The hospital smelled sharply of disinfectant. The steady drip of IV fluids echoed clearly in the quiet room.
Karen slowly opened her eyes and heard Vincent talking on the phone. He kept saying Edith over and over. There was no doubt it was Edith he was talking to.
Lying motionless on the hospital bed, Karen fumed. She thought, ‘That scheming bitch Edith dares to ask Vincent for money.‘
Karen knew exactly how much cash the Lovett family still had. At the start of the year, she’d grabbed half their assets to open her beauty salon. Then she’d shelled out a fortune to get Edith into Sunspire High School.
Later, she paid even more to keep Hallie from being expelled. The way the money poured out, it was like water down the drain. Vincent didn’t have 1.6 million dollars lying around.
Selling factory shares to give money to Edith was, for Karen, nothing more than a legal transfer of marital
assets.
Karen’s emotions churned violently. She almost spat out a mouthful of blood from sheer frustration.
Vincent saw that she was awake and got to his feet, his tone emotionless as he said, “The company manage itself without me. Since you’re awake, I have to head back now.”
can’t
Karen stared at him, utterly shocked. Then she said, “I just barely escaped death, and you don’t even want to stay?”
Vincent’s face stayed impassive. He replied, “I’ve arranged for a nurse and paid all your bills. Just focus on resting up. When you’re discharged, I’ll come to Bonrea and pick you up.”
“Don’t you dare leave,” Karen said, reaching out to grab his sleeve. However, she’d just come to after major surgery, so she barely had the strength to speak, let alone hold on to him.
Vincent took a step back, completely unmoved, and turned away without the slightest hesitation.
Hallie stepped into the room, blocking the door, her voice thick with helplessness as she said, “Dad, Mom nearly died. Can’t you stay with her? Even if work is important, is it more important than Mom?”
Vincent’s face grew even colder as a memory hit him. He added, “Every time I went back home to see Edith these past six years, the moment I arrived, your mom would call. She would always say that the company was the top priority.
“And only by running it well could our family live without worries. I suppose she was right. If I don’t keep the business afloat, how am I supposed to pay for her treatments? That is what your mom always believed.”
Karen’s insides ached with rage. The anesthesia from the amputation seemed to have worn off, and her lower body throbbed in excruciating pain. She wished she could faint immediately. She tried to speak, but even her breathing was uneven.
Hallie clenched her fingers tightly and said, “Don’t think I don’t know, Dad. You’re still thinking about Melinda, aren’t you?”

Vincent looked at Hallie and continued, “Hallie, Melinda was your elder. You should show some respect.”
“I would never show a dead woman any respect,” Hallie said deliberately. “Mom needs care and companionship, and I need support. If you walk away now, I’ll pretend from now on that I don’t even have a
father.”
Vincent’s expression darkened. He added, “So, you’re threatening me?”
Hallie shook her head, her voice steady as she said, “No, Dad. I just think that if you can’t be here for your family when it matters, then maybe it’s better you never were.”
Vincent let out a cold chuckle. He left the hospital room without hesitation. Years ago, he married Karen because he didn’t want another daughter to grow up without a father. He had never loved Karen, yet he married her.
He had never imagined that Karen could be a murderer, so he tried his best to play the role of a good husband, striving to maintain the marriage.
But now, Edith told him that Karen’s car accident was retribution. The same accident and the same double- leg crush fractures made it feel like a tragedy predestined by fate. He had married the woman who killed Melinda.
He could not face any of it. Staying here to care for her through the night would have been the most basic act of human conscience. Karen’s life was no longer in danger, so naturally, he would not stay. Then he just left decisively.
Hallie loosened her clenched fingers and smiled faintly. She had grown up without a father. On her twelfth birthday, her mother told her that she had a father.
Then she became Ms. Lovett and lived a life she had never even dared to dream of. These six years had felt like a dream. Now, it was all empty. Six years ago, she had nothing. Six years later, she still had nothing.
“Hallie, come here,” Karen said weakly, forcing herself to suppress the anger and hatred in her heart. Hallie walked over and sat down beside the bed.
“Hallie, I won’t be able to help you anymore. You have to be strong,” Karen said, her voice weak but trying to remain gentle. “Edith is too formidable. I can’t compete with her.
“Now that I’m disabled, how could you possibly stand against her alone? Not to mention, your father’s heart has already shifted. You have no backing.”
Karen knew clearly how Melinda had died. She thought, ‘Melinda’s legs were broken. Now my own legs have been broken. Could this really be retribution?‘
Karen continued, “Hallie, transfer to a school in Bonrea. There’s a whole new life waiting for you there.”
Hallie had been lost and confused until now. Her academic performance had stalled, her piano competitions were a mess, and she had been worrying about how to face the ridicule of classmates and teachers.
Now, Karen’s words lifted the gloom from her mind. Hallie thought, ‘Yes, why not transfer to Bonrea? Why struggle in the small town of Sunspire? Bonrea offers broader horizons, and I’ll have more opportunities
there‘

“As soon as you’re discharged, Mom, I’ll return to Sunspire to handle the transfer paperwork,” Hallie said.
No sooner had Hallie finished speaking than she was called to the office by the attending doctor in charge of the amputation.
The attending doctor said earnestly to her, “You must pay attention to her lying and sitting posture, or her joints could spasm and deform, which will also affect future prosthetic fitting.
“These medicines are for inflammation. Take three times a day with water. This one is for pain, twice a day, and this is…”
The doctor went on with a long list of precautions and handed over a large pile of medicine. Hallie stood in the corridor, her mind buzzing. She could only try to remember everything. She put down the pile of items and had to buy lunch.
The food for patients was different from what she wanted to eat. Squeezing through the crowd, smelling all kinds of aromas, she felt her heart sink into despair.
She had never done anything like this in the past six years. All the Lovett family attendants were in Sunspire. She thought, ‘If only someone were here in Bonrea, she wouldn’t have to struggle so much!
“Hallie,” A voice called out from behind her. She turned around and saw Cody striding toward her. Her face was filled with disbelief.
She had just been wishing that the Lovett family attendants from Sunspire could come to help her, and then Cody appeared. Although he was a bodyguard, he could still act like an attendant, so she finally didn’t have to struggle so much.
“There’s no way I’d let you handle this kind of menial work, Hallie. Leave it to me,” Cody said as he took the meal ticket from her. “You just wait over there. I’ll grab your lunch, and then we can go see your mom together.”
Cody placed his hand gently on her shoulder in a protective gesture and steered her aside.
Usually, Hallie didn’t like being touched by men, but for some reason, the way Cody’s hand settled on her shoulder made her feel safe. Her lonely, uncertain heart finally felt supported. It was like she wasn’t so alone
anymore.
She obediently said, “Okay, I’ll wait for you over there.”
