After days of intense review, all the senior students took this monthly exam very seriously because it could help predict
their SAT scores.
Thursday night, the teachers kept everyone late again, drilling the main question types nonstop until it was past ten before class finally ended,
With the exam coming up tomorrow, Edith figured she’d skip the endless practice papers and hit the sack early to recharge
for the big day.
After saying goodbye to Cathy and James, Edith slung her backpack and headed out. The Lovett family’s driver always waited by the side gate, so she cut across the playground and slipped out that way.
Most nights, this spot would be buzzing with students and parents after evening classes. But tonight, thanks to Class One’s teacher running extra late, the place was nearly empty. Everyone had already drifted off.
Edith reviewed formulas under her breath as she walked toward the road across from the school. She’d barely taken a few steps when the System’s mechanical voice echoed in her mind.
[New mission issued.]
[A true lady always lent a hand. Went help the girl who was in trouble.]
She looked up and spotted some shadows moving deep in a distant alleyway.
As she stepped closer, she heard a girl shouting angrily from inside. “Stay back. I swear I’ll call the police if you come any
closer.”
A guy snarled back, voice rough and nasty. “Bitch, you think you can scam me and just walk away? You think I’m one of
those softies from school?”
The girl fired back. “I was your girlfriend just recently, so what if I spent your money? I don’t want to be with you anymore, so stop bugging me. Seriously, aren’t you embarrassed?”
Edith shook her head. ‘Seriously? All by herself, surrounded by these punks, and she’s actually mouthing off at them? Is she trying to get herself killed?‘ Edith couldn’t help but think.
She took a determined step toward the alley, ready to intervene. But suddenly, someone grabbed her arm. She turned
around and there stood Kelvin.
“This is dangerous.” Kelvin murmured. “Why would you go in there alone? Let’s just call the cops.”
Edith yanked her wrist free, her voice chilly. “Police won’t show up for at least ten minutes. Are we just going to stand around and let that girl get hurt?”
‘If I don’t step in, there’s no way I’m finishing the System’s mission. I’d be stupid not to cash in,‘ Edith reminded herself.
Edith marched straight into the alley, ignoring everything else. Kelvin looked anxious and hung back for a split second, but couldn’t help trailing after her.

Chapter 98
“Hey Cody, check it out. Total babe incoming.” One of the punks hollered. Five thugs immediately spun around, every
stare locked onto Edith.

Even in the crappy alley lighting, Edith almost seemed to shine. Her beauty was so unreal it felt like she’d stepped right out of a dream.
“Edith. Help me,” cried the girl in the middle of the thugs, her voice trembling with panic.
Edith squinted through the dim light, trying to place the girl. She stared a few times but just couldn’t figure out who she
was.
“It’s me, Mia Scott.” Mia stomped her foot, frustrated. “You haven’t even been in Sunspire that long, and already you forgot your best friend? Seriously, Edith, that’s so not cool.”
Finally, it clicked. Mia, the so–called “best friend” from her old village days.
Even though Edith had only been in Sunspire for a few weeks, the days she’d spent in the countryside felt like another life. There was no way she’d remember someone as forgettable as Mia.
“So she’s your friend? Now that’s interesting.” Cody, the thug leader, was in his thirties and looked quite respectable, but he had a nonchalant demeanor, smoking a cigarette and giving off an air of being tough to mess with.
“Either you pay off Mia’s debt, or you step up and take her beating instead,” Cody sneered, voice cold and mocking.
Mia practically dove behind Edith, clutching her like a lifeline. “Edith, didn’t you brag your dad’s loaded and run his own business? Just help me pay it off, please. It’s only 6 hundred dollars.”
Mia’s desperate act brought back a flood of memories, none of them good.
Back when Edith was in school out in the sticks, Selena looked after her on paper, but every cent the Lovett family sent
was funneled to Selena’s own grandson. Edith was left practically penniless all year, never seeing any of the money meant
for her.
She wore the cheapest clothes and used the most basic items for daily life. Due to her extreme insecurity, she never dared to look up when talking to others at school, and consequently, she had no friends.
Except for Mia. Mia was the only one who ever bothered to talk to her, so Edith had clung to her like a lifeline, thinking she
was her best friend.
Her so–called friends often exploited her. When Vincent brought her books or money from the countryside, Mia would take everything, claiming it was for friendship.
Mia used to yell at her, boss her around, dump homework and errands on her left and right. And Edith, just to keep this so- called friend, had let herself be treated like dirt.
“Hey, Edith, you don’t want to admit we’re friends now?” Mia snapped, sounding downright offended. “Just cough up the money already, will you? I need to get back to my aunt’s place soon.”
Mia came to Sunspire for the party and ran into her ex, Cody, a street punk. She left him after finding out he was broken. Now, she was cornered for money, which was just bad luck.

Chapter 98
Kelvin took a step forward and said smoothly, “I’ll pay the 6 hundred dollars.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet, but Edith stopped him, pushing his hand back. ‘If Kelvin takes care of this, there goes my chance at a reward,‘ she thought.
Edith arched a brow at the thugs. “What if I don’t pick either option?”
“Then you’ve got a death wish,” Cody snarled, suddenly reaching for her shoulder.
He’d just gotten burnt by Mia, and right now, he wasn’t interested in pretty faces. No matter how stunning Edith looked, she was nothing to him.
Cody barely got his hand up before Edith snatched his wrist in a flash.
She used to just shove people off her, but now, thanks to the System’s martial arts skills, she drew power straight from her core, spun aside, and effortlessly tossed Cody aside like he weighed nothing.
“Cody.” Someone blurted out.
“You alright, Cody?” Another chimed in. The punks all scrambled over in a panic.
Cody spat to the side, scowling. “Damn, you’ve got some skills, bitch. Alright, boys, let’s jump her together.” Five thugs rushed her all at once.
Kelvin went sheet–white, dashing in as if to shield Edith, but she shot him a frosty glare. “Don’t get in my way.”
Edith eased her left foot back and raised her right hand, focusing hard on how to channel the energy inside her.
That energy wasn’t wild and out of control. It built up steadily in her palm, almost guiding her, urging her to strike back.
Before the thugs even knew what hit them, they were dropping left and right, wiped out by Edith’s moves.
[Mission complete. Reward–Basic martial arts skills for Host.]
Edith could immediately feel the strength in her wrists ramp up. ‘This mission totally paid off,‘ she thought.
Kelvin stood rooted to the spot, utterly stunned at what he was seeing.
He only saw Edith shift her weight, tap her foot, her hand blur through the air, and then her right leg flashed forward. Before he could even process it, the thugs were sprawled out on the ground, screaming.
The dim yellow glow washed over Edith, wrapping her in a gold halo, She looked almost magical, so surreal it was hard to believe she was really standing there.
Mia had already fled to the mouth of the alley to hide. By the time she dared sneak back in, those thugs had scattered like scared rats.
