Natalie studied him for a moment, guessing this man had to be Ruben, Marcusclosest friend. After all, the only person who could sit at the main table with Marcus was likely him.

As the evening went on, guests came forward one after another with gifts; once the formalities were over, the banquet officially began. Natalie wasn’t good with alcohol; plus, she needed to keep an eye on Gabriel, so she stuck to juice the entire night.

By the time the dinner was nearing its end, a guest approached to toast the couple.

Natalie’s glass was empty. Jackson, without a second thought, turned and grabbed a glass of orange juice from a passing server, handing it to her.

She didn’t think twice; she reached out, took the glass, and drank it down in one smooth motion.

Moments later, after the guest offering the toast left, Ruben suddenly rose to his feet, unsteady and swaying. Marcus, I think I’ve had too much. I’m going to your room to lie down.”

Marcus gave a slight nod. Go slow.

Ruben waved him off and hurried toward the living room.

At the same time, Natalie felt something off.

A sudden heat swept through her veins, sharp and consuming; it spread fast, growing stronger by the second. Hold on, that glass of juicesomething’s wrong with it.

It had been five years since the last time she’d been drugged, but the memory of that nightof feeling like death would have been kinderstill haunted her.

If it hadn’t been for Jackson back then, she might not have survived at all

Her vision blurred; her mind fogged, thoughts slipping away.

She accidentally knocked over the glass beside her, the sharp noise drawing Jackson’s attention.
