Chapter 48
The Lovett family’s party ended amid an uproar from the crowd. The party hall was deserted, but the lounge in the back was packed with people.
Isabella had fainted and still hadn’t come to. Karen immediately sent someone to rush her to the hospital. She had to calm Noreen down first; only then could she give the Reed family an explanation. Otherwise, the relationship between the two families would be doomed.
Noreen was curled up on the sofa, holding a cup of hot coffee.
“Noreen, it’s okay now,” Hallie said softly. “I’m here with you. No one’s going to mess with you anymore.”

Meanwhile, June spoke up slowly, “What exactly happened here?”
“What do you think happened?” Mandy was furious. “That good–for–nothing, Henry, is just a freeloader. He’s always coming to the Lovett family for handouts, and now he dares to pull this kind of stunt at our party.
“Karen, you need to cut ties with the Crawford family immediately. We can’t let them drag us down.” Mandy was absolutely livid.
After the Lovett family struck it rich, they bought her a house out in the suburbs. She lived there by herself, enjoying the good life. The neighbors all knew her sons were successful, so they were always buttering her up and treating her like royalty.
She had gotten used to all that flattery, so when she came into the city for the party today, she fully expected to be the center of attention. She couldn’t guess she’d end up as the laughingstock instead.
If it had just been the Lovett family embarrassing themselves, she might have swallowed it. But to be dragged down by Karen’s family? That was just too much to bear.
Mandy always looked down on Karen, finding her far inferior to Melinda. She also disliked Melinda for being too aloof, making Mandy feel her son Vincent was marrying up, which gave her a sense of inferiority.
Karen took a deep breath and said, “Mom, there’s got to be some kind of misunderstanding here.”
Just as Karen finished speaking, someone appeared at the entrance of the lounge. It was Edith.
She was just a girl, not even eighteen yet, and she wasn’t wearing a formal dress or any makeup. Still, the moment she walked in, she drew every eye in the room.
“It’s you.” Noreen sprang off the sofa. “Edith, you did this to me. You bitch; you ruined my reputation. I’m not letting you off–I’ll tear you apart.”
Karen’s eyes flashed. If the Reed family pinned all this on Edith, then all her plotting would finally pay off.
She put on an act, stepping in to hold Noreen back, and asked gently, “Noreen, what exactly happened? Just tell us. We will make sure you get justice.“/
Noreen yelled, “This purple dress. Edith made me wear it on purpose. She lied to me.”
‘Edith pretended to help me with the dark green dress, but insisted on the purple one instead. I couldn’t resist and eventually fainted. I didn’t know why I couldn’t fight back, she thought.
Noreen suddenly put it all together. “And that glass of water–you brought it to me on purpose, didn’t you? You made me drink it. Edith, you’re vicious. Why would you do this to me?”
Edith wore a look of utter nonchalance. She walked over to the sofa, pulled out a chair, and sat down. Her aura seemed to fill the room, and the whole lounge went quiet.
Edith’s eyes glinted with a cold light, her crimson lips parting slowly. “Ms. Reed, didn’t you forget that you poured that glass of water and left it on the table yourself? You should be grateful that you only put half of powder into it.”
If Noreen had dumped the whole packet, she wouldn’t have woken up halfway through, let alone kicked Henry from the Crawford family off her.
Because she fought back, everyone would know she was forced into this, not that she wanted it. She was the victim here. People might
still gossip, but at least no one will dare humiliate her in public.
Noreen’s mouth dropped open in disbelief. She thought she’d been sneaky, slipping the powder into the water when no one was looking, but Edith actually knew she’d only poured in half.
“And another thing,” Edith said coolly, “that purple dress? Karen picked it out. So, tell me, what’s that got to do with me?”
Noreen wasn’t dumb. She caught on quickly. She suddenly turned and shoved Hallie away.
Jabbing a finger right at Hallie’s nose, Noreen yelled, “Hallie, you actually lied to me. You wanted to set Edith up–what’s that got to do with me? Why would you drag me into this? How could you do this to me? I…
The powder wasn’t a laxative; it was a sedative. The dress wasn’t just tight; it was laced with the drug. Noreen realized she had been used as a pawn by Karen and Hallie and had fallen into their trap.
“Noreen,” Karen said coldly, her tone sharp as ice. “You’re clearly still affected by the drug. Your mind isn’t clear right now. I’ll have someone take you to the hospital.”
“What the hell is going on here?” Vincent had just finished seeing off the last of the guests and walked in, his face dark with anger. “Karen, you’d better explain yourself right now.”
Karen opened her mouth, lips moving as if to speak, but for once, she truly had nothing to say.
She thought she had every detail under control, but never expected things to blow up like this. Now, she couldn’t even think of a single excuse to smooth things over.
“Hallie, do you think we’re blind?” Mandy snapped. “Everyone saw Henry force Noreen. That excuse won’t work on the Reed family. We should tie up Henry and send him to the Reed Residence to deal with, not let him drag us down!”
Karen clenched her teeth. ‘Does Mandy really have it out for my side of the family? Is she really that desperate for Henry to get dragged into trouble?‘ she thought bitterly.
She spoke slowly, forcing herself to stay calm. “There must be something between Noreen and Henry. Otherwise, this never would’ve happened. Let me talk to Isabella. Maybe we can turn this disaster into something good.”
June, who had been standing off to the side, couldn’t help but smirk. ‘Karen really is a schemer. Since she couldn’t take down Edith, she’s now set her sights on Noreen instead.
The Crawfords, those no–account people, have only been in Sunspire for six years and now dare to pursue Noreen. With her reputation ruined, she might actually end up marrying into the Crawford family, June thought.
June suddenly said something that felt totally out of place. “Hallie, you still haven’t turned in your reflection essay for today. Hurry back and get it done.”
She thought to herself, “This kind of dirty mess wasn’t something a future piano star should get her hands dirty with. She’d been putting all her effort into training Hallie, hoping she would take home a prize at the national piano competition.
If Hallie could snag first place, June’s name as a piano teacher would finally spread throughout the Bonrea, and her own standing would rise with the tide.
Mandy nodded. “Hallie, have the driver take you home first. The piano is what matters most right now.”
The whole Lovett family knew Hallie was getting ready for the competition. Mandy, who cared deeply about appearances, couldn’t wait for Hallie to bring home a trophy, just so she could brag about it to all the relatives and neighbors.
Hallie obediently left the hotel. Vincent and Karen needed to handle the aftermath and drove to the hospital. Edith put on a baseball cap, hailed a taxi, and followed them.
As soon as the Lovett family left, two men in tailored suits strode in through the hotel’s main entrance, their presence instantly drawing
