Karen lay on the ground, blood streaming from the back of her head, and both legs were bleeding. When the paramedics lifted her onto the stretcher, her legs went completely limp. Even someone with no medical knowledge could guess that her legs were probably ruined.

Vincent stood there, dazed, staring at the blood on the ground. Memories of that night six years ago surged back. His hands trembled uncontrollably.

Hallie tugged at his arm, urging him toward the ambulance. “Dad, hurry! Get in!” Hallie shouted.

Edith lifted her skirt and got in as well. She had been far too young when her mother passed, and had always blamed herself. She only knew that her mother had died in a car accident, but the exact circumstances were

unclear to her.

Zachary and Joseph also squeezed into the ambulance. The ambulance sirens wailed as it sped toward the nearest hospital.

Once they arrived, Karen rushed straight into the emergency room. Hallie slumped into a chair in the corridor, staring blankly at the floor. Not a single tear would come.

Her mind went completely blank. The noise and the crowd faded away, leaving her locked inside herself.

She thought, ‘If only I hadn’t stood by the road, Mom wouldn’t have been hit by the car trying to save me.

Normally, Hallie would cry at the slightest thing, but now, faced with overwhelming grief, she couldn’t shed a single tear.

Vincent crouched in the corner, head in his hands. Though Karen had been in the accident, his mind replayed Melinda’s years–old crash. That familiar helplessness and self–blame surged back, as if it were happening all over again.

Edith crouched down beside him, wrapping herself up in her dress, as if that made her feel a little safer.

Edith asked softly, “Mom also died in a car accident, didn’t she?”

Vincent looked up at her, his eyes red–rimmed. Then he replied, “It’s all my

fault.”

Edith shook her head and thought, ‘If it had been Vincent’s fault, he should be the one lying there. But with Karen hit by the car, didn’t that mean she was responsible for Mom’s death? Then she would die the same way!

Just then, the attending doctor stepped out, clutching a family consent form. Then the doctor said, “She’s not in danger, but both her legs are shattered. The blood vessels burst. There’s no way to fix them. Amputation is the only option. Family needs to sign.”

Hallie’s face went pale as she darted forward. Then she shouted, “No, you can’t do that. My mom needs her legs. You can’t take them away.”

Hallie grabbed Vincent’s hand, her voice breaking as she cried out, “Dad, how could you decide to amputate Mom’s legs? She can’t accept this. Please, you can’t do this.”

Vincent, exhausted in body and mind, replied, “Do you want to lose your mom?”

Hallie fell silent. Her arms dropped limply, and she slumped powerless into the chair.

Edith furrowed her brows and thought, ‘The Curse Talisman given by the System shouldn’t have gone wrong. My mother died in a car accident back then, so why didn’t Karen die in this accident?‘

Edith looked at the distraught Vincent and slowly asked, “Dad, can I ask what exactly was the fatal injury Mom suffered after her car accident?”

“Edith, I failed your mom,” Vincent said. Then he broke down and hugged Edith tightly, unable to control his emotions any longer.

Vincent suddenly pressed on her shoulders and pushed her away, looking into her clear eyes. Then he asked, “Edith, what do you mean by that?”

“I think this is retribution,” Edith said with a bitter laugh. “Mom’s soul is seeking revenge. I will report and investigate the car accident from six years ago, and I hope you will support me, Dad.”

Vincent’s lips moved, but no words came out. Two car accidents, separated by six years and eerily alike, left him speechless.

Vincent had never believed Karen could be this malicious. But lately, she kept crossing line after line, making him question everything he ever thought he knew about her.
