Chapter 79
Edith stopped at the door to Zachary’s room. “Marcus is inside, but he hasn’t recovered yet. I doubt he’ll leave with you.”
Larry swallowed the last bite of his bread and checked the time. “Uncle Marcus can’t stay in the other personality for more than twelve hours, or it i damage his brain. I brought the medicine.”
He pulled a syringe and vial from his backpack. “But Uncle Marcus doesn’t really listen to me. I might need your help with this, Edith,”
Edith pressed her lips together and asked, “Will his illness put his life in danger?” She wondered if Marcus might die young because of his split personality.
“It won’t take his life, but it could leave Uncle Marcus stuck at five years old forever,” Larry admitted, “Whenever his other personality comes out, he’s always five, and he can be really destructive. Sometimes he even hurts himself.”
Edith got it. The longer this other personality stays in control, the higher the risk. No wonder Larry was so anxious. She knocked on the door.
Dodo jumped up and darted over to pull it open. He was still holding his slingshot, looking super proud. “Edith, did you see how awesome I was?! chased the bad guys off!”
Larry was left speechless. ‘Is this man in a pink nightgown really my refined, elegant Uncle Marcus?‘ He honestly wished he could unsee this.
“Hey, Edith, this has nothing to do with me!” Zachary immediately tried to dodge responsibility. “Dodo said the dress was super pretty, and once he put it on, he just refused to take it off.”
Joseph shot his hand up. “I swear, Zachary’s telling the truth!”
Dodo had no idea they were setting him up. He nodded hard. “Edith’s dress really is super pretty. I love it!”
Edith and Larry were equally speechless.
“Zachary, Joseph, go downstairs for breakfast and get ready for school,” Edith`said, covering her face. “And whatever happened with Dodo here. Don’t tell anyone else about it.”
Joseph nodded obediently. “Got it, Edith!”
Zachary paused, a sly grin tugging at his lips. “With a secret this juicy, shouldn’t I get a little hush money or something?”
He’d spent the whole night on high alert, keeping an eye on Marcus, terrified he’d sneak into Edith’s room. ‘After all that effort, it’s only fair I get a little reward, Zachary thought.
Edith shot him a look. “What are you after?”
“Cut me some slack and let me have the night off,” Zachary said, jumping at the chance. “My classmate’s little sister is having a birthday party tonight, and she asked me to go out to a bar with her.”
“And what does your classmate’s little sister’s birthday have to do with you?” Edith shot back, clearly unimpressed. “Obviously, you don’t have enough homework. Tonight, you’re doing an extra worksheet.”
Zachary protested, “My classmate’s little sister helped me with six subjects‘ worth of homework yesterday. What’s so wrong with me showing up at her birthday party to return the favor? Edith, can’t you cut me some slack for once?”
Just thinking about how Zachary had wasted his previous life lost in the arms of women, living in a haze of pleasure, made Edith’s temper flare. ‘He’s barely a teenager, and he’s already planning to hit up a bar,‘ she fumed.
She grabbed a stick from the side and swung it at Zachary’s calf. “You’ve got two months until your exams. If I catch you messing around outside again, I’ll break your legs!”

Chapter 79
Zachary jumped back, dodging all over the place. “Fine, I won’t go. Why are you hitting me? Edith, cut it out
“Edith, I’ll help you hold him downl” Dodo shouted, clearly enjoying the chaos. He grabbed Zachary’s shoulders, pinning him in place
Even though he claimed to be only five, Dodo had the strength of a grown man. The moment he made his move, Zachary was instantly immobilized
Zachary was furious. “You little traitor, Dodo. Yesterday you acted all close with me, and now you’re teaming up with Edith to beat nie up? Just wait unt I get my hands on you!”
Larry was lost for words. ‘How absurd!‘ he thought, feeling utterly helpless. ‘Seriously, how is Uncle Marcus supposed to face the Lovett family after this?
Zachary was dodging and jumping all over the place, finally crying uncle. “Okay, okay. I was wrong. I won’t go to the bar, just stop hitting me already.
Edith hadn’t actually hit him. She tossed the stick aside and said lightly, “Go downstairs for breakfast. Get to school early, and don’t be late.
Zachary left, rubbing his sore butt.
Joseph was grinning from ear to ear. “Zachary, you actually dared to bargain with Edith? You’re my idol.”
“Hmph, she’s just a paper tiger!” Zachary snorted, and then lowered his voice. “I’m not coming home tonight. Let’s see what she can really do to me.”
Joseph raised both hands and feet in support. “Go, Zachary. Stand–your ground.”
The more Zachary acted out, the more Edith’s attention was glued to him, which meant Joseph could just kick back and relax.
“Don’t worry, Zachary. You’ve got dirt on Edith anyway. She wouldn’t dare actually do anything to you,” Joseph said.
Zachary shot Joseph a glare. “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re scheming, kid. Keep dreaming.”
The two of them kept bickering as they made their way downstairs.
Edith led Dodo back to her room, with Larry trailing behind.
“Edith, I missed you so much last night,” Dodo cooed, holding onto her pinky finger in that soft, whiny voice of his. “Can I sleep with you tonight?! promise I’ll be really good.”
Larry just looked down, pretending he hadn’t seen any of that. As Marcus’s nephew, he had to let Marcus save some face. Otherwise, Marcus might just refuse to stay with them anymore.
He turned around, pulled out the syringe, and quietly filled it with the medicine.
Edith took Dodo’s hand and coaxed him gently, “You’re a boy, so you should sleep with the other boys. Why do you want to sleep with me instead? Come on, have a seat.”
Dodo didn’t really know what she wanted, but he obediently sat down anyway.
Larry moved in slowly with the syringe.
Dodo was quick to notice. He suddenly turned his head and saw the needle in Larry’s hand aimed right at his neck. His eyes went wide with terror. Every time he got this shot, he would be trapped in endless darkness and loneliness.
“No. I don’t want it!” Dodo struggled desperately fighting back with all his might. “Edith, he’s the bad guy. Help me.”
Edith held down his struggling arms and coaxed him softly, “Dodo, it won’t hurt at all. It’ll be over before you know it.”
Dodo burst into tears. “Edith, please, don’t let them give me the shot. If you do, I’ll never get to see you again. Please save me, Edith!”
Edith couldn’t stand to see him cry. She turned her head away, but kept a tight hold on his shoulders. She was so strong that Dodo was completely pinned down and couldn’t budge.
Chapter 79
Larry took the opportunity to slip the needle into Dodo’s neck. Dodo’s eyelids quietly closed, his tears still hanging on his cheeks,
Edith gently laid him on the bed and softly wiped away his tears with her hand.
On the third–floor balcony, Kane jumped in with two bodyguards. “Thanks for looking after him, Edith. I’ll take him back now,” Kane said,
The bodyguards carefully lifted Marcus and carried him out through the balcony.
Thinking about the tears in Marcus’s eyes before he lost consciousness, Edith felt oddly unsettled. She forced herself to ignore it and said softly, “It’s getting late. Let’s get to school.”

Now that Larry had given Marcus an injection for the first time and the big problem was solved, he felt much more at ease. He immediately nodded and went downstairs with Edith to head to school.
