Chapter 97
“I want to see Edith.” Marcus hugged his knees, quietly sobbing.
Kane closed the door and fished a clear candy jar out from the pocket of his jacket. He picked out a pink candy and approached Marcus, moving closer one step at a time.
“You’re a bad guy. Let me go right now,” Marcus yelled, his voice trembling.

He lunged forward and tried to bite the chain, but there was no way his teeth could make a dent in it. Utterly frustrated, Marcus started sobbing harder, then in a burst of anger, he bit down on his own arm.
Kane was startled, his eyes wide in shock. It had been ages since Marcus had done anything to hurt himself. He dashed
over and grabbed Marcus by the jaw, trying to pry his teeth away from his arm.

“I’ll bite you to death, you bad guy,” Marcus yelled, his voice trembling with rage. He lunged and bit down hard on Kane’s
hand.
Kane breathed a sigh of relief. Better to get bitten himself than let Marcus hurt himself again. Just as Marcus opened his mouth to bite, Kane seized the moment and tossed the pink candy right in.
“What did you just make me eat?” Marcus shouted. He immediately clawed at his own throat, desperately trying to get the
candy out. But it melted away, already slipping down his throat.
“I’m going to die. You poisoned me.” Marcus sobbed loudly, his voice full of terror. “Edith, please come find me. I miss you
so much.”
Marcus’s cries tore at Kane’s heart. Part of him just wanted to hand Marcus over to the Lovett residence and be done with
But then he remembered how furious Marcus would be if he woke up and found out, and he quickly shoved that thought
aside. He sat there in silence, just waiting.
One minute went by. Two more minutes. Then more than ten minutes…
‘Why is Mr. Larson still acting like his other personality? Shouldn’t he have come back to himself by now?‘ Kane thought, anxiety prickling at him. ‘Maybe this candy isn’t doing what we thought it would.”
Kane moved over to the desk, opened up the drawer, and spotted a box that still had a couple of candies left, the ones
he’d gotten from Edith.
He grabbed one and headed over to Marcus. Marcus’s eyes instantly went wide the moment he spotted that candy.
He remembered all too clearly. There was this one time when Edith fed him that exact candy, and everything went black for him. ‘No way. I am not eating that, Marcus thought.
“Stop. Please,” Marcus yelled, a quiver of pure panic in his voice. He shrank desperately into the corner, clamping both hands over his mouth, determined to give Kane absolutely no chance to force that candy on him.
Kane stalked toward him, each step inching closer.

Chapter 97
“Don’t come any closer,” Marcus cried out. He whipped around and bolted for the window, but the window had long since been welded shut. There was no way he could break out.
He shook his head furiously, choking with sobs. “No, please, don’t do this to me. I have to go find Edith.”
Kane’s heart twisted with sympathy, but he still spoke gently. “Ms. Lovett just wants you to have a normal life, you know.”
Marcus just stared blankly, letting the tears roll down his cheeks. Suddenly, it all came back. Last time he’d slipped into the darkness, it was Edith who pinned him down, orderlies sticking a needle in his arm.
‘Edith doesn’t like me. She doesn’t want me to appear ever again,‘ Marcus thought, misery flooding his heart. He sank down, curling up tight around himself, trying desperately not to fall apart.
Kane acted instantly. He moved in, held Marcus firmly by the shoulders, and shoved the candy into his mouth.
Several seconds past, Marcus collapsed into Kane’s arms and drifted off to sleep. About ten minutes later, Marcus woke up. His eyes were clear and deep, and that familiar, commanding aura returned to him.
Kane quickly let go of him and respectfully unlocked the chains. “Mr. Larson, how are you feeling?”
Marcus felt pain in his wrists and ankles, which were scraped and swollen. His arms had bite marks. He looked at Kane, whose hand was also bitten and bleeding.
Marcus was silent for a whole five minutes before he finally said, “Well, guess that candy really does the trick.”
Kane shook his head. “The candy Dr. Barrett came up with did nothing. The one that worked was the one from Ms. Lovett. The ingredients are supposed to be identical, but somehow, the effects are night and day. What’s up with that?”
He hesitated for a second, then said, “Maybe we should just straight up ask Ms. Lovett where she got that candy.”
No matter how hard they tried to investigate, they kept hitting dead ends. Even copying the recipe was a total flop. In the end, the only thing left was to go track down Edith herself and ask.
Marcus shook his head. Edith already knew his biggest secret. If she found out the candy could actually cure him, she’d have every one of his weaknesses in the palm of her hand. The idea left him feeling exposed and uneasy.
He said quietly, “Let’s just wait and see.”
He buried his entire face in his hands. In that moment of life and death, he slowly began to regain his former self.
He plunged his entire face beneath the surface. For a split second–hovering right there at the edge between life and death -he finally started to reclaim his real self, piece by piece.
[Mission failed.) A voice echoed in Edith’s mind, instantly snapping her out of her focus on studying.
This mission had landed out of nowhere, and now it was gone just as weirdly. She hadn’t even caught sight of a single kid from start to finish.
Edith shook her head and got back to working on her practice exams.
Just like that, the weekend slipped away. On Monday morning, Dan announced the results of last week’s placement test.

Hallie hadn’t even taken the test, so Cathy claimed the top spot. James was right behind in second, and Edith ended up way down in eighteenth place.
“Edith has improved remarkably,” said Dan. “She was at the bottom when she joined our class, but in just over half a month, she surpassed more than twenty classmates. Everyone should learn from her.”
The class started buzzing with whispers.
“She used to be at the bottom of the class. How did Edith suddenly land in eighteenth place? You think she cheated or what?” One whispered.

“Come on, it was just an in–class test. Who even bothers to cheat on something like that? It’s not even the monthly exam or the SAT.” Another chimed in.
“Hey, wasn’t there someone who swore they’d live stream themselves eating a hundred packs of chips if Edith broke the top twenty? Time to pay up and start the stream,” a third voice added.
“A hundred chips? That’s nothing. You all better get ready after school. I’m doing it.”
Dan rapped on the lectern. “This Friday’s exam is with eight schools. Three teachers who worked on the SAT are involved. Do well here, and you’ll be ready for the SAT.”
Each monthly exam was a comprehensive ranking of all the key high schools in the province, and it somewhat reflected the situation of the SAT. The students in the class were all taking it very seriously.
After class, Edith was called into the teacher’s office. “Your progress has been remarkable, especially in math. Just two weeks ago, you were struggling to even pass, but now you’ve scored over 120 points.
“With the SAT only four days away, there’s still room for you to push that math score even higher. Let’s see how much further you can go.”
The teachers from Class One all crowded around with long faces, clearly at their wits‘ end. Edith wasn’t the best in the class, but her progress was by far the most jaw–dropping.
Edith wasn’t the top student, but her core subjects had improved remarkably. However, her electives were barely passing. Elective teachers wondered if she had issues with them.
The three teachers decided to warm Edith up with some practice worksheets, each handing her a stack.
“You only scored 70 in science, Edith,” the science teacher said. “Try working through these practice papers. They should help you brush up and hopefully bump your score.”
“My subject may not be the biggest chunk on the test, but you shouldn’t let it slide, either. There are still four days before the monthly exam. I think you can easily pick up another ten points.” The other teacher chimed in
“My subject honestly not that tough. It’s really about getting the concepts down and memorizing the formulas. I’ve put together a study plan for you. Trust me, four days is enough to gain maybe another twenty points,” another teacher said.
Edith had boosted her math score in just two weeks, nearly aced Engloria, and progressed in literature. So a ten or twenty- point increase in elective subjects really didn’t seem out of reach.
