The final monthly exam arrived as scheduled. Edith had gradually improved from her earlier severe subject imbalances to a more well–rounded performance. Studying worked like that. The more effort one put in, the more it paid off.
This time, Edith achieved first place in Class One and ranked thirty–second in the entire grade.
It’s worth noting that the top fifty spots were usually dominated by students from the Honors Class, yet she had surpassed so many of them to secure thirty–second place.
The other students in Class One also saw significant improvements. The establishment of study groups had greatly alleviated their subject imbalances. Usually, the weakest subject would see the largest score increase.
An improvement of twenty points could push a student several ranks higher. When the report cards were handed out, most of Class One was very pleased.
Rumors about Hallie started spreading around the class, too.
“I heard she transferred to a school in Bonrea.”
“Right before the SAT? There’s only a month left. Are they really gonna let her transfer at a time like this?”
“As long as you have money, there are always those sketchy schools willing to take anyone. And the SAT requirements for Bonrea University are so much lower if you’re local. Honestly, I envy her.”
“Envy her for what? She used to humble–brag about how amazing she was at piano, but Edith, who didn’t even practice every year, ended up playing better than her.”
“Yeah, guess she was just too embarrassed to face us, so she switched schools.”
Hallie’s transfer hadn’t affected Edith in the slightest. With that mother–and–daughter pair gone, she could focus all her energy on studying and starting her business.
With the monthly exam over, the intense studying could be put on hold for a few days, and she needed to quickly earn her first pot of gold. After afternoon classes ended, Edith had no intention of attending evening study sessions.
She packed her books and walked out. Just as she stepped outside the classroom, she ran into Kelvin. She didn’t glance at him and kept walking forward.
“Edith,” Kelvin called out.
Edith’s face flashed with irritation. She asked, “What do you want?”
Kelvin walked over and asked, “What’s up with Hallic? I can’t reach her at all. Why does she suddenly want to
transfer to Bonrea?”
A sneer appeared on Edith’s face. She scoffed, “You’re asking me? How should I know?”

“Aren’t you her sister?” Kelvin said. “You came back from Bonrea, but she didn’t. So where is she?”
Edith curled her lips coldly and walked on. There was nothing to say to someone like him. Kelvin followed a few steps behind.
He hadn’t talked to Edith in a long time, and mentioning Hallie was just a pretext to start a conversation, but Edith seemed even less pleased.
He quickened his pace and said, “I heard you started a company. Something to do with real estate, right?”
Edith froze in her tracks and asked, “You’ve been investigating me?”
“I didn’t,” Kelvin denied and added. “I have an uncle who works at the Bureau of Commerce. A few days ago, a girl under eighteen registered a company and became the legal representative of a firm with assets of three million dollars.
“My uncle thought it was inspiring and mentioned it to me during a family dinner. Your name was easy to remember, so he told me. I guessed it must be you.”
Judging by the way he said it, Edith thought he wasn’t lying, so Edith’s expression softened slightly.
“Edith, my mother has a relative also in real estate. Why don’t we cooperate?” Kelvin continued. “My father always wants me to gain experience. I can apply for some funding to co–found a company with you.”
“Don’t bother,” Edith said flatly, cutting him off. She was about to walk away.
But then she stopped, glared at Kelvin, and said each word deliberately, “Don’t ever talk to me again. Just hearing you speak annoys me. It’s so annoying.”
Kelvin felt like he’d been struck by lightning. He opened his mouth to say something, but the thought that Edith found his voice annoying stopped him. He didn’t say another word.
And just like that, he watched Edith disappear at the entrance of the teaching building. His heart felt a sour, aching sadness. A first love that had never even started now felt as if it had ended before it could begin.
Meanwhile, Edith walked out of school, and Kane’s car was waiting for her. He respectfully opened the back door and asked, “Ms. Lovett, where to?”
“Winfull Estate,” she replied.
Kane paused for a moment. He was a top–notch assistant. Ever since Marcus decided to partner up with Edith to launch a company, Kane had already done a thorough rundown of Sunspire’s real estate industry.
Sunspire wasn’t a major city, and the real estate boom was still pretty new. A few companies were starting to get noticed, but none had taken off yet. The whole market was still pretty messy.
He had taken a look at Winfull Estate yesterday. It was huge. At first, it was meant to be a luxury community, but halfway through, the money ran dry, and the whole place was downgraded to a basic, generic neighborhood.
When the developers tried to launch phase two, they couldn’t gather a cent. That section ended up as an
