Chapter 209 Ultimatums
Xavier tilted his head and leaned against Becky’s shoulder, watching James with a soft gaze.
“Becky, why do you think he laughs so much?”
Becky stiffened slightly. Having him lean on her shoulder made her uneasy.
Xavier didn’t get a response right away, so he turned his head to look at her.
Becky just happened to glance at him too.
Their eyes met. Becky quickly looked away.
“What’s wrong with laughing? He’s a little ray of sunshine. He’ll grow up cheerful and sociable. Girls will love him.”
Xavier replied, “I smile a lot too. Do you like me?”

Becky turned in surprise, only to see Xavier’s fox–like eyes crinkled, lips curled into a flirtatious grin that was dangerously charming.
Her heart skipped a beat.
“…No.”
“Why not?”
Xavier looked wounded. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t get Becky to admit even a sliver of affection. Her lips were sealed tight.
“Because you’re not cute.”
Xavier: “…”
Becky peeked at him again. He looked downright grumpy, even shooting James the occasional glare.
She couldn’t hold back a laugh.
She hadn’t expected to see Lilian waiting at the villa when they returned.
The older woman was standing at the gate, peering toward the house.
Becky glanced at Xavier. He had already opened the door and stepped out.
She followed with James in her arms.
Lilian’s brow furrowed as she took in the scene.
Xavier walked up and stopped in front of her. “Mom, what are you doing here?”
“I came to see you. So you live here now?”
“Mm.”
Becky gave Lilian a polite nod, then carried James inside.
Lilian had never liked her. There was nothing to talk about.
Xavier’s eyes followed Becky’s retreating figure, and once she was inside, his expression dimmed.
Lilian didn’t miss it.
“What exactly is going on between you two?”
Xavier looked at his mother’s disapproving face. “Exactly what it looks like.”

“You’re divorced, and now you’re tangled up again. What are people supposed to think?”
Xavier let out a soft laugh. “I’m the one chasing her.”
You!”
Lilian thought her son had completely lost it–enchanted, bewitched by Becky.

You two divorced for a reason. Clearly, you’re not compatible. Even if you got back together, the same problems would just come back. Trust me, move out. Becky isn’t right for you.”
The smile faded from Xavier’s face. His gaze turned cold.
“She’s perfect for me.”
“But-
“Mom, stay out of it.”
“I’m your mother. Of course I’ll get involved!”
Xavier narrowed his eyes. “Why don’t you like Becky? You watched her grow up. And James–he’s your grandson. You and Dad haven’t even asked about him once. You didn’t even look at him just now.”
Henry and Lilian had always been distant–too distant.
It pained Xavier more than he could say.
Lilian frowned and said nothing.
Yes, she’d watched Becky grow up. But she had never liked the girl. She only took her in because she’d promised Jade. Raising her had fulfilled that obligation.
But there weren’t many mothers–in–law who liked women who “took” their sons away.
She was no exception.
Her ideal daughter–in–law was educated, gentle, obedient–someone who respected her and followed her lead.
Becky wasn’t like that.
And that child? Becky’s child. She felt no bond. No affection.
Xavier wasn’t waiting for her to explain.
“Whether you like her or not doesn’t matter. I like her. And I love my son enough for both of us. My life is my own. Go home.’
With that, Xavier turned and walked into the villa.
Lilian stood at the door, seething. But she couldn’t scream like a shrew.
Inside, Becky gave Xavier a few lingering looks.
He poured a glass of water and brought it over. “Drink. Your lips are dry.”
Becky took it. “Thanks.”
She’d been busy all day, hadn’t even had time to drink water. Her lips were indeed chapped.
After she drank, Xavier took the glass and put it away naturally.
Becky watched him again.
He turned toward her. “If you’ve got something to say, say it.”
Becky pressed her lips together, then finally spoke. “Xavier, you’ll always be James’s father. We’ve been getting along fine lately. But I’m leaving for Circovia soon. Let’s end things here.”

There was no future between them.
They’d slept together, sure. But that was it. Time to part ways cleanly.
Xavier stared at her with unreadable eyes, the intensity making her scalp prickle.
After a long silence, he finally asked, “Why?”
Becky kept her head down. “We were just… sleeping together. Once I’m in Circovia, how would that even work? So let’s just end it here.”
“Who said it has to end just because you’re in Circovia? I can fly over.”
“…That’s not practical.”
“Sure it is. I don’t mind.”
“You’re a CEO. You don’t have that kind of time.”
“I can make time. For you, I’ll find a way.”
