Chapter 99
Under the warm, dim lights. Edith bent down to pick up her fallen backpack.

Kelvin was watching her. Meanwhile, Mia had her eyes fixed on Kelvin. ‘He is ridiculously handsome, and he definitely looks rich. He just offered to fork over 6 hundred dollars for me. Could he actually be into me?‘ Mia’s heart was fluttering.
Her pulse racing, she hurried over. “Thank you for helping me out just now.” She was convinced that Kelvin was the one who had scared off those thugs.
After knowing Edith for so many years, Mia never thought Edith would have what it takes to stand up to that kind of
trouble.
But Kelvin didn’t even glance her way. He walked straight over to Edith. “Are you okay? Do you need to go to the hospital?”
Edith replied nonchalantly, “I’m fine.”
She slung her backpack over her shoulder and started walking out of the alley. Mia quickly caught up. “Edith, wait. We
haven’t seen each other in forever, and you’re just gonna walk off like that?”
Edith smirked. “You wanna catch up?”
Mia saw Edith’s shoes, costing over 6 hundred dollars a pair. Remembering Edith mentioned her family was rich, Mia
realized it was true and wanted Edith to give her the shoes.
But as Kelvin approached, Mia shifted gears. “After you switched schools, all of us missed you a lot, especially Yosef Yoder.
He’s always asking me about you.
“And I told him you used to have a crush on him. Now he really wants to meet and talk to you in person. Where do you live now? Just give me your address, and next time I’ll bring Yosef by to visit you.”
Edith was puzzled. ‘Yosef?‘ she wondered. She wracked her brain, and after a moment it clicked. He was the student council president back in high school.
‘Did I have a crush on Yosef? Wait, I really can’t remember,‘ she thought. Anyway, she didn’t even know what Yosef looked
like now.
Her voice was cold. “I don’t have any friends out here in the countryside, so don’t let random people try to get close to
me.”
Mia stared at Edith in total shock. ‘Seriously? She really just said we’re not friends?‘ Mia fumed.
Mia shot back, “Oh, so switching to a school in the city means you’re too high and mighty for us broke nobodies now,
huh?”
“Yeah, I am. I’m too good for you guys now,” Edith said with a smirk. As for those so–called friends from her past, she hoped she’d never cross paths with them again.
That insecure, forgotten version of herself. She never wanted to see that girl again.

Chapter 99
“Hey, did you see what Edith just did?” Mia started whining to Kelvin, hoping he’d take her side, but he just walked off without giving her so much as a glance.

Fuming, Mia stomped her foot and chased after Edith. She watched as Edith got into a car, which sped off down the street. Her eyes turned red with jealousy.
Back before Edith switched schools, everyone in their class said she was an orphan with no parents, and nobody ever missed a chance to bully her.
She thought Edith was an orphan. But then Edith transferred to Sunspire, wearing 6–hundred–dollar shoes and riding in a private car. This made her feel really jealous.
Friday was Sunspire High School’s monthly exam. The freshmen and sophomores were given a day off early for the weekend, while the entire school was set up to mimic the SAT testing environment, creating a solemn atmosphere.
The four subjects were split across two days. By the time all the exams were over, it was already past six in the evening. There was no evening study, and everyone got the next day off.
After finishing the exams, Cathy was bursting with excitement. “Edith, there was a math problem I totally recognized. It
was one of the main types from Larry’s notes.”
James nodded eagerly. “Larry’s notes really saved the day for me. I bet I’ll get over 130 in math this time.”
Edith grinned. “Yeah, same here.”
Ever since her previous life, Edith had spent pretty much all her time grinding away at math, and it was without a doubt where she’d seen the biggest improvement.
Any spare moments she had went into Engloria, so she figured she should easily hit 140 on that one, too. As for science, honestly, she didn’t stress about it. Whatever score she got, she’d just let fate decide.
After grabbing dinner in the school cafeteria, Edith decided to swing by the bookstore.
She planned to spend most of her time tackling science next, so she needed to pick up a bunch of review books and test papers to prep for the upcoming exams.
Just as she stepped out of Class One, she spotted someone standing at the door.
She suddenly felt that Kelvin was a bit persistent, always hanging around and getting in the way, like yesterday. Now, he had that look of wanting to say something but hesitating. She didn’t feel like dealing with him and just walked away.
“Edith, wait a moment.” Kelvin called after her, hurrying to catch up. “After you left last night, I noticed there was a book on the ground. Is it yours?”
Edith barely glanced at it. “Not mine.”
“Then it must be your friend, Mia’s. Do you know where she lives? We could go return it together,” Kelvin offered, going out of his way to seem helpful.
He might look super easygoing and nice to everyone, but Kelvin knew better than anyone, he’d never actually gone out of his way to help anybody.

Chapter 99
A girl he didn’t know dropped her books, which had nothing to do with him. But to get some alone time with Edith, he used this as an excuse. He also didn’t understand why he cared so much about Edith.

Edith was at a complete loss for words. She hadn’t even had the chance to tell Kelvin off before that damn System decided
to mess with her again.
She didn’t want to be mean, but the system made her act manipulative. With Kelvin, she had no problem playing these
games.
She smiled and said, “Sorry, I don’t know where she lives. She rarely studies, so she probably doesn’t need this book. You
can keep it or throw it away.”
[Mission complete. Reward–taste buds of a top gourmet.]
Edith’s senses were enhanced. Her hearing and vision were fine, but her heightened smell and taste made her detect unwanted odors and flavors. She wondered how she could eat the school cafeteria food now.
She quickly sped off before Kelvin could even react, not wanting to stick around in case the System hit her with another
one of its random, ridiculous quests.
When she got to the bookstore, she hadn’t even stepped inside before she caught sight of a familiar face.
“Edith.” Mia was waiting right outside the school gate. As soon as she saw Edith, she rushed over. “Hey, what was up with you last night? Are you seriously trying to ditch me as a friend?”
Edith gave her a half–smirk. “You seriously want to be my friend?”
“Of course, my friends here all want to be friends with you,” Mia said, waving her hand. A few other girls gathered around,
and she smiled.
“We’re all friends, so don’t be so unfeeling. Now that you’re back in Sunspire and can afford such expensive shoes, you must have some extra cash. Why don’t you share a bit with us?”
As she spoke, Mia reached out to grab Edith’s backpack. She was used to doing such things and knew that Edith wouldn’t dare to resist, which made her bold and unscrupulous.
Edith didn’t resist. She let go of her bag and smiled, “There are people everywhere. It wouldn’t look good if someone saw us. Let’s go to yesterday’s alley to talk.”
“That’s more like it,” Mia sneered, clearly satisfied with Edith’s obedience. She strutted off toward the alley with her crew, looking way too pleased with herself.
Edith tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, the chill creeping into her smile hinting at something much colder brewing
beneath.
