Chapter 208 Learning Curve

When Becky returned with a large bag of supplies, she found Xavier looking thoroughly exasperated while Mr. John chattered beside him non–stop.
She paused, then went to wash and sanitize her hands before gently taking James from Xavier. Her movements were swift and practiced as she changed his diaper.
James, who had been stuck with a mess on his bottom for way too long, finally felt relieved and gave a happy little bounce.
Becky kissed his chubby cheek, her eyes curved in a warm smile. “My precious baby smells so good!”
Xavier: “…”
Becky played with James for a bit, then glanced at the time and passed him back to Xavier. “Take him home and give him milk. He’s getting hungry.”
Xavier didn’t want to leave yet he hadn’t even had a proper conversation with Becky.
“Can I wait a little longer?”
“No. I’m warning you–if he gets hungry and starts wailing, you’re handling it.”
James got vicious when he was hungry.
Xavier reluctantly carried James toward the door.
Sure enough, they hadn’t even reached home when James started getting fussy, his tiny fists clenched as he began howling.
The sound made Xavier’s temples throb. “James, shut up!”
“Waaah…”
“I said shut up. Did you hear me?”
Randall: “…”
Xavier was starting to really resent this little son of his. All he wanted was to spend a few more minutes with Becky, but no- this kid had to ruin it.
“You keep crying and I’ll spank you!”
Randall sat in the front seat sweating as father and son nearly went to war in the back.
“Sir, we’re home.”
Xavier was more than ready to be done with this. He hauled James out of the car.
The housekeeper was surprised to see them return together.
Xavier gave instructions. “He’s hungry. Make him some formula.“,
“…Yes, sir.”
She quickly prepared a bottle and brought it over. James snatched it with both hands and began chugging it down like he hadn’t eaten in days.
Once full, he went limp in Xavier’s arms, dozing off.
Xavier stared down at the little boy, Asleep, James was peaceful… even cute.
He couldn’t believe it–he actually thought James was cute.
When the kid was awake, he was a nightmare.
Still, Xavier held him gently for once and, after heading upstairs, carefully laid him in the crib.

That afternoon, Xavier was working on his laptop downstairs when James started wailing upstairs again.
The sound immediately made his head throb.
One of the housekeepers poked her head out from the kitchen. “Mr. Xavier, I’ll go get James.”

Normally, Abigail took care of James, while she and the other help handled the meals and cleaning. Abigail hadn’t trusted anyone else with the baby.
But now that Abigail was out, someone had to step up.
Xavier nodded.
The housekeeper went upstairs and brought James down.
The moment he hit the floor, James started crawling–straight toward Xavier and his laptop.
Xavier had no choice but to put his work away and stare down at the little invader.
James giggled and grabbed his hand, trying to shove it into his mouth.
Xavier yanked it back. “James, my hand isn’t food. Stop putting everything in your mouth. It’s not hygienic.”
James let out a peal of laughter.
What did Daddy say? I don’t understand! Don’t understand!
Xavier clicked his tongue and scooped him up. He checked his diaper.
Full again.
He carried James upstairs to the nursery, set him on the changing table, and tried to recall how Becky had done it.
First: remove the dirty diaper.
Then: pull out a clean one from under the table,
He stared at the new diaper for a long moment.
It was a pull–up style.
Which side was the front?
James squirmed on the table, kicking his legs.
Daddy’s so slow! Can’t you hurry up?!

After much trial and error, Xavier finally figured it out and got the diaper on correctly, followed by James’s pants. He picked him up and checked the time.
Almost time for Becky to get off work.
He headed out with James in his arms.
“Let’s go pick up your mom. Be good, okay?”
“Ba ba ba…”
Becky stepped out of the clinic and saw Xavier getting out of the car with James in his arms, smiling at her from afar.
She froze.
Her nose tingled, and for a split second, she wanted to cry,
What was going on?

Why did she feel like crying?
Xavier walked up, immediately sensing the shift in her emotions.
His sharp eyes narrowed slightly. “What’s wrong?”
Becky shook her head, brushing away the feeling and replacing it with a gentle smile.
That smile made Xavier blink.
“You two came to pick me up?”
“We came to pick you up from work.”
Picked me up from work…
Becky felt a warmth bloom in her chest.
She held out her hands. “Let me take him.”
“I’ve got him. Get in the car.”
Becky didn’t argue. She opened the door and got in, Xavier following behind her.
James reached out toward Becky, eager to get into her arms.
She smiled and welcomed him onto her lap, playing with him as they drove off.
