Chapter 9
Chapter 9
“Hi, I’m Edith Lovett.” After introducing herself at the front of the class, Edith calmly took the seat Dan had assigne her.
Everyone stared at her with mixed expressions. They hadn’t seen what happened firsthand, but it wasn’t hard to figure out that Hallie’s wig had probably been yanked off by Edith.
They’d all assumed this small town girl would be shy and easy to push around. Turns out, she was anything but. She’d even destroyed Hallie’s perfect image.
But Edith couldn’t care less about their stares.
This period was Engloria class. As soon as the teacher walked in, she handed out a practice test to everyone.
System: [New mission: A qualified heiress needs to earn qualified grades. Complete the Engloria test on your own. Score must be above the passing line.]
Edith stayed quiet. Clearly, the system was worried she’d just scribble random answers again.
The Engloria test was out of 100 points. To pass, Edith needed at least 60. This was going to be a tough one.
She worked through the questions with a dictionary in hand. Even with the system’s memory and comprehension boost, it was still hard. Her foundation was just too weak.

Maybe she needed a tutor–someone who could help her catch up on everything from the past three years. But tutors were expensive, and right now she didn’t have a single cent to her name.
And she wasn’t the type to ask others for money. She’d figure out a way to earn it herself. That way, she wouldn’t have to rely
on anyone.
System: [Engloria test completed. Grading in progress. Grading complete. Score: 45. Mission fail-]
“Want a sec!” Edith cut the system off. “I think I can still fix this.”

and redid the test. She changed about two–thirds of her answers and waited again.

Come on, system, just let me try one more time,” Edith pleaded sweetly and got one more shot.
Twenty minutes later, System: (Grading complete. Score: 62. Mission complete. Reward unlocked: 300 dollars. A qualitied heiress always has her own little stash. Knowledge is wealth.
Edith’s eyes lit up. It seemed that study–related missions came with cash rewards. She could definitely do more of these. Earning money while studying–two birds, one stone.
Just then, she heard a hesitant voice. “Hey
Edith turned to the girl sitting next to her. She had a ponytail and glasses. Edith vaguely remembered this girl introducing herself as Cathy Zegers when she sat down earlier.
“Edith, I saw you were really focused on the Engloria test, so I didn’t want to interrupt,” Cathy said awkwardly. “But you

changed your answers a few times and still didn’t get them right. This one should’ve been C. And that one–A
Edith looked at her with an eager, open expression. “Why?”
“This question is about the present perfect continuous,” Cathy explained. “The verb tenses here don’t match…”
Cathy explained everything in detail, and Edith listened carefully. Before they knew it, they’d gone through the whole test- and the bell rang.
“You’re such a dumbass. How’d you even get into Class One? Must’ve pulled strings,” said Noreen with a sneer. “I can’t believe you and Hallie are sisters. Hallie’s born talented. You’re just trash.”
Edith calmly gathered her test and shot her a cold look.
She knew Noreen from her previous life. The girl had always clung to Hallie like a shadow–Hallie’s most loyal minion. Back when Edith was stuck in the hospital for ten years, Noreen used to stop by just to mock her.
“Do you guys know why Hallie doesn’t have any hair?” Noreen suddenly stood up and raised her voice. “She just told me, crying, that she was diagnosed with leukemia. The doctor said she couldn’t keep her hair, so she shaved it all off.
“Hallie’s seriously ill and suffering, but Edith–her own sister–ripped off her wig in public just to humiliate her. How cruel is
that?”
The classroom exploded.
“Hallie has leukemia?”
“No way. She looked totally fine.”
“Poor Hallie. She’s always so sweet… she doesn’t deserve this.”
Edith almost laughed. She thought, ‘To win our classmates‘ sympathy–and save face–Hallie actually made up a lie about hasing leukemia? Only she could come up with something that ridiculous!‘
are you laughing at?” Noreen snapped. “Do you have any idea how sad Hallie is right now? And you, her own sister, all laugh?”
Edith clenched her fists and walked straight toward her. Something about her made Noreen instinctively take a step back.
“What are you afraid of?” Edith said coolly. “I’m just going to the bathroom.”
And with that, she walked out of the classroom.
As soon as Edith stepped out, Noreen waved her hand. A few girls who usually hung out with her quickly gathered around.
“We all know how good Hallie’s been to us, right?” Noreen said in a low voice. “We can’t let her take this lying down.”

Edith was walking ahead, but she could sense the footsteps behind her–more than just a few. She smirked.
She strolled into the restroom like she had all the time in the world, used a stall, then came out to wash her hands. Just like

she expected, Noreen and her crew were standing by the sinks, clearly waiting Everyone else had been cleared out.
“Hey there, tough girl, Noreen said, folding her arms with a cold grin. “First day of school and you’re already picking on my best friend? You must be getting bold. Time for a little lesson.”
She raised her hand to slap Edith.
Noreen was from the Reed family–not as powerful as the Lovetts, but still one of the top ten families in Sunspire. She never had to think twice before going after someone.
But just as her hand reached the air, Edith caught it.
The next second, Edith slammed Noreen’s head straight into the sink.
The basin was full–Edith had made sure of that. Smiling slightly, she grabbed Noreen by the hair, yanked her head back up. and said coolly, “Learned your lesson yet?”
