The hospital cafeteria was crowded. Cody was big and strong, so no one dared to say anything when he cut in
line.
He carried the patient’s meals in one hand and brought over a bowl of chicken soup in the other. He said politely, “You seem to have lost weight. Drink some chicken soup to replenish yourself. Don’t let you collapse before Mrs. Lovett even gets better.”
Hallie felt a twinge in her nose. When no one cared about her, she could hold herself together. But now, hearing someone mention her weight, all the feelings of grievance in her heart were suddenly stirred.
Even her real father had never offered a word of comfort before, and yet this bodyguard she’d never thought much of was showing her genuine concern. A tear slid quietly down her cheek.
Cody was suddenly at a loss, flustered. He quickly moved from his seat across the table and sat right beside Hallie.
He pulled out a tissue and began gently dabbing away her tears. As he did, his hand brushed across her cheek, making it look as though it happened by accident.
He thought, ‘Damn, her skin is so soft, way softer than that old hag Karen’s.
He leered forward, catching a glimpse of the view beneath Hallie’s collar.
Then he thought again, ‘Hallie might not be as mature as Karen, but there’s something about her that’s irresistible in its own way.‘
Cody hadn’t been close to a woman for a long time, and he could hardly restrain himself. He wrapped his arm around Hallie’s shoulders and whispered soothingly, “Hallie, no more tears. Seeing you cry breaks my heart. You’re so beautiful. How can you be crying?”
People were coming and going at the cafeteria, no one paying any attention to a young girl’s tears. This was a hospital, a place where life and death passed by every day. Crying was the most normal thing. Cody openly held Hallie in his arms.
Hallie just broke down, sobbing on Cody’s broad shoulder. Finally, she had someone solid to lean on. She cried out all the bitterness and grief she’d been holding back these past days.
Cody kept whispering all sorts of flattering words, but his hand slowly moved down from Hallie’s shoulder, sliding under her armpit and then cautiously forward. He touched her, and seeing that Hallie didn’t react, he boldly continued.
As Hallie cried, she finally sensed something wrong. It was like a hand had slipped under her clothes. She sprang to her feet.
Cody lowered his head with a look of complete honesty. He said, “I’m sorry. You’re just too charming. I couldn’t resist. Please don’t tell Mrs. Lovett. If she finds out I dared do something like this, she’ll kick me out to Sunspire.”
Hallie clenched her teeth, fighting the urge to slap him right across the face. But if she kicked him out, there

would be nobody left to deal with all the chaotic affairs happening at the hospital.
She said coldly. “Let’s go see my mom.” She walked in front, with Cody following behind her.

Karen had just come out of surgery and could only eat soft foods. The nurse was busy cleaning up and couldn’t help, so Hallie decided she’d feed her mom herself.
Cody quickly took the bowl from her, all eager to help. He offered. “Let me do it, Hallie. You didn’t sleep at all last night. Go back to the hotel and get some rest. I’ve got this covered.”
Hallie was wiped out. She was still wearing the dress she’d worn to the dinner party last night, and it was stained with blood.
She needed to get back to the hotel, take a shower, change clothes, and get some proper rest. As soon as Hallic left, it was just Karen and Cody in the room.
Karen looked at him and asked, “What are you doing here in Bonrea?”
“I came because you’re here. Cody said, his face full of devotion. Wherever you are. I’ll be there. The moment I heard about your accident. I couldn’t focus on anything else.
“I booked a flight and came here overnight. Even if you don’t trust me, it’s fine. I just can’t let you be without someone looking after you.”
After he finished speaking, he blew on the porridge to cool it down and then fed Karen a spoonful.
Karen swallowed the bland porridge, her feelings more tangled than ever.
Her husband of six years had just walked away while she lay here helpless and bedridden.
And yet, the bodyguard she’d always looked down on had rushed over from Sunspire just to take care of her.
She knew this bodyguard had long coveted her beauty and had even snuck a few advances before. Nine thousand dollars could get him to do tasks for her, but there was no way he would come all the way from Sunspire for her otherwise.
She thought, ‘Guess he does like me. There’s no other explanation for why he’d go to such lengths for me!
After finishing feeding Karen a bowl of porridge, Cody finally said, “Mrs. Lovett, there’s something I must tell you. This morning, when I went out, I heard Edith say that the police have opened a case.
“It seems to be about the car accident six years ago. The victim was her mother. Edith thinks there’s something suspicious about the accident and insists the police must investigate thoroughly.”
Karen clenched her fists tightly. She thought, ‘I erased all the evidence back then. The police investigated for six months and found nothing, so the case was closed.
And now, six years later, they’re reopening it? Without any evidence, there’s no way the police would ever restart an old case.
Cody added, “Mrs. Lovett, from what I heard Edith say, there’s evidence suggesting that David from the

Crawford family was responsible. But it seems David is trying to put all the blame on you. What do you think?”
Cody stared at Karen’s face, his hands hidden behind his back as he secretly turned on a recording device.
Karen sneered, “What thoughts could I possibly have? Something that happened six years ago has nothing to do with me. No matter how much they investigate, nothing will point to me.”
Karen thought, ‘Six years ago, the police couldn’t trace anything to David, and I expertly removed myself from the case.
‘Six years later, even if the police could find something on David, I could perfectly pin the blame on Henry’s father. After all, he will go to prison for tax evasion. A few more years won’t matter.
Cody felt a bit disappointed. Karen didn’t expose anything of real value. It seemed he would have to continue dealing with her for a few more days.

The next day in Sunspire, while Edith was in class, a System notification sounded in her mind.
[Mission complete.]
[Host has successfully established her own company. Reward: unparalleled insight for business investments!]
At the same time, she received a message from Kane: [Ms. Lovett, Dithelle Properties has been successfully registered, with an initial capital of three million dollars. Please advise on the next tasks you would like me to handle.]
Edith quickly replied: [There’s a property development in Sunspire’s Eagle District called Winfull Estate. Go over there and check things out for me.]
Once the message was sent, she tucked her phone back into her desk and returned to working on her practice questions.
The monthly test was only a few days away, and the whole class was anxiously buried in their books, getting ready.
This would probably be the last monthly exam before the SAT, so the results would give everyone a pretty good sense of where they stood.
By noon, Edith got ready to go have lunch. Just then, Cathy stopped her and said, “Wait up, don’t leave yet.”
Cathy dashed out of the classroom, and the other students in the room all showed mysterious smiles.
Confused, Edith looked up just as Noreen pushed in a seven- or eight–tiered cake through the classroom door. Cathy held a bouquet of flowers, while the class monitor and deputy monitor carried a banner, followed by the homeroom teacher and other subject teachers.
The homeroom teacher said first, “Let’s congratulate Edith on winning first prize in the National Piano Competition!” Thunderous applause filled the classroom.

Cathy handed her the bouquet, while Noreen gave her a knife. Then Noreen said, “Hurry up, Edith, cut the cake. Let’s spread some of that winner’s luck around. Everyone in our class wants a taste of your good fortune.”
In Bonrea, she hadn’t felt anything when people fawned over her. But now, surrounded by her classmates and their cheers, a soft warmth blossomed inside Edith, touching her heart in a way she hadn’t expected.
She stepped forward to cut the cake, only to have cream smeared on her face. Chaos erupted as forty or fifty students launched a full–blown cake fight. The classroom became a mess, and the homeroom teacher stormed in, furious.
The students ran wild, and the teacher’s temper could do nothing to stop them. An ordinary noon became an extraordinary memory in the minds of many students.
