As night fell, Edith and her two brothers went upstairs together. She checked their assignments one by one.

Joseph was still in elementary school, so he didn’t have much homework. He had started working on Olympiad math problems, but just the easiest ones for now.

Zachary had made a lot of progress too. His performance in science showed marked improvement, but the most impressive gains were in literature, math, and Engloriawhere he now consistently scored above

average.

Edith went over Zachary’s mistakes with him, then returned to her own room to work on practice problems.

Even though she hadn’t figured out yet which college she wanted or what major to choose, that didn’t stop her from throwing herself into SAT preparation. The higher her score, the more paths would open up for her.

Her phone suddenly buzzed on the desk. She glanced over and saw an unknown number light up on the

screen.

With everything going on with her startup lately, she assumed it was about business. But the moment she picked up, Hallie was already yelling on the other end.

Edith couldn’t help but find it a little ridiculousshe and Hallie were halfsisters, had lived under the same roof for years, and yet they’d never even called each other once.

Edith, you heartless bitch! My mom lost her legs, and we were thrown out of the family. Now you’re the only heiress left. Can’t you leave us alone? Why do you still have to ruin our lives?Hallie screamed.

Edith gave a chilly laugh. And what exactly does your mom losing her legs have to do with me? She got divorced because she cheated. How is that my fault? Hallie, quit flinging wild accusations around.

If you hadn’t stolen first place from me, my mom would never have ended up in that accident. If you hadn’t brought Cody over to the Lovett family, none of this would have happened.Hallie’s voice trembled with bitterness.

And Pearson, she continued, you sent him, didn’t you? Listen, drop the charges and get the police to release my mom. Otherwise, I swear I’ll come for you, whatever it takes.

Edith’s brow knitted. She casually checked the latest headlines from Sunspire on her phone.

Sure enough, there was a story about Karen: [Disabled woman detained in Sunspire for burglary. The stolen amount was close to 6 million dollars, and she might be looking at life behind bars.]

Edith let out a cold laugh. Your mother caused my mother’s death, and all she gets is life behind bars? At least she’s still breathingmaybe you should count yourself lucky. If she were free, she’d probably just get herself killed in a car accident anyway.

No one would always be there to see her and call an ambulance in time,Edith thought coldly.

She hung up, letting her thoughts churn.

Karen might’ve been selfish and vicious, but breaking into someone’s house for a heist wasn’t something she’d do. Something about this whole thing didn’t add up.

Who was really behind all this?Edith wondered, and a certain familiar face flashed through her mind.

She shook her head, forcing that familiar face out of her mind, and then let herself settle back into her practice problems.

Meanwhile, Hallie stood outside the police station, her face buried in her hands as she sobbed. She pleaded desperately with the officers to let her mother go, but no one paid her the slightest bit of attention.

She tried reaching out to lawyers to take her mother’s case, but the moment Karen’s name came up, they’d immediately hang upnobody wanted anything to do with her.

Edith thought bitterly, It must be Edith. She’s the one pulling all the strings.

She’s connected to so many big shots in Bonrea. If even a single one of those people shows up in Sunspire, we won’t stand a chance of surviving.

What do I do now?

She drifted through the streets, summer’s cool night air brushing past her, but all she felt was a bonedeep chill.

She didn’t know where her feet were taking her, and before she knew it, she found herself in the liveliest part of Sunspire. The streets teemed with people, but no matter how crowded it was, she couldn’t find a single person to rely on.

She looked around in a daze and suddenly spotted a car parked right in front of a restaurant across the street. She recognized it instantlyit was a car she couldn’t possibly mistake.

It was her father’s car. She’d ridden in it so many times when going over to the Lovett Group’s building.

That’s it. I’ll just ask Dad for help,Hallie thought, a glimmer of hope breaking through her despair. Even if they are talking about divorce, they aren’t really separated yet. Dad wouldn’t just leave me out in the cold.

Hallie was about to run over, but just then, another car pulled up.

Vincent hurried over, respectfully opened the car’s back door, and ushered out a man who looked to be in his early thirties.

He was a tall man in a perfectly tailored suit, with sharp, defined features and a natural air of authorityas if he’d been born to lead.

Hallie instantly froze. She recognized himit was Jonathan Quinn, the business tycoon who’d made the annual rich list. She remembered hearing that a super famous actress had married him.

That actress was already incredibly wealthy in her own right, yet she left her career behind to marry into the Quinn family and start a family. That alone proved just how loaded and powerful the Quinn family really

was.

But she knew it wasn’t the time to worry about it nowshe had to get Vincent to help bail her mother out quickly. Without thinking, Hallie hit call.

Vincent took one look at the incoming call and ended it without hesitation.

He was certain about what Hallie would say, but his mind was made up about this divorce, and nothing could change it now.

Divorced or not, Hallie would always be his daughter. If she wanted to stay with the Lovett family, he’d welcome her; but if she chose to go with Karen, he wouldn’t stand in her way.

Vincent slipped his phone back into his pocket, giving a courteous smile. Mr. Quinn, this way please. Everything’s ready for you.”

The two of them disappeared inside the restaurant.

Hallie felt as if the world had dropped out from under her. Vincent had never hung up on her before, and this was unacceptable.

She saw clearly that her father ended her call and then turned and greeted his VIP guest with a beaming smile, like nothing had happened.

Mom’s still in jail, and she’s lost her legs. We’ve hit rock bottom, but Dad is just out here doing business, acting like nothing’s wrong,Hallie thought bitterly.

Her eyes felt dry, like she was already past tears. She wondered if that was what it felt like when all hope for someone was lost.

Hallie slipped her phone back into her pocket and stood quietly beneath a big tree across from the restaurant. She wasn’t even sure what she was hoping for anymore.

After what felt like forever, Hallie finally saw Vincent walk out of the restaurant by himself, phone pressed to his ear as he strolled along.

What about the kids? Are they all asleep?Vincent talked to Dallas over the phone. Edith’s still up doing her homework? Alright, warm up some milk for her and bring it to her roommake sure she goes to bed early.

I’ve got a few things to handle here with a client, so I’ll head back later, Just have some pasta ready for me.

After finishing with his client, her father hadn’t called her back firstinstead, he’d called home to check on Edith. This sight made Hallie’s lips curl in a bitter sneer.

There’s nothing left to hope for. Starting today, from this very moment, I don’t have a father anymore,Hallie told herself, her heart sinking.

Hallie stared as her father’s car slipped out of sight, but she made no move to leave. She just stayed put, still clinging to another hope.

After waiting for a long time, she finally saw Jonathan step out of the restaurant, trailed by a driver and

someone who looked like an assistant.

The assistant respectfully opened the rear door of the car, and Jonathan bent down and slid inside.

Hallie bit her lip, desperate thoughts swirling. Making up her mind, she hurried around and, just as the car started to move, thing herself right in front of it.

The driver slammed on the brakes. Mr. Quinn, I think we just hit someone,” he said.

The assistant frowned. Are we getting hit with one of those fake accident scams right now?

Hallie scrambled up from the ground, spotting blood on her hands from somewhere she didn’t notice. She smeared it across her face without thinking,

Tiny beads of blood dotted her delicate face, creating a strange, striking, kind of beauty,

Jonathan glanced out from the back seat, a faint smile tugging at his lips. Let her in. Take her to the hospital and get her checked out.
