, but she herself was knocked flying by a van. Hallie seemed to wake up from a deep dream, her mind snapping back to reality.
Hallie didn’t even know what she had been doing. When she came to her senses, she saw the van speeding away, and Karen lying on the crosswalk, covered in blood.
“Mom!” Hallie shouted and dashed forward. Inside the party hall, Vincent was arranging lunch for the next day with a group of people, all from the piano circle. Making more connections could also benefit Edith’s future development.
Edith wasn’t fond of dealing with such social situations. After Joselyn left, she had wanted to leave too, but Kerrie was still surrounded by people, and as her student, she had no choice but to stay and follow along.
The party was finally coming to an end, and people were getting ready to head out. Suddenly, outside the party hall, a series of piercing screeching brakes rang out.
In the chaos, Hallie, covered in blood, rushed through the door, collapsing in tears. “Dad, something terrible happened. Mom was hit by a car. She’s bleeding so badly,” Hallie shouted.
No matter how disappointed Vincent was in Karen, they had been married for six years. He immediately rushed out.
Edith’s eyes darkened, and she followed him outside. Joseph took a step to follow, but Zachary grabbed his collar and sneered, “I bet this is another pity act, trying to make Dad change his mind.”
Having walked around the hall, Zachary knew what disgusting thing Karen had done,
He had seen Vincent argue with Karen, and he thought, ‘Right after the argument, Karen got into an accident. She probably staged the whole thing to make it look like she was about to die.
Joseph offered, “Fine, let’s go see what kind of performance she’s got planned this time.”
